Hey 4C, the list of brands made by New Britain gets even more complex than thought in the 27 known brands Spin must buy! When Stanley ended up getting the New Britain patents in the Blackhawk deal, they used their New Britain mechanism several other places well after New Britain shut down. I don't know all of them by any means. It gets pretty complex. - Paul

paul you'd have to read through that entire thread I cited above to suss out who New Britain was making ratchets for, but there is a list in there of the 27 brands that were known to have been buying ratchets from NB.

winlinmac there's a mess of different threads about torque wrenches. I have no idea what you're looking for, so I cannot even guess what might be suitable - it all depends upon your intended purpose. I get by just fine with a tiny 1/4" drive inch-pound beam type - more than enough for my needs.

Spn1025 the "franken ratchets" appear every now and then in Ebay listings, but I see far more of them in sets than I do as solos. I think there's a "franken ratchet" thread here somewhere. I don't own one - they're too ugly for me.
I know there are at least one or two ratchets listed here that you don't own yet.

I know, but do you know how many versions using the NB mechanism that Stanley produced over the years under different brand names? I sure don't. I think the known ones made while New Britain was still around are pretty well understood. But there were alot of later ones, that might as well be made by New Britain proper as they surely used much of the same equipment under Stanley. Perhaps not of terribly significant interest to most but is to a New Britain collector!!! - Paul

paul - Truecraft was a line we dibble-dabbled in a couple times on some promo deals - we never carried the full line. Same sales rep as Thorsen then - Don Hall / Hall & Hall Co. - I have a 1/2" drive Truecraft set - about half of it's been replaced with Husky and Craftsman now - in the context of the times it wasn't bad stuff, actually - way less money than US made stuff - and a step above the usual Taiwan-import stuff that was coming in during the 70s and 80s. I am assuming that piece is from that era - for the price it's hard to beat.

Eh the head of the Fleet is a little wobbly, but ratchets fine and all of the teeth are fine. Would that just be the springs?

I read on another thread that the springs are the same as a Proto

Spin, I just put a dab of silver color auto touch up paint on the engravings on tools. Prevents rust later and not too noticeable then. If already rusty, go through evapo-rust first if chrome and then the touch of paint. While I like tools of course, even my very best are meant to be used as tools. And once they get used, they get scratched up anyhow, so I don't really care about engravings. But that is me. That is why used on ebay or anywhere is fine with me most of the time too - I don't need brand new or want to pay for it either when used and functional are 1/2 price or less. Spn. I would complain depending on how the seller described it. If he described it as "like new" or excellent condition, i would sure as hell complain. Even if you ultimately keep it, see what he has to say for himself.

^ Most savvy Ebay tool sellers will note whether the item is engraved. Some are oblivious to engraving making any difference - they just aren't "tool people".
It is reasonable to assume that an item is not marked/damaged/engraved if the item description claims it to be "good shape", "excellent", or something along that line.
I try to be real careful about avoiding anything engraved. Occasionally I'll list something here that's been engraved, but only if it's a great price.
If it's not mentioned in the ad and I sense doubt, I'll message the seller first and ask.
In your case, "reasonable" would be to contact the seller and simply tell them you're not happy with the item and see if they'll offer some sort of recourse.
I've had few problems with Ebay sellers - they were relatively minor issues - and in every case the seller bent over backwards to make it right.

So, other than the engraving, what do you think of "Urrea" now that it's in your hand?
