^^^I'd figure, its better go with a 4" bench vise, bolt it to a piece of wood, or small concrete block and clamp it on a table using bar clamps when portability necessitates. Shall see how long that lasts :D

winlinmac: small clamp-on vises appear in the listings all the time. it's just a matter of finding them. they were made by all kinds of manufacturers: Stanley, Indestro, many others.
some sellers focus on vises, like this guy: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=jalchav38&_sop=10
just a matter of poking around until you find them. this tiny KAL aluminum vise set me back about $20 incl. shipping:

so now that you have the KAL 1/4" drive ratchet in your hand, compare it with the photo of the Klein 1/4" drive ratchet you just posted.
is it possible KAL/Proamerica was the supplier for Klein on those sockets and ratchets?
and/or maybe the Wilde sockets and drive tools?

selector handle is different, of course.

those 3/8" sets in the red boxes were reduced in price by the seller - I think I just posted one of them a few days back (maybe a week?)

hard for me to tell about if they're the same as Klein... to me, most of these knurled handle wrenches look the same lol. I think you might be right though.

large KAL USA collection. I see a small engraving on one piece. Examine the pics carefully if you're interested. Small amount of rust on some. Paint on others, should be able to get that off.

Also, there's a bunch of duplicates. I think I see 7 7/8" wrenches.

Auction just ended, sold for $115.06. Forgive me for reporting this, I know that most guys here are into US and some German stuff, but I just like vintage Facom France tools. I considered bidding on the set, but I already have one and a second vintage Dowidat offset wrench set, so this would have been difficult to justify...

The second set (listed as Buy It Now at $195) is still available from the same seller. I guess this second set won't sell at this high price and be relisted.

I'd like to suggest not putting snap on auctions in this thread unless it's a BIN price that is killer. Any snap on auction that is worthwhile that starts low will bid up quickly. The reason I post this is related to the ratchets on the last page...that TL72 started around $6 and will be at $50 before it sells. So it is almost a waste of time to look for those to post up here.

Any other comments/thoughts?

Matt, while this does make some sense with Snap-On, any GJ member is free here to post any auction they want to and I want to encourage all to do so. What is not of interest to you may be for others. Some also like to *watch* auctions and not necessarily *bid* on auctions here, so even if the price goes high on something, the watchers can do their watching.

I'd really like to see more non-hand tool auctions listed myself. More power tools would be nice, corded and cordless. And other things homeowners/garage owners could use that are deals. I'm often surprised by just what can be found at auction that can be handy if I only knew to look out for it. This is the kind of thing I hope for here - another GJ member can find that thing and look out for you for it and post it here.

By the way! Looks like in the Primaries tonight, Indiana finally mattered for once! Indiana is always so very late in the game that rarely do the primaries matter at all by that point. Nice to see tonight Indiana's vote counts. - Paul

re: Ebay seller marknmandee
http://www.ebay.com/usr/marknmandee

the seller has boatloads of US-made (and Japan-made) military/GSA surplus listed. KAL, Proamerica, JS Tool, Wilde, etc.

KAL: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odk...TR11.TRC2.A0.H0.Xkal+.TRS1&_nkw=kal+&_sacat=0

JS Tool: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odk...0.TRC0.H0.Xjs+tool.TRS1&_nkw=js+tool&_sacat=0

Proamerica: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odk....H0.Xproamerica.TRS1&_nkw=proamerica&_sacat=0

Wilde: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odk...11.TRC2.A0.H0.Xwilde.TRS1&_nkw=wilde&_sacat=0

lots of other stuff - I've dealt with them - got some Wilde pliers from them dirt cheap - no problems.

reason I don't list much of their stuff here is their shipping charges sometimes seem awfully high, and a lot of the stuff is marked/engraved (being military surplus.) the prices are usually pretty good, though.

same/same with this seller in Texas:

keystone_enterprises: http://www.ebay.com/usr/keystone_enterprises

has lots of the same kind of stuff. cheap. usually engraved. some of it's beat to hell so you have to look pretty closely at the photos. have also dealt with him - great seller - no problems. he lists quite a few items "OBO" and usually is willing to deal.

both of them are worth a look.

I wonder if I can find these any more (COO: USA), more or less vintage. I know HJE sells Wilde for around $30, but are they really worth it? There's also Wright around $66. Seems like an easy way for dirt and grime to sneak in. The ones at Harbor Freight are encased. What are your thoughts?

I personally hate everything about those style ratchet wrenches.
I did own a set of the Harbor Freight ones, but never used them. Gave them away free.

Hey 4C, on MarkNMandee:

reason I don't list much of their stuff here is their shipping charges sometimes seem awfully high, and a lot of the stuff is marked/engraved (being military surplus.) the prices are usually pretty good, though.

I had thought about getting several of their listings a few weeks back. So I sent the guy a note asking on their combined shipping policy. Well, he refused to tell me one after multiple emails! In other words, don't expect any combined shipping, and their individual auction shipping costs were very high. He ended up being a complete idiot and very annoying just asking him the question. I refuse to buy from Ebay sellers who will not do combined shipping or make their policy known for multiple listing purchases. I won't buy from them. My 2 cents on that guy. There are too many great sellers who are reasonable and charge actual shipping or very close to mess with idiots who are greedy and base their business model on the shipping charges. - Paul

I had a set of those from Craftsman, Snap-on, and Apollo. Sold the sets and now, I have a couple odd sizes in SAE from Proto and Craftsman. I work on planes and sometimes the length of the newer ratcheting wrench just won't fit, esp in cabins and flight decks.

Really interested now in Wright's Double Pawl ratchets, any feedback on those?

Winlin, you really gotta use the GJ search function in the general tools discussion section. There will be dozens talking about Wright rachets. I have only I think two of them but they are among my most favored rachets. These are the rachet brands I like the most, having tried many:

Wright, SK (course and fine), KAL, JS Tool, Indestro, MAC, Proto, Walden (tough but course though), Armstrong, Williams/Snap-On, LOVE New Britain including NAPA USA, New Britain label, Blackhawk before Proto relationship, Husky USA then, some Thorens are ok, and yes, I do like the Pro Harbor Freight ones too for fine action. When I work on something, I'll grab different rachets or socket sets often and mix up what I use. I find that to be most fun and also let's me enjoy my tool collection and appreciate the differences between the tools. Many tools work great, but most have pros or cons in one or more ways. Sometimes it is just a feel thing. Spin's latest dive into the rachet brands is a great way to learn about all this. We just need him to add some oil and *use* them and report back on what he likes/dislikes! Take a week off from the internet Spin and report back !!! :rocker: :eyecrazy: - Paul

Current Status,

^^^Really am looking forward to Spn's critique on the various brands of ratchets recently acquired. I would try the vintage brands, but am concerned over replacement kits in the long run. I've come across, Wright (not double pawl), SK, modern Snap On (not sure about COO), Proto, Armstrong, and the store-brands (USA and Import). The Wright ratchet I owned for a short time was a 3430 (stubby 3/8" Drive, but arrived with a fracture on top, and gave me a mixed perception over the quality of Wright).

I'm willing to give Wright another try, but would definitely favor the idea of buying new over used. Also, I'm going to have to lubricate the ratchets I own currently.

I don't think anyone here prefers long handle 1/2" ratchets (might as well keep using the breaker bar for such applications)

Been trying to acquire a 1/4" Thumbwheel SK Ratchet, couldn't find any in the same price range as the 3/8" drive deal that was on earlier (still live)

Trying to also find a decent deal on a Clamp On Vise for the extra hand. May have to resort to import on this one

Lastly, any feedback on Knipex Raptor Pliers? HJE has them for a relatively fair price. I have the Channellock Nutbusters, but don't prefer the aggressive teeth as they mar the surface.

Thanks again!

If you guys are looking for other good searches I've found good deals on high quality casters on ebay. I'm looking for clamps, especially for machining/welding.

When you buy Armstrong MAXX ratchets, make sure you get the 88 tooth, not the older 60. The 60 can be upgraded to the 88, but unless you're getting a crazy deal, who wants to pay 20 bucks for the replacement repair kit.

My armstrong ratchets are just about my favourite, that or the dual 80s.
