Eaton vs Quincy

Getting a little ahead of my self as garage construction hasn't even started but based on the invaluable assistance this board provides I have pretty much decided on one of the following:
Eaton PP05V060I1 or
Quincy 2V41C60VC

Both are 5hp/2 stage/single phase/60gal vertical compressors that probably would suffice no matter what I do.

My principal question is, which one is likely to be quieter?

Of course any other observations/input would be appreciated.

One thing that struck me as odd was the Eaton weighs 600 pounds while the quincy is 460. What would drive this? (oh yeah, and those darned Eaton people even offer a choice of colors as if you didn't have enough decisions to make already - LOL).

Something that I notice is that the Eaton runs at 650rpm vs the Quincy that runs at 1310rpm. The Eaton will almost certainly be quieter. Supposedly the Eaton puts out slightly more air at 175psi also.

Quincy has a great reputation on their oil pressure lubricated compressors The Quincy you are looking as do not have that feature.

Eaton also has a great reputation and IMO is well made. They have more to offer for the $$$ and are quieter. I vote for Eaton.

I haven't heard an Eaton but my 5 horse, 2 stage Quincy with an 80 gallon tank is pretty quiet. I built a compressor addition because that piece of **** Craftsman 5hp was too loud to keep in the shop. When we wired up the Quincy I could not believe how quiet it was and how fast it caught up with my blast cabinet. With the vacuum of my cabinet turned off you can actually have a conversation in the 8' by 18' addition.

I cannot offer much of an opinion, But I will say that the quincy comes with a Baldor motor wich is the top of the line in motors, cannot comment anything on the eaton compressors.

My eaton came with a WEG motor. My buddy bought the exact eaton compressor I have 5 months earlier and it has a baldor motor. I was told WEG is top of the line as well.

I can easily talk on a cell phone beside my Eaton compressor.....Very quiet.

Thanks to all for the input. Very much appreciated. Looks like either way I can't go wrong. Looking like Eaton.

I'll bet the motor is too. The pump is a chinese knock off of a Saylor-Beal. The Eaton is assembled in Ohio from offshore components. I think the Quincy is all american.(???) If you can spend a little more get a Quincy QT-5.

I'll bet the motor is too.

Here is a rundown on the parts on my Eaton:

Compressor: China

Motor: WEG--made in Brazil OR Baldor--made in USA I believe
They sell compressors with both brands of motors. My buddy bought the exact compressor I have 5 months earlier and it has a Baldor....mine has a WEG.

Tank: Is certified in Abingdon, Virginia and made in USA

Big Belt Guard: USA

Assembled: Eaton, Ohio

Unsure of the origin of the Automatic tank drain or the ball valves.

I really like it. The last compressor I will ever have to buy. Turns at 600 rpm:

I am very happy with my Quincy. No experience with Eaton. The air intake is a major source of noise so a noise cancelling air filter makes a world of difference.

Some of the castings for Quincy are imported (India I believe). I don't know of any substantial items on the SB that are imported.

This thread has me thinking about a new compressor now. I was looking at both mentioned by OP, but I'm a little confused about RPM. The Eaton says something about 650 RPM, but further down in the specs, it says "True 5 HP Single Phase or 3-Phase Name Brand Motor – 1750 RPM – 208/230/460/480V" Which is it?

They are both around the same price, $1199-$1249 and both offer free shipping. I can get the Quincy for $1199 and the Eaton for $1249.

I just need something better than I have now (The Husky single stage from Home Depot). I need something to keep up with air tools, my blasting cabinet and occasionally some heavy sandblasting. To the OP (Bill) what did you decide on?

Right now I'm leaning toward the Eaton, but I guess it's just a coin toss. Both seem like nice units. The Eaton says "This unit includes $430.00 in features at no additional charge", whatever that means

The 650 RPM they are refering to is the pump RPM. Slower should last longer and be quieter. Some of the extras are motor adjusting plate, automatic tank drain, and magnetic starter.

FlameOut,

I would also look at Champion air compressors, specifically Advantage series. Champion is a division of Gardner Denver.

Eaton rubs me the wrong way. Their site is full of salesmanship, just like the quote you posted about $430 in feature at no additional charge. I guess they are giving that to you out of the goodness of their heart. In addition, their past responses to the folks in regards to the expose link that I posted turned me off of them for good.

I have no experience with Eaton.
I've had my Quincy QT-5 for over 10 years now and haven't had a single problem. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

The Eaton website specifically says shipping is NOT included. Do you see some recent post that says otherwise? Last month they quoted me $272 for shipping to my business address. That makes the Eaton about 20% more expensive than the Quincy. Doesn't that make it an easy choice?

When I was looking at compressors, I looked at the Eaton........

While doing my research on them, and mainly from their info. I felt like I was dealing with a get rich quick scheme. It just felt strange, almost too good to be true type of deal. I had some email correspondence with them and I remember them saying the parts came from China and were assembled in the US.......even that didn't bother me as bad as the backroom feeling, marketing campain......

My buddy bought a Quincy......I'm still envious, even with my smokin' good deal of a Belair (it has an import pump, if I recall.....)

Oh ****, I voiced my opinion, now I'll get a letter!

Here is my checkout infor from the Eaton website (I didn't purchase it, just went to the checkout page)
Shipping and Handling:
None $0.00
Taxes: $0.00
Your Total: $1,249.00

I think I'll probably go with the Quincy though. I was just a little concerned with the aluminum head of the Quincy

I swear I saw something about free shipping. I guess I was mistaken. Well, for sure not the Eaton is not one of my choices.

How tough is it getting a 500 lb compressor off of the delivery truck? I see that Quincy has a $100 Unload or Liftgate Service. I certainly didn't want to add 10% to the price of a compressor for 2 minutes use of a lift gate

In a tractor trailer, it's all but impossible without a forklift or a liftgate. Even if you have enough guys to help, it's awkward, oddly shaped, and sometimes hard to find good places to grab. The potential for someone getting hurt is significant. IMO a liftgate fee - and granted, $100 is a little excessive, most places only charge $50 - is money well spent.

You might buy from a local dealer. I did that with my Champion compressor, & he delivered it at no extra charge.

I was looking at both of these and still don't know which is superior, or even if one is better than the other. However, I was rather pissed when I wasted time and energy bidding on the Eaton compressors on ebay that were not "Buy it now price". When I could never reach the reserve after numerous trys on several compressors, I finally called Eaton-who was the actual seller. They told me that the reserve was the actual current selling price listed on their website. That meant that all the bids below the listed price on their company website were a total waste of your time. That's like playing a slot machine that NEVER pays off!

I looked at them both.. Went with the blue one.. seemed to be better made.

Not very loud.

Nice set up, I went with the Qt-5 from a local craigslist sale. Just getting it set up, where did you get the Aro regulator/filter setup?

check the for sale ads, I was surprised that champions, Quincy's, etc were out there only a few years old.
