Dumb newbie question

TSC has IIRC a shade # 10 Set of goggles .
Can I use these for occasional MIG welding.
Don't have a lot of money right now, But don't want to hurt my eyes either.

#10 goggles might protect your eye's but won't do much to protect your face from the UV radiation from the arc. PPE for welding is not a good place to go cheap.

Actual goggles are NOT the appropriate PPE for use when arc welding (MIG, TIG, stick, any welding process using electricity).

Arc welding produces heat (to weld with) and intense light, both visible AND ultraviolet (UV).

For arc welding, you need a 'welding helmet'. The facemask part of the helmet protects your face from heat and UV and molten metal spatter.

Welding goggles are typically a Shade#5 and are usually appropriate for use when oxy-fuel welding or brazing or soldering.

#5 would be to light at least for me. If you are talking about cutting goggles I wouldn't use those for mig welding. TSC or Harbor Frieght usually have some cheap welding hoods.

You should be able to get a basic welding helmet for less than $20 at your local welding supply house.

When I started I found an auto darkening helmet made it work. I couldn’t use the always dark shield

Yes, I think auto darkening will be the way to go.
I want to be able to see my gun and work before I hit the trigger.
What do you recommend for an auto darkening helmet that won't "break the bank"?

Harbor Freight Vulcan helmet. Use Vulcan 20% coupon.

Your question brings up one from me.

If using the above helmet for oxy/acetylene work, what is the right setting?

I just use an old flannel shirt. It works as long as you aren’t doing a lot of overhead welding.

A long sleeve denim shirt with snaps has always previously been the standard shirt for welders on the construction jobs I was on. Quick to unsnap the shirt when you are not welding to cool off a bit between rounds if you are wearing a T shirt underneath.

Thanks for the advice on the helmet too.
I have a - 20%. Coupon on my phone too.

I have used one of the $45 HF auto dark helmets in my shop for 8 years or so and have been satisfied with it. I have put 2 batteries in it over that time.

Like said hf one works. Think I got mine at Lowes or hd. Mine has settings that I can grind with it as well as weld. So when set to grind it does not darken. I hate that setting. Always forget to turn it and get a nice flash burn. So don’t pay extra for it.
Mine I think was forty.
For oxy I use just goggles. I normally do it outside so I can see a little to get going.
One bit of advice. Close your tanks when you stop working. I learned the hard way that it will leak out of the machine even if the fittings are perfect. Nothing worse then losing a whole tank of co2/argon for being lazy

Regarding clothing. Good gloves obviously. In winter I wear carhart jacket. Normal winter jacket. Summer I have leathers that I use as I’m tired of having burns in every shirt I own. They sell just sleeves that you can use. Not sure of cost. Wear boots. I constantly wear sneakers and always have slag burn through the sneaker and sock and burn between my toes.
And a cheap welding beanie. With the mask down I get sparks on my head.
Buy as you can. You will figure out what you need as you get burned. Not being wise. Everyone’s position and setup is different so everyone has different needs
