That is some awesome fabrication and storage design.
Is steel free where you live?

I couldn't afford the steel for the frames alone.

Thanks Steevo. I appreciate you stopping in. And as for spending my future retirement savings on steel.... Well...your the one I can thank/blame for that! :)

I had hoped to build a new workshop like yours but those plans got waylaid due to some on going family expenses so I decided to go overboard with a little of the original shop budget on the workbenches. While my existing workshop may not be great it will have some killer Steevo inspired work benches! :)

Here I am laying out the drawer glide mounting brackets:

I'm a bit confused here. In my Lista and Vidmar cabinets, the drawer glides mount into these vertical pieces that are inside the chassis. Did you rip yours out or are the Rousseaus constructed differently?

Alpine, these are warehouse rack style cabinets not standalone cabinets so they have detachable guides. It is the same for Vidmar and Lista for these type of cabinets. These are common in parts warehouses etc. because they offer more drawer configurations than a rigid steel cabinet with fixed drawers and a lower cost. The downside for these however is no leveling mechanism and that the rigidity in the cabinets comes from the interconnection of the cabinets to each other versus having a stand alone enclosed steel cabinet.

Duker really like those clamps in the pic above... How do you like them? They look like the stronghand ones but could also be Bessey since they started making a similar one that sells at homedepot... Wish I would have saved the cash and bought those... Extremely disappoint with all of my "quick release" c-clamps... Bought a bunch from harbor freight and a few of the Bessey version at lowes thought I would only have to buy those ones in a lifetime, and half of them are already broken.

HCS, I own one bessey F-style clamp and the rest I bought from HF. I love my Bessey woodworking clamps and while the Bessey welding clamp is nice it's not 4-5X as nice as the HF F-style clamps. I think I bought 12ea of the 12" clamps when they were on sale and they let me use a 25% off coupon. If I remember correctly it was under 150 bucks for all of them. I have used and abused the heck out them and have been very happy with how they have performed. I think they are a great value.

Now if you looking for some C-clamps.... I recently bought a South Bend 10k lathe and the guy threw in about 40 USA made forged C-clamps ranging in size from 3 to 15 inches. I am open to a trade....:)

Well look at that... I haven't seen them at harbor fright but they are right there... Google says so

Next coupon day I'll have to stock up!

This is the clamp that I have had bad luck with... That little button saves so much time till it breaks...

Any new cabinet builds ? Very impressive so far.

Merry Christmas, Kip

First, Merry Christmas to you as well Kip! I hope it's a great holiday.

As for the cabinets, I am building a couple of corner cabinets which will tie the hutch and workbenches together and a couple more drawer rack cabinets at the moment. This is my busy time of year so work on the cabinets has been limited. I am hoping to get some more work done next week as I am on vacation.

Nice build Duker. I got to thinking that if you built some crafty hidden access doors or panels, you could have some nice hidden storage for valuables in that corner piece.

Thanks Rick. There is some waisted space behind that cabinet that would be a good place to stash stuff but I have yet to figure out a way to access without having to break apart the whole bench. I thought about making an access panel from the top through the counter top of the bench with maybe a hanged door recessed into the steel top but I don't know if it's worth the effort. I might try and do something with the tall corner cabinets as they will have an easier way to access the unused space.

An air-valve built into the leg of the bench, it leads to pneumatic cylinders under the bench-top, which rolls vertically on drawer-slides. The cylinders raise the bench-top, exposing the FULLY STOCKED BAR that is built in and connected to the bottom of the bench-top!!! :p

A bar.... Dude, I am digging that idea. It's a complete budget breaker but I like where your head is at! :)

Someday when I make it down to Texas I expect a drink (But who can have just 1??) But in the meantime, if you manage it I will definitely help you offset the cost by making a contribution of a bottle! Something Canadian... Maybe some Crown-Royal, or the adoptive-Canadian Screech Rum? (But if it's Screech I'll be bringing a Cod if I ever make it down) ;) I really hope you do this, and can't wait to see the result if you do!!

Great idea and use of space. I'm sure some of the flat screen tv lifts would work. An actuator would definitely do the job. Would be a great hiding place. X10 on the Crown

Dunker.... first, first hope you and your family have had a nice Christmas! I have had a little more time to hang out here on GJ and plan my next attack re Storage for my new garage... your Hutch and Cabinets are amazing... and have really got me thinking... thanks so much for sharing.

I am in the process of drawing up Cabinets / Shelves along the length of my side wall (garage is 18x30 with 9.5' ceiling height) and you now have me completely distracted with tool storage...LOL! A new project for me will include getting my 30 Gallon Compressor up off the ground and building a stand or shelf for it at the end of my garage. I now know that I need a MIG and time to practice my welding... it has been a long time. Much thanks, Grant

Thanks Grant, I had a great Christmas and New Year's hope you did as well.

As for your new storage affliction.... I am afraid you have come down with a common illness gained from viewing the Garage Journal. At first you don't even realize you have it... you think "hey all I need is some storage cabinets" and the next thing you know your buying a welder, a plasma cutter and the list goes on and on! :) There is no known cure.

Good luck with the build and don't forget to post pictures! :)

OK, my mind is trying to work through the details of functionality, utility and last but not least...cost.... if I can pull off the bar in some way I am expecting those bottles of Crown AND a road trip to deliver them!

Putting the 7-drawer on casters and made independent of the rest of the bench would allow it to be rolled out to access the space inside.

I thought about that when I originally built the corner cabinet thinking I could pull it out for seating and I still may do that. It would take redesigning the cabinet to account for a brace leg behind the cabinet to support the corner of the counter top or I would have to mount a separate mounting bracket on the wall to support the top which means making the rolling cabinet shallower in either case. If I make it less deep I might not be able to fit the bar in there!

Its a good idea and while not a big issue to adjust it would mean adding one more project to the list. :)

I was envisioning simply cutting off the horizontal pieces just above and below the 7-drawer while leaving all the other pieces intact. The future height of the 7-drawer may be a problem, though, after you install casters.

As I said on your other thread, I really dig what you are doing with all of this. As for the bar in a bench, how about using something like drawer sliders to help keep it straight then using a long screw or all thread connected to an electric motor to lift it. I see something like The Asylum would have, a simple push of a button and the corner raises up and you have access to all of your whiskey, scotch, or brandy. Just stiring the pot here.

Thanks, the plan of the total bench keeps changing ( and growing ) with each section I build. I am now planning a table saw out feed table with built in storage and a height adjustable workbench ( air lift or fluid hydraulics seem to be the current path but who knows where I end up) that I will also build in some dust collection.

As for the bar,.... The current design in my head is to build it into another hutch but as a pull/slide out ... I have a 56" top and bottom going into a hutch and the bar seems to a real possibility. :)

I have been busy clearing some room in the shop for a new tool arrival so there has not been much work on the bench build. However, the cleaning freed up some space to film and make a short little Youtube video of the Hutch.

Excellent video. A full-blown video tour once everything's all completed would be great!
