Hahaha, i've had to step back the amount i take to pool. Moderation lol...

Dubber,

Finally getting a chance to read your thread. I'll honestly say I didn't catch up on your single or double but I saw this pop up in the gallery the other day and checked it out. Thanks for posting all of this, it was a great read. I really like seeing the transformation of the space.

Does having a gravel driveway cause any concern for you being a detailer? I have more recently gotten in to enjoying washing my vehicles but I have a fairly long double gravel drive with overhanging tree limbs. I find it difficult to do any serious detailing in the gravel. I don't have any covering for my vehicles so it's very discouraging to wash a vehicle in the evening and come out the next morning to it being filthy. The trees keep dropping, what I assume are, small droplets of sap all over my vehicles. I've almost given up trying to keep them clean.

Congratulations on the new driveway, by the way.

Thanks for checking out my threads and happy to hear you enjoyed them. In terms of the gravel driveway, i hated it. And to note i do all detailing inside the garage and thats also where i store my cars. Stay positive but that certainly doesn't sound to be an ideal scenario. Are you planning on (or dreaming of) paving or building a garage, or even moving? Just curious. Thankfully for me, my wife was on board with the moving primarily due to my thirst for a larger garage.

With the long gravel drive did it ever dirty up the cars after you had washed them? I love the fact that you can wash in the garage. I have to wash in my gravel drive and it makes it difficult. If it rains every vehicle ends up with red clay mud splashed all over the wheels and tires and with my IS300 being lowered it ends up all over the side of the car. I'm hoping to get started on some paint correction and getting some protection on the cars in the form of paint sealant but I'm not sure that would help the tree sap.

Don't get me wrong, I love my house (most days) and the location I'm in. I dream every day of paving my drive and building a shop/garage but it just isn't in the cards right now. We've recently considered the possibility of moving as we may have my in-laws moving in due to some ongoing health issues. Right now they would either have to build on my property, add on to my house or we'd have to move. This was my grandparents house and I've dumped 10 years of sweat equity in to it so it would be hard to walk away from. A garage is on my must-have list to consider moving and my father-in-law can't understand why. To him it's just vehicle and junk storage.

You certainly have some challenges with your current spot, but sounds like a ton of memories and time and money invested in fixing it up. Surprisingly the gravel driveway didn’t get the cars any dirtier. I guess it was mostly larger stones, but that was certainly one of my initial worries.

Picked up these game changers recently after a neighbour recommended them for me 3m Worktunes with Bluetooth. Great for when I’m riding the tractor and even doing polishing and using the metro blaster for drying.

I have the same headset and love them too. Mowing is much nicer than before and I don't feel as tired when I'm done. I also wear them if I want to be quiet working in the garage on a weekend morning when everyone else is sleeping in.

Dubber,

Here in BC we get the same thing with the small drops of what looks like sap. Turns out it is the waste of aphids, little bugs that live on and eat the trees. A quick search shows that there are treatments for them. Not much hope here as the trees are on city streets, but if the trees are on your property you might be able to mitigate the aphids and their droppings. Something to look into.

For those of us wishing we had dubber's setup, the detailing struggles are real! :)

You, sir, are the man! Although, after spending about 3 minutes reading...

"Aphids produce large amounts of a sugary liquid waste called "honeydew". The honeydew that drops from these insects can spot the windows and finish of cars parked under infested trees.

Most products used for aphid control work as contact insecticides. This means that the aphids must be hit directly with spray droplets so that they can be absorbed into the insect's body... It is difficult to treat large trees because of the high spray pressure necessary to penetrate the foliage and to reach the tallest portions of the tree... Aphid control is rarely feasible in these situations."

It appears to be a difficult problem to solve. At least I know what it is now and, well, knowing is half the battle. ;) My problem solving skills tell me I need a new garage to permanently fix said problem. Now, tell that to my wife.

Amkluttz, this is not a permanent fix but if there are no rules preventing it, why not put up a 10'x20' canopy in the driveway where you park your vehicles. They go on sale for about $100 but even at regular price of $135, it's a pretty cheap solution.

For ten times that price you can get a more permanent and two-vehicle-wide solution but still nowhere near the cost of a garage. They claim these are able to survive a hurricane:

Another great application. Yea it was very apparent that I needed to source a solution last week after mowing my neighbours lot who was away. A couple hours on the tractor and although not necessarily loud, I’m sure it wasn’t optimal :) Tuning into a podcast made the next session a breeze.

Sweet. I feel like a putz waiting so long. I really didn’t want to waste money on ear protection, although in reality it never would have been a bad investment. It is great as a two for one tool. I’ve found myself grabbing them for a quick job and not even activating the Bluetooth functionality.

Bob,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have one of the 10'x17' portable garages from Harbor Freight in the back of my driveway now. It started life as covered workspace while tiling my laundry room/mud room/bathroom during winter several years ago. Fast forward to today and it has turned in to junk storage that my wife and I are desperately trying to get rid of. The roof tarp split and I ended up putting a cheap tarp over it hoping it would hold long enough to get everything inside to other dry storage. It just looks so hideous now that we'd both like to have it gone. We not-so-lovingly refer to it as the meth tent. We've been so focused on getting it cleaned out and gone that I've never considered topping the metal frame with a metal roof. It's definitely something to think about.

I currently have a 24' wide by 22' deep concrete pad, poured at 2 different times with about 4.5" difference in height. There are a row of block on each side and they are within 3" of being level to each other. One side of this is my current 12'x22' garage. I've been trying to convince the wife that a carport style garage would be a great, non-permanent solution that would double my usable space and give her a parking spot. Fortunately/unfortunately we are a family of 5 in a 2 bedroom house; what little money we have saved is earmarked for a future bedroom addition on the house.

Another great application. Yea it was very apparent that I needed to source a solution last week after mowing my neighbours lot who was away. A couple hours on the tractor and although not necessarily loud, I’m sure it wasn’t optimal :) Tuning into a podcast made the next session a breeze.

I have said this in another thread recently but I have a set of Tozo T6 earbuds. One of the things I love about them is that the case is small so it fits in my pocket and I end up carrying them everywhere. I intended to use them for music mostly but one of the unintended benefits is that I have a form of hearing protection with me constantly. I use them when mowing or when using large tools. There's no need to turn any music on unless I want to.

That 911 looks right at home with all the other Germans in your garage.

Thanks man. Agreed. The escalation in the V.A.G lineup: VW, Audi, Porsche

I may have to pick up some details here and there just to spend time with cool cars. Love that Carrera.

One of the reasons I do it

It was pretty much all OEM original which included those TechArt goodies including the wheels.

Changed things up on the left rear side of the garage. The modular system (Husky Track Wall) is great to allow easy changes. Added two shelves to get my buckets off the ground.

And this weekend’s guest in for a detail.

When it comes to mounting things on my walls, I have "Commitment issues" haha. The slatwall seems like a great solution to this because you can change things as needed. I have a Rubbermaid fast track on one wall, but I am thinking about adding something like you have to the wall along my lift.

Some awesome guest cars you're having! Do you detail for a living or is it a side gig?

PS: I just LOVE that wagon.

In that case my job is done! 😁 very nice of you. I know this site was a constant source for getting me in the realm of planning and seeing options that others have experimented with.

Exactly! I’m the same way. That’s why these systems are perfect, no filling holes and drilling new holes. I just keep a stock of extra hanging options on hand for whenever a “great idea” strikes.

Just a side gig for me, but this garage has been incredibly helpful to do that on a bigger scale. And thanks! I freakin love the Wagen too. Thinking I’ll keep it for awhile while adding another cars to the collection.

Decided to get a little “fancy” and add a backsplash to the new age cabinet array. Also sadly hadn’t realized until I now that my new Adam’s Polishes stool works perfectly in this spot. Victory! Hahaha.

And again took advantage of the easy changes allowed by the Husky Track Wall. Wanted to find a less visually offensive spot for the other fan ;) Picked up another shelf moved one of the recycling boxes and Presto!

Yea part of the Husky Track Wall system. Sourced from Home Depot. Love the modular aspect as i'm always standing in the garage trying to figure out a better and more efficient way to organize.

Your garage is entirely too clean man. Can you throw some clutter in the corner to make some of us feel better? LOL

That is a request that would shake me to the core.

That scares me....... but sadly i believe you are correct.

Such a clean garage!

I see Audi is just as liberal with their RS badging as BMW is with the M badge these days.

That's a nice and long driveway. I must say, I really like the asphalt especially in the winter, when you need to take the snow away, the shovel and other equipment pass so nicely on it. As you're not messing that much about with older cars, you don't get the one issue, which is when you get oil stains. Those are annoying.

That wall is nice, good place for those buckets. I'm also nearly in my goal of having everything of the floor or on wheels.

One question though, where is all your stuff? :D You know, the stuff which always ends up on the table, is too big for the boxes in the lockers etc... Do you have a second garage or garden hut where you keep all that? ;)

Thanks! Yea the driveway was a huge upgrade for me. Hoping snow removal will be easier this year with my snow blower as the gravel was a huge PITA.

In terms of where is all the stuff..... I’m a pretty organized person and clutter doesn’t sit well with me. I do however have a basement which has common garage overflow for some people like Christmas decorations and such. I also have an 8x10 shed out back which holds lawn related items including bikes.

That must be the key to having everything organized. Have a place for everything, and get rid of everything that doesn't have a place. Still learning, I have accumulated so much stuff, just trying to get rid of it all, in the house and garage...

BTW, I do like the backsplash. Nice place to have a cuppa and admire the work done to a car. And it's like you measured the stool and the cabinets beforehand to make sure it fits ;)
