The vast majority of the wire in your house is 14/2 rated at 15A. To go to 20A you need 12/2 which is a lot more expensive and no one installs this just in case. You cannot simply upgrade 14/2 wire to 20A, any electrician doing this should have his license revoked. As someone mentioned, you wouldn't want your insurance to be denied in case of a fire. Here is my big problem with this, that Dewalt blew a 15A that means it is running border line 15A or more. If you had a 14/2 with a 20A breaker and your load was just a few amps it would still not be legal but you would never see issues, this set up will be pushing the wire rating regularly. Dubber, for your own safety and that of your family, please return the breakers to 15A and run a separate 20A, 12/2 circuit to your compressor. BTW, you also need a special plug rated at 20A, those regular $.99 plugs are rated to 15A.

I doubt the compressor was the only thing on the circuit, so that's more than likely the reason it popped a 15A breaker. I agree with you though and even mentioned to him to run a separate circuit, especially if the panel is in the garage and overhead access is available it's stupid easy to get done.

Another busy weekend on the old homestead, which started off with deciding to clean-up the garage and get rid of the salt and nastiness that had built up.

Scored this from my Father-in-law for my Bday, super pumped about this score. I had been planning on just getting an Impact Wrench but now i have lots to explore and use in the future.

Also had a chance to mount up the cord reel, I'm really liking this spot which allows full motion left to right. And with 50 feet it will be more then enough to cover the garage and driveway.

If i wasn't busy enough wifey decided we should finally take the plunge and start some painting inside. Funny enough thus far i've only painted in the garage of our new place. Loving the results after the first coat i snapped a quick pic. Were starting with our living room, painting a light grey with a dark grey accent wall on the end. I'll get a better pic up after everything is put back in place. Its nice to start personalizing our home and really making it our own.

I also had the intention of getting the My Q installed but i've got a home wifi problem right now i'm still trying to fix, very annoying! Hoping this week it will finally get sorted out. I'm out of troubleshooting fixes that i can do on my own so i'm pretty much at a stand still until we can get a technician to take a look.

Yeah, that is my big concern, is leaving my garage door open, or accidentally hitting the button on my keychain remote. So having the camera in my garage is great for peace of mind.

It seems trivial, but it does weigh on my mind for sure. The other more plausible thing is my wife pulling out, hitting the button to close and driving off. Meanwhile something has caused the door sensors to back it up from a leaf or some ghost flying by lol....

Dubber- my MyQ allows me to set a timer for auto down after 5 or 10 minutes if it's left open. It won't prevent issues if a ghost or leaf flies by, but it provides some solace. Especially with the phone alert, at least you'd know it was left up or had some issue.

Think this would be another great chance to look back with comparison shots. Quality isn't amazing, i apologize for that, but i think the angles work for a true representation.

Preamble:
A) From what I can find online, the Dewalt D15568 has a Motor Full Load Ampere (FLA) rating of 15A.
B) Even though you're in Canada (I'm just down the road from you in Kanata) Most of the advice I've gotten on this relates to US NEC. I haven't tracked down the relevant Canadian Electrical Code citations, but they run pretty much parallel on these things...

A dedicated motor circuit must have wiring sized to 125% of the Motor FLA.
You get away from this, somewhat, by plugging a portable compressor into a general purpose 15A outlet and hoping for the best.
That said, if you do have a dedicated circuit, the NEC (Table 430-152) actually allows a circuit breaker to be sized up to 250% of the Motor FLA.

What that means, is that, as long as the wire is sized for the load (125% of 15A = 18.75A, so 12AWG wire) you can use a breaker sized up to 250% of FLA, or 250% of 15A which equals 37.5A.
Since there is no such thing as a 37.5A breaker, you're allowed to go to the next size up, so 40A.

Now, assuming you have 12AWG in your wall, you could make this a dedicated circuit by removing all the other outlets on that circuit, wire nuts on the wires and cover plates on the boxes, then label the compressor's outlet "Air Compressor Only", and replace the duplex with a single outlet, or tape over half the duplex.

That code allows you to up the breaker size to the lowest size that doesn't nuisance trip, up to the max.

The reason for this, is that in a dedicated motor circuit, the breaker doesn't provide circuit overload protection. That is handled by the overload protection in the motor (That red "reset" button on the compressor motor). The breaker only provides short circuit protection, and a short circuit on a #12 wire could trip a 200A main before it had a chance to overheat and cause a fire.

Now, if you only have 14AWG in the walls, you don't meet the minimum 125% of FLA spec wire size for a dedicated circuit, so you're stuck with the "general use" circuit spec of 15A on 14AWG.

Thanks for the info Keating. I should clarify though, originally it was my intention to upgrade all of my wiring but after he told me what was involved i opted to put the others on hold. He only upgraded the ones he already had wired in which meant the breakers, wiring and plugs.

Good plan. Every garage needs a couple 20A circuits, but 90% of stuff is fine with 15A.

Hey Dubber, where did you get those lamps if you don't mind me asking? I've been on the market for some for the living room those would be perfect!

No problem, I'm not sure where you're located (Canada/US) but we scooped these at Home Sense. We really lucked out a couple days prior to us moving out of our old place. They have an awesome older/retro look to them.

Ah, yea good excuse for a two for one! They were super cheap as well which put them in our card right away. Great store with stock that is very random, rotates quickly and always at a great price.

BTW. I noticed the MK4 in your garage, what are the specs? Could be a 337 or just a nicely done 1.8 or maybe a VR?

Quick question, does the RD tiles stop before the garage door threshold or not in your garage? I cant easily tell from any pictures.

The other night I when posted in this thread I didn't realize you had moved into a new place, the double versus single thing didn't even register. I read through the entire thread. Congrats buddy.

Threads like this one are an inspiration for me to make as much progress as I can on mine.

I'm slowly getting over the fact you eliminated the red accent stripe, but it looks sharp man. I know how hard it is to keep it looking that clean in this winter weather, so props to you.

For sure! thanks for the info on those. Car is an 03 1.8 big turbo :) with mild shave here and there

Just finished going through this whole thread, took 6 episodes of Brooklyn 99. Going to say the same thing as everyone else, nice work and progress. Glad to see another VAG enthusiast in Ottawa as well. Your garage looks eerily the same as my brothers, is it a Monarch?
I'm going through the same milestones as you, new double car garage, just moved in last October. Not moving along nearly as fast as you are. Keep it up.

I spent a lot of time with exact measurements which meant it ended up sitting pretty much where i wanted it. The tiles end about three inches prior to the door and the threshold piece ends about 1-2 mm before the door.

Thanks Umberto! I guess this place had a similar vibe to it which made you feel like you were back in my Single. This garage has been a really fun journey. Especially with the tricks I picked up in my last space. It was funny but my last garage was a clincher for the buyer we were told. He originally wanted me to leave it as is but after some back and forth i just left the RaceDeck flooring.

Thanks Rick, I appreciate it. Red was awesome no doubt, but this seemed liked a great time to change it up, subtly of course :) I gotta say with my garage cleaning and car cleaning during the winter i realllly wish i had your mat wash wall.

Nice work! I always look forward to your updates!

Thanks Sean, always trying to add and or tweak it as much as i can. Most important part is that its a space i enjoy and has allowed me to connect and meet several people.

The whole thing? Now that is a commitment, you have proved your worth, you can stay hahaha. But seriously it has grown substantially so thanks for taking the time. You nailed it, our home is a Monarch Shaughnessy model. What car are you rocking? Maybe i've seen you around.

Congrats on your new garage, pretty incredible feeling getting your first garage, and then a double blew me away! Keep up the good work, document, start up a thread and the motivation will take care of itself.

Of course it was the clincher. Anyone that thinks you don't get that $ back when renovating a space is wrong. It was a great selling point and an added bonus in the sale. I feel the renovations and detail I've done/added to my house inside and out would sell my home fast and get me top $, with the possibility of a bidding war between buyers. :dunno:

Your two garages definitely have the same look, but I was expecting you to go with a more contemporary color scheme like the beige, brown and pale blue I used on mine, you went with the ever popular grey again. :lol_hitti

Sorry to disappoint lol... To be fair, in my last garage the walls were white with only a grey accent wall.

Your place will be a breeze to sell when you get to that point due to your extreme attention to detail.

Felt great getting the car cleaned up a bit and then moved on to putting our living room back together.

*Small disclaimer about this pic, looks like its super tight at the front of the garage but when i clean the car in the garage i pull it up quite a bit so i have lots of room all the way around it.

I'm really happy with how the room came out. We aren't yet done with the room but its now at a great stage.

And to think it looked like this when the previous owners listed it.....

White, grey, what's the difference, really. :)

I'm just busting, you have nice taste and the garage and interior of the house are looking sharp.

Glad you could look past the pink walls and purple lamps when you were considering this place.

Hahaha thanks, it definitely helped us out as most buyers were turned off. We took advantage of that during the negotiations.

You'd have thought their realtor would've made them ditch the lamps:p :shocking:

Questionable advise for sure, or the lack there of.

The non color matching purple flower wall art made me throw up a little in my mouth honestly.

It was comical.... Also had purple curtains that they made a note were not included in the sale HAHAHA!

Dubber, posted some quickies i had on my phone for ya  The room looks great! Turbo is a Garrett 3071R. If your looking to upgrade Lookup pagparts.com or call and talk to Arnold. Amazing kits for 1.8t's!

Yep, exact same house as my brothers, here is what he did:

Interesting to see two exact same spaces, with completely different approaches.

This is my baby:

Shes parked for the winter though, yes a Quattro being parked during winter I know.
And the recently acquired garage:
IMG_5220-1.jpg

Its a brand new built, so nice virgin material, but progress is slow as I have been busy setting up the inside of the house for the first 3 months. We're pretty much set up now inside. But now its -20 out every damn day, so its been hard to want to go into the garage.

You are right about the size. The wife parks in the garage and when I take her car, the place feels massive compared to my old single.

Small world! I remember finding your brother's thread after it got bumped up a couple years ago. When we finalized with this place i checked out his again after a light bulb went off that i had seen our new garage done up. Gave me a sense of the size. He in Stonebridge?

Love your B6 S4. A couple years ago i was close to trading my GLI for a Nogaro B6 S4, but in the end it had more KM's and was winter driven since day one.

Thanks. That's a hard decision, a noggy S4 is a treasure these days. Speaking of which, there is one on Kijiji right now, but its probably the one you found years ago, lots of kms, doused with salt, and no timing chain service mentioned...:eek2:. Your GLI looks clean and pretty killer with those wheels on it, I probably would have done the same thing.

Hahaha, i actually spotted that one the other day. Looks a little neglected for my taste. I'm sadly on there almost daily.

Yours looks to be in great shape, had it long?

The house is looking as good as the garage, nice work man.

Thanks man, we are loving the house and especially the garage for me hahaha.
