I don't have one but I would think it depends on what you plan to use it for and how often. I wouldn't want it to tie up my truck all the time but I do have a dump trailer.

Wow,,,,,,,,,, $3300 for a normal (8') sized box, at Northern. Just the thing for going after those free piles of landscape rock on CraigsList. :lol_hitti

I was wondering about those "unloader" beds? Crank to unload.

I had an EZ-Dumper dump trailer and it was very well made. They got out of the dump trailer business but are still making their bed inserts... they seem to be very popular.

You might also consider a dump trailer. That's what I have and I wouldn't want to be without.

I have an old EZ-dumper...

replaced the pump a few years ago... besides that, It's been great.

It's lifted 2-1/2 tons of stone.... that was pushing it... but it lifted it.

it's very handy at times.... but like Dave said.... it kinda sux sometime to have it back there... It also makes a racket... every bump in the road, you hear it.

I fashion a ratchet strap to the front to keep the banging down....

recently had to pull it out to pick up something wider than the dump body..

ez dumper is Exactly 48" across.

Check the weight ratings of your truck. After the weight of the dump insert I would have hardly any GVWR left to put anything in it.

Thanks for the input guys! I got an ‘11 Sierra 3500 srw so I should be good there. It’s for reasonable seized projects for a home owner. The wife vetoed another trailer or truck at the house so that limits the options too.

1/2 ton isn't suitable for much of anything IMO.

My F350 does fine with the EZ dumper.

I like mine. ;)

That reminds me. Pulled in to get fuel one day. Over at another pump was a 1 ton Dmax, jacked up to the moon and back, bling bling wheels and tires, sewer sized spout (chrome) dumping right behind the rear axle.

And what was this heavy hauler towing?

A trailer with 2 lawn mowers on it.:bounce::bounce:

I have an EZ DUmper that I purchased in 1996. One of the best things I ever spent money on.

Has been installed in a 78 3/4 Ford for years, then recently a 97 PS F350. Had a coal door cut into the tailgate to haul anthracite for my stoker.

When they come up for sale used, they don't usually last long.

If money is no object you can go with an Ameri-deck system. It will lift or dump a ton, has different bed options, and is removeable. I used one in my 1 ton Dodge and worked ok for small jobs but if you use any kind of dumper eventually your truck is gonna get dented or scratched up. I have since mounted this system on a trailer, which I like better, sold my Dodge and bought a real dump truck.

Very reliable, pretty simple set up.Used and abused.
Will take some pics tomorrow(forgot the brand name)

An insert MAY work on an F350 sew, but you won’t be hauling much. The truck probably weighs 8300 lb empty and has a gvwr of 11000 lb. Subtract a 1000 lb insert, and you are at one ton of cargo.

My F450 with an 8’ dump weighs just over 10000 empty, and has a gvwr of 14500, if I remember correctly.

A load of gravel brings the weight to 19500, well over the limit, if I don’t tell the pit guy to limit the load to two tons or so.

Plus there’s the body damage aspect. The pit guys aren’t exactly dainty when loading your truck.

The 2018 specs are 11600 gross and 7800 curb. I'd doubt the 11 is much different.

Remember, curb is got a stripped truck, less fuel, driver, and junk.

Like I said, it will probably work, but the insert will probably result in a weight limit, not a cube limit for a srw truck, if the cargo is gravel.

Great for mulch, though.

Check out a Truckcraft tc-121 aluminum dump insert, it only weighs about 400 lbs and was fairly simple to install. My friend has one and it works great, it has no problem hauling or dumping anything we have used it for even gravel.

Do you have a specific project going on right now that you need it ? If so, make a deal with the wife that you'll sell it after the project is done. While you have it, make it known to her and make her part of the decision to keep it.

I was wondering about those "unloader" beds? Crank to unload.

I had one when they first came out in an 86 f150. Worked great, I used it a lot. It hung on the wall after I sold my truck waiting to go to the next truck, but I never got one. Then it burned in "the fire".

Do dump inserts work with bed covers? I don't see trucks around anymore that actually use the bed.

Just some smaller projects. Problem is the limited space for parking another vehicle and for the price of the insert what can I get? A 80’s dump truck in lord only knows the condition. So considering they are home owner projects I figured even if it took two trips for a load what’s the harm? Only other concern is the width of the floor in the bed.

Load Handler, that's the one I had.

For occasional homeowner use, its pretty hard to beat.

The EZ Dumper is 4 feet across the inside bottom of the dump bed if that helps.

For battery power, I purchased a dual terminal battery. Top posts went to the truck, side terminals(GM) went to the dumper. Or you can buy the brass post bolt extenders and make the connections on a top post only battery.

I’d go wiTh a dump trailer any day or an insert. Save your truck from getting smashed up

i'd just find someone locally with a dump truck.

there must be someone you can hire hourly to pickup and dump materials. it'll cost way less, you won't have another piece of gear to maintain and you won't have to drive around with a dump insert in your truck all the time.

There is the question of where to store the insert when you're not using it - and how to get it in and out of the truck. Depending on how often you use it, I've just rented a dump trailer here and there from the local yard.

Ask the CFO if she will OK a flatbed dump on that truck. That would be the ticket. I have thoughts about doing just that on my 2500 HD Ram :) I keep talking myself out of it because of the fifthwheel camper I have.

I see it as a space and weight thief for occasional use.
If you get one I would have an elevated parking spot for so it can be removed and inserted with out too much fuss.

With a 3500 a dump trailer would be a much better choice. I can rent a 14 footer for 50 bucks a day here.

My dump box came out of a pickup truck. Can't remember the name on the nameplate? Anyways I mounted it on a 2 axle trailer. Convenient Yes? Inconvenient Yes! It will haul and dump 5 ton which when spread out on average homeowner projects will barely fill a good size mud hole.
I thought long and hard about converting it back into a slide-in for a truck box. Finally realized that it would take more planning than a moments notice to "hook up & go"!

Smaller projects, thought maybe you had a decent sized reno or similar going on.

Food for thought, I was at my local HD they other day and in the outside equipment rental area, they had a dump trailer. NO idea if there's one local to you or what the cost would be but might be worth checking out.

Dang that's pretty cool and simple. Too bad its max rating is only 2000lbs. I still have about 5 more yards of gravel to get when the weather improves. Did 5 already last fall and shoveling it out by hand kinda blows.

I like the kits that convert the stock box to tilt.
No load space used and they only raise the bed a bit.

Check that your insurance does not reclassify the truck as a "dump"
The rates go up a lot.

Been a bit since i've looked at them, but i think the filler neck is typically a problem to line up well. That said, this could be a good option as it adds minimal weight, but it will still result in a beat up truck over time

Works great for spreading gravel. You have someone drive slowly while you crank, makes an even layer, kinda.
