Yeah it is a great place you created.

btw: love your Jetta. In Europe Jettas are only sold till 1995 or so. Your car is called Bora here and they sell badly. Europeans prefer hatchbacks. Don't know why.

Thanks Taurus. From what i've read after 95 they were called Vento's for the MK3 body style and then once the MK4 body style started mid year 1999 they started calling them Bora's. Too bad they aren't as widely loved in Europe but i love me some Jettas. This one is my fifth.

They may not be popular on the mainland but on our small island they sell pretty well. I've got one sat on my drive and see plenty more when I'm out and about.

Not as popular as the Golf but I prefer the proportions of the Bora...............................but I don't like the boot release mechanism!!!

Hey dubber how is the tdi real world milage? Just got myself a new job that is a fair bit away.

Well in comparison to my last daily (2010 Golf 2.5 5cyl) it is better thus far, but not mind blowing. From what I've been reading the diesels have a "break in period" where their efficiency actually gets better with age. I think an opposite effect of a gasoline engine (from my experience). To give you rough numbers i had been doing around 550 km's approx on the Golf with daily city driving where I'm now doing 750 kms on the Jetta, both have 55 liter tanks. I'm looking forward to doing a road trip in this as that's really where the diesel's excel.

I think they both have their own merits for sure. I really love how the new trunk actually pops open.

One of the parts i miss the most of the golf is the rear hatch which was perfect to keep our pup.

Are the new Jetta's actually called Jetta's now where you are? Not sure if that is just since this new body style (MK6) or if it started with the MK5.

Thanks. While both are light years ahead of my '11 dodge journey v6 the diesel is most promising. Eyeing the golf wagon tdi.

My boot doesn't open at all. I've fixed the mechanical problems I was having but now the stupid electronic switch activation thingy is playing up!!! What was wrong with a purely mechanical boot release?!?!?!

I think they were only Boras for the MkIV and they're Jettas here too.

Thats a great choice. I had no issues with the Golf beyond wanting a change. To be honest i wanted to go for the Golf wagon but wifey was interested in a station wagon. If its in the cards try and get one with a sunroof as its a panoramic roof in the wagon. Two rows worth of a sunroof is definitely sweet.

Did some work in the garage last night; first time I've ever changed all four wheels in my tight little garage. Normally i just do it on my driveway as its much easier but since its still winter up here i wanted to keep the GLI inside.

While i was out at my local Canadian Tire the other day grabbing some winter tires (for my TDI) i found this amazing utility mat. Its only about a half cm thick but extremely durable. The best part is it was on sale for $11!! I wanted to use a little bit of a cushion between my jack and the free flow, but at the same time i couldn't have something too thick as i dont have any room to spare to get the jack under the car.

This was also the first time i used this new jack on the GLI, luckily i only needed to be on very thin pieces of wood to get it under and to the the jack pads.

The jack and pad both worked really well, very happy with the results. Although it required more time as i didn't have much room to move around it was nice to be able to do it in the comfort of my own garage :)

Here are a few cell shots during the process:

First pic is a little deceiving. Looks like there is lots of room, but this is after being jacked up about 4 inches haha.

Nice idea on that utility mat, I used to use something similar after I put vinyl tile in my parent's garage (I used a recycled rubber mat that shipping companies use to keep loads from sliding).

Also, I know full well what my car looks like this time of year, so you have my utmost respect for keeping your car that clean, it looks great! Even if you don't drive it much in the winter, good job for finding the motivation this time of year. I've changed my tires in my garage as well. It's not the best space, but it's warm and so much nicer than the alternative.

Thanks man. This car (the GLI) has actually never seen a day of winter since it left the factory (in 2004) thankfully. The damage even one season of an Ontario winter and the compounded Salt is simply devastating.

Having to change them in the garage is definitely the opposite of motivating as you mentioned. I'm in the process of selling the wheels that the car was sitting on so unfortunately i had to get my *** in gear.

As good as flooring like Race Deck looks, this is why I could never use it. Having to put down a mat every time I needed to jack up the car would get old fast. You are lucky with the 3/8" sheet to get the car high enough to get the jack under. I have to use at least a 2x6.

True, like anything else its not for everyone.

Sounds like you need to get this jack, its the lowest one i've ever seen and very long thus why i went with it.

I only have about 3" of clearance on the sides and front, if your lower then that you are very brave haha.

Found one crappy pic of my old jack and the stands (home made stairs) that i had to crawl my car up to just to get my jack under. That definitely got old fast haha. Total height was about 2" inches once the car was on the top step.

Great find on the jack Dub. I'm looking for one now. Once I redid the suspension on the Camaro my old jack wouldn't fit under the car anymore. I need one just like you found. Garage looks great by the way.

Thanks Paul. I wish i could help you with your search but mine is from a canadian chain called Canadian Tire.

It was kinda unfortunate as i really like my last Black Jack car jack, and the colour worked perfectly with my theme.

Here's the link to the actual jack. From what i've seen its sold exclusively through their stores.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/m...-lift-service-jack-0091052p.html#.Uwe8z86mYhk

BTW i got mine at 50% off!

50% OFF!!!!!!!! Wow, now THAT'S a deal!!!!!

Hahaha, yes sir! I really like dealing with that chain. They have a great online site that allows you to get notifications for sales on items you like. And there stuff often has great sales.

I was especially happy as my father in law wanted to get that for me for Christmas. As soon as i saw the sale i emailed him!

I was there last week picking up some new winter tires with a 30% discount.

Looks like wifey and i are slowly starting the process of looking for a slightly bigger place with some room for possible growth. Obviously ideally i would want a double garage but I'm not sure its in the cards for this move. Likely i will just benefit from a higher ceiling and much, much more storage room in the basement to keep everything non essential. This makes me just as happy actually. I still want to have room in the budget for a fun car and a daily along with funds to mod them :)

Its crazy the pricing of houses in the city. We are both suburban people though so these are the pricing and parameters we are dealing with at this point. Our neighbourhood unfortunately is also victim to a price surcharge it seems from what i've been seeing but we have no intention of leaving this hood.

I've been reading and pricing garage door openers and thus far i'm leaning towards the Liftmaster 8500. This looks like a quality piece that would eliminate the need of the stupid bar and chain on the ceiling. I see several guys on this forum who don't regret their decision.

Please feel free to share your experience with this piece.

I definitely know what you mean. Unfortunately the comfortable budget doesn't yet allow for my dream garage.

My parents had a 3 car at one point in Calgary and even as a teenager i thoroughly enjoyed it, even more than them i think.

Good luck on the house hunt. Can't wait to see what you do with the new garage :)

hahaha thanks. Hopefully i can make it at least as good as my current set-up. Great thing about RaceDeck flooring is that i can just pack it up and bring it to my next spot. Unless the potential new owner wants it for $$.

Its crazy the pricing of houses in the city.

Welcome to Vancouver - I just walked past a house on my way to work this mornig, a couple blocks from me. Standard 33'x122' lot with a house that I wouldn't let my dog sleep in, and they're asking........wait for it............$1.5million!! :eek7: They'll get it too, for a certain tear down/rebuild. Crazy.

My kids will never be able to afford to live here...

All the best with the house hunting - always fun to look and imagine the sort of garage space you can create.

Exactly. I plan to do the same thing the next time I move. I'm taking all of my Gladiator stuff that is not nailed down :p Of course, everything is negotiable for the right price...

Best of luck Dubber. Amazing how expensive places are up there.. Even though it's hot as all get out, the cost of housing (and the public school system) are why I moved to Chandler, AZ years back. It's still affordable to live here, that's why I DO have a 3 car garage. Looking forward to seeing your newly setup garage!

Yup vancouver house prices are so crazy it's laughable. A 1200sq ft townhouse in the west end is going for 1.5 million!! That's why I live in good ol surrey. My moms going to retire in less than 5 yrs so our deal is that I'm going to buy her house in vancouver dirt cheap and build my dream house on the land. :rocker:

But good luck on the garage search...oops I mean house search. I'm sure your next garage will be as insane as this 1.

The TDI is great, especially since its my daily. The extra 250kms/tank on city winter driving is awesome.
