I'm not really following you with respect to "height" (or "too tall"), which is an odd dimension to use in this case. The VIM tool has a sleeker profile in the sense that the male and female universal joints permanently pinned to the extension are the same diameter as the extension. Yes, building the equivalent tool with detachable parts, the universal joint attached to the male side of the extension is going to be wider than the extension. That could, I suppose, create obstruction issues, in some unforseen use cases. I can't imagine what they might be, but yes, as I said above, it's bulkier than the VIM tool on that end.

As for slop, most of my drive tools have secure connections, with friction balls, for a very tight fit. I might even trust it more than those pins.

But to each his own. If you're happy with what you have, that's all that matters. I'm not trying dissuade you. By the same token, I remain unpersuaded.
As for height, I’ll let the pic do the talking.

As I push and pull, the one that is an extension with a user installed uni joint has a lot of wobble to it. The other is solid.

Another thought, when using an extension and a uni joint you are typically working in a difficult area. The uni joint could fall off of the extension. Unless you are using a locking extension, which means even more bulk, not ideal in a difficult area. The all in one unit, no bulk, no separation off the uni joint and extension.

Then there is the possibility of the socket falling off, but that could happen either way.

Still not following you on the use of the word "height." If you mean that the bell of the detachable uni joint on the right is a tad longer than the same part of the uni joint that is pinned on the tool to its left, that wouldn't cause me any concern whatsoever. In fact, if the two tools have the same length extension and were lined up even at the shoulders there instead of by the drive studs, I would consider it providing a little more length to be a good thing.

I already told you I have no worries about connections. All my drive tools are very high quality with super tight fits and detent balls.

But again, to each his own. You obviously like the idea of these fixed double swivel concoctions and that's good for you.
