Good morning. I'm trying to figure out what all should be in this tool box and when it was made. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to attach multiple pics to one post.

First of all, welcome to GJ.

Unless there is some limit for junior members I don't know about, you should be able to attach up to 7 images in one post. Hit [Go Advanced], then [Manage Attachments], and it should open a browser to attach files (again, up to 7 per post) from your computer.

Secondly, that is a cool *** set! I've never seen that label before. The ratchet is from a refrigeration set. There are no special sockets (with slots and edges etc for packing glands and such) in that set, though, so I'm guessing it's a replacement (for a missing regular 1/4-inch drive ratchet), or the other way around. The "RS" in the model number might indicate "refrigeration set", in which case, maybe the sockets don't belong, or possibly it didn't have any special packing gland type sockets. EDIT: I take that back. I do see at least one special packing gland socket.

Please post more pics of the pieces with the red hexagonal handles. Are they bushing tools or peening punches or what?

You should post these and more photos in the Duro-Indestro thread, linked here.

Lastly, if four.cycle happens along, he may have some ads to help you out. I have the 1939 and 1941 Duro-Chrome catalogs, and there are no "Doggone Good" branded tools in it. If anyone has anything on this, it would be him.

There are some refrigeration sockets in there. Looks like a mixed set of stuff. I think those red things are carb stands

Yup. I saw the reefer sockets hiding in there after my initial post. You may have missed my edit. Interesting call on the carb stands ID. They look to be different sizes though, no?

I have some old ads from 4.c on my home computer. I'll go through them later. Unless he gets to this thread first. I don't think I was aware of this branding before. I like it!

I don’t know what carb stands are. These things look like punches but they are really rounded.

Looks to be a mix of sockets. Some weird duro chrome ones and some random ones like Blackhawk and Giller.

I appreciate all the responses and I have been trying to post more pics but it isn’t letting me do it from my phone for some reason.

Pic 1: Punches for swaging. It's a hand swaging kit for tubing for lines in and out of refrigeration units (or brake lines, and other automotive vehicle lines. etc). Very nice! (Carb for carburetor. Carb stands are for working on a carburetor, but that's not what they are.)

Pic 2: Those are the refrigerator sockets. Duro.

Pic 3: Standard sockets that also went in many reefer kits. Also appear to be Duro.

I can't find the TM, but that dog and the "Doggone Good Tools" branding is all over the 1951 Duro Metal Products catalog. It's featured in the Intro and it's on the bottom of every page. So sometime between WWII and 1951. Funny. I know the 1939 and the 1941 catalogs like the back of my hand, but this is the first time I have ever cracked that 1951 catalog open.

snippet from 1946 Motor vol 85 page 81:

".. to use, that's the kind you want and that's the kind DURO will keep right on being. That's why every day millions of mechanics say, "DURO?— That's a doggone good tool!" Duro Metal Products Co., 2649 No. Kildare Ave., Chicago 39, Illinois ..."

Thanks. That makes sense. They were my grandfathers tools and he would have gotten them when he got out of the Navy most likely. So sometime after 1946.

It looks like it may have been something like this 18-piece set.

attachment.php

This set has a different model number (5650) than yours (4518-RS), which is strange, because their 1/4-inch drive sets were always 45XX series, and even the individual pieces are still 45XX even though the set number is 5650. If anything, that probably confirms your set is slightly older than 1951.

See if you can match the piece part numbers to the piece part numbers in the contents list.

Looks to me like you are missing one (1) packing gland socket, one (1) standard socket, one (1) of the extensions, and the adaptor for the ratchet. That would be a plug with a male drive stud that fits into the female opening of the ratchet to drive the female opening sockets.

But it's fairly complete. See if you can find the adaptor/drive plug. That's a critical piece.

The drive plug is in there.
There should be two of them, actually. One drive plug and one 1/4-to-3/8 adapter drive plug. Looking at Otg's set made me study the contents list harder. The special reefer sockets are all 45XX 1/4-inch drive. And five (5) of the standard sockets are 45XX 1/4-inch drive. But three (3) of the standard sockets are 44XX 3/8-inch drive! So you actually need the second plug with the 3/8-inch step up to drive those.

Looks like the same exact era as Va45's.

Duro Chrome 4518RS 1.4 dr refrigeration socket set - 1939 Duro Chrome catalog No. 39M pp 82.jpg Duro Chrome February 15 1940 Distributor Net Price List.jpg

The 4518RS Refrigeration socket set appears on page 82 in the 1939 Duro Chrome catalog No. 39M

The February 15 1940 Duro Chrome Distributor Net Price List shows the 4518RS refrigeration socket set as appearing on page 15 of the catalog, but page 15 of the 1940 catalog shows no such set.
The "Distributor Net" price was $3.75 in the 1940 price list
The "List Price" (MSRP) was $12.50.
