Thanks Timewarp, Have you used one of these kits on anything of yours yet? I've been doing my research on turbos for the FE and I keep reading that I need to buy one that's of fairly high quality - if it's going to last any time at all on the 390l. I know it'll cost a bunch more, but do want it to last! Cheers.

Ive found most of the kits provide you with alot of extra parts ina box that you cant use as they are all universal. better to order the bends that you need.

Turbos stay with the bigger names,

Yes, As a matter of fact I have used the "cheaper" turbo's 3 times now and not a single failure. The first "pair" installed on a 351w that had 180k miles on it.
Engine failed but the turbo's did not, they were then put on a 347 small block and are still going almost 7 yrs later.

This was "mock up"

Also the Honda Rail I posted earlier and another 347 in a capri.

On the other hand I purchased a big $$ Turbonetics turbo for my own truck and it had a very short life. Most people were getting 2-4000 miles out of one and they were around 1700.00 just for turbo.

I bought what I thought was the best turbo going for my 7.3L diesel they all had very short life. My original 7.3L turbo lasted 49,000 miles and because of time Ford would not warranty.

Less than a year ago I replaced it again. This time with a upgraded replacement ball bearing turbo from Garrett at a cost of 2200.00

Here is another we just ended up rebuilding on a early 7.3L because the Big $$ one did not last.

So to answer your question of good and bad turbo's yes! but it is not always what the vendor's lead you to believe.

There is no such KIT as a turbo kit that is direct bolt on for a FE engine.
Fab work is going to be needed. Just a decent intercooler and piping will set you back 550.00 or so which was included in the kit price I gave you.

I am sure there are better turbo's out there than what I have in kit but they would be direct replacement. For the amount of miles you will drive the Galaxie I would not forsee you ever having to change them.

A complete bolt on kit will usually run you around 5000.00 that is a far cry from the what 900.00 I quoted. I would actually do 750.00

That would give you room to upgrade any parts needed.

As far as I know there are no Turbo' headers made for a FE. A simple home deal to make them yourself. Even starting with a cast iron manifold upside down.

So as long as money is not an object you can put together a better (Piecemeal) system than what I have! I offered it to you for 1000.00 less than I have in it.

If it were a easy & cheap task there would be more people doing it!

If you search the internet there are maybe 2 or 3 FE turbo's running around that I could find.

I must have misunderstood what you were trying to accomplish.

I will just put it on ebay.

oh yeah, here is a big $$ turbo from Turbonetics. I got more miles than most.

Expected life was around 2-4000 miles no warranty!

Surprise! Mrs E-tek buys a sled....and I get to sort it out....

So after draining, cleaning and conditioning all the fuel lines and passages, then finding out I needed a tank line and screen, I got back to more pressing matters....

Like the Camaro's AC system!

image.jpg

And once that's done, oly a few more parts to go....

After retorfitting the controls from mechanical to electronic, I re0installed it in the dash -

IMG_0378.JPG

With that part done, another hole was required, for the wiring -

IMG_0375.JPG

IMG_0380.JPG

With most of that done, I needed to get to the serpentine kit installation, which will allow us to mount the AC pump in the engine bay -

IMG_0382.JPG

IMG_0381.JPG

Stalled already!!! The GD aluminum hardward used on the water pump pulley galled and froze in the steel pulley mount...

Necessitating my having to drill them out, which took all of the last hour of my shop time before Xmas - D'Oh!

IMG_0383.JPG

IMG_0384.JPG

And on that note - Merry Christmas to all!

You're welcome. It is probably the largest thread I've ever seen! Is garage journal charging you storage fees?

A very Merry Christmas to you and your family.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO MY GJ COMRADES! :rocker:

Been busy in the E-tek Rod Shop....the March Pulley system is now mostly done, except for the AC pump portion....

IMG_0416.JPG

Believe it or not, although this is a specific AC-pump mounting kit, a pulley for the AC pump, along with the 2 serpentine belts required to run the system, were not included in the kit! Argh!! :eyecrazy:

IMG_0419.JPG

Also, the fuel filter won't be able to stay in this spot, as the AC pump requires the same real-estate...

IMG_0417.JPG

Next up on the Camaro project is an ididit tilt-column upgrade:

After getting past all the Engine, AC and interior wiring bits, I am moving on to replacing all the parts removed for paint, including swapping the door glass and window mechanisms over from the old doors to the new:

Would it be possible to run the lines in from the wheel wells?
Let me be more to the point, could I run the lines in from the wheel wells on my 70 Mustang? I have a Martz front end, so none of the stock fender aprons or shock towers remain. Thanks

E-Tek....since you put the March Serpentine system on, did you have to change the water pump to a reverse flow like most serpentine systems run, or does March make it where you can still use the factory water pump. It would be a shame to bolt all of that up only to find out the water pump has to be swapped out now. There's been a lot of people really overheat an engine by not changing the water pump when they put a serpentine system on. They'll just go buy a standard 350 water pump, then can't figure why the engine overheats right from the get go.

looking great! what's in the engine, I missed that part.

jim

I can't recall all the details, but its a 383 stoker kit with ARP heads, long tube headers, an Edelbrock intake, Demon Carb and more. Enough power to burn off the tires without touching the front bake!

i would think you could, especially if you subscribe to the adage "Customize to your hearts and wallets content".

March designs their systems for a stock rotating pump.

That's great to know. Once I get momma's Cutlass back out of storage, I'd like to pull the engine and put a March system on it, and with it being an Olds, it's like super hard to find parts that I want, so every dime saved is great.

The Camaro is looking good. ANy idea how much more time you are going to have in it?

Re: E-tek Resto's 56 Chevy Truck

.....aaaand.....done! :) It was really hard to get that thing to seat! It's heavy when you're trying to hold it up when it just won't go. I finally grabbed some extra long bolts and used them to snug it up while turning the spline shaft from the prop shaft end.

100_0334.JPG

Detailed a few more parts:

100_0335.JPG

100_0336.JPG

100_0338.JPG

Then installed the steering rack and hooked up the arms.

100_0341.JPG

100_0344.JPG

Lots of new seals, gaskets and fastener sets - everything else gets sandblasted and/or wire wheeled. I paint very few fasteners as it just flakes of when torqued.

100_0347.JPG
i often work alone and the trans is difficult to wrestles. i cut the heads off two bolts and saw a screwdriver slot in the same end. Then screw the studs in the top two bellhousing holes. Slide the trans over the studs. Screw the bottom two bolts snug to hold the trans. Replace the top two studs with bolts and your done. Easy even from a creeper.

That Camaro is looking amazing Ed! I've finally made it through this entire thread and your blog - you do great work and beginners like me really appreciate the time you spend documenting it.

I can't wait to see the results of the next car show once the Z28 is finished.
