:confused:Hi

I have a Makita compound mitre saw.It gets light hobby use.Very good tool.
I only use a mask when I use it,but the garage.workshop gets very dusty, even with the small Makita dust collector bag attached to the exhaust pipe.I am now a bit concerned about the health issues in that the mask is not enough.

From here on in,I only intend to use the saw in the open air,and have built a substantial trolley on castors to wheel it out.

Plenty of warnings around about fine particle dust ,and extractors that go down to 0.5 micron levels ,but I don't want to spend about 400 quid ($700 ish) on a shop dust extraction system if I only intend to use only in the open air.

Would my mask be good enough for open air use of the saw? ALSO(this is essential)
What if I JUST attached a pipe to the exhaust of the saw and stuck the end in a big disposable plastic bag,as I don't want all that stuff going into the air.

Regards

Rothko

Don't ask.
Connecting it to shop vac will collect more dust than just exhausting to a bag. Even a regular vacuum cleaner would work but fill up quickly.

You need the vacuum to **** the dust out. the masks are good, but particulate can still get in around the seals and sides of the mask. A good shop vac with an adapter to match your outlet on your makita will make a noticeable difference. A $99 Homedepot model or similar is all you really need. Big enough that you're not constantly emptying the drum. Check the HD website or amazon for wet/dry vac adapter kits, or Home Depot and Lowes and ACE sell them too.

For just hobby use, you're probably ok, even without the mask. However, for safety's sake if it ever will be used in closed spaces, the cheapest option is probably a mask, + a wall or ceiling mounting dust filtration system (JET makes one sold at menards near me) that I think is about 250 bucks.
