I won an Armstrong 3/4 drive ratchet yesterday for $26. But the guy wants to charge me $86 to get it to me. Can anyone tell me if that seems a bit steep, or is that average for a tool of that size?

Seems just a wee bit steep! How much is the seller making on the shipping, I wonder...$20 for 'handling'?

Seems pretty high to me. I dont know what it weighs, but I just shipped some guy in CA a camera, and a bunch of other stuff and it cost like $33(including insurance) to ship a 12ib package.

Where is the seller? Possibly a member here could pick it up for you and ship it to you without the seller outrageous shipping charges. I just shipped something from MA to OH that weighed 28 pounds, and it cost $21.50 including $400 worth of insurance, by UPS.
The seller could get a USPS triangular Priority Mail shipper, and use that, and it wouldn't cost $86!!!!!!

A 25# package from MA to CA cost $48.25 by Priority Mail and $29.88 by Parcel Post.

That is seriously over inflated shipping and e-bay pulls accounts for such transgressions. The ratchet will fit in a priority mail flat rate box it will cost less then 15 with packing materials to ship.

I've shipped many 3/4 ratchets and torque wrenches with cases and I can tell you $86.00 is an outrageous charge. Sounds like he's trying to make up in shipping what he did not get in the sale.

If it's the one BWP linked to the shipping charge I'm quoted is $16.72 for UPS Ground.

NEVER buy on eBay or anywhere else without an agreed-upon shipping cost. My favorite explanation from a seller about why his 'handling' cost was so high, "My daughter does it all for me and she needs the money more than UPS."

Bottom line for me, packaging and addressing costs should be included in the selling price. Shipping should be at actual cost. If a seller wants to pad his profits with handling, packaging and shipping markups or worse, sub it out to UPS Store and charge you, find another source.

thnx, jack vines

My guess is shipping price was listed in the listing as all ebay listings now have. Simply put the seller can ask whetever he wants so long as its clearly stated. YOU AGREED TO HIS TERMS WHEN YOU BID! Be a man and pay him what you promised and knew he was asking delivered. To try and worm him down is pretty much a slime thing to do. Now if the shipping was not shown then and only then do you have a gripe. A seller can ask whatever he wants and you have the right to bid or not bid. I am so sick of this childish BS from adults. Small wonder why this country is going to ****.

There IS a shipping calculator in the listing, and it showed $13.96 for me. Did you not see this calculator when you bid??? Did it show $86? Needless to say, the time to question a shipping fee is PRIOR to bidding, not after you win the auction. The number quoted for me tells me the seller is probably NOT padding the shipping fee. I know you are a LOT further away than I am, but the amount you quoted seems crazy. Why not ask the seller to double check the shipping rate; there could be an error somewhere.

This one?

3/4 Ratchet

$86 is out of line. Should be no more than $15 to ship. BTW I use FedEx Ground almost exclusively for the tracking convenience and insured value. I'm sure others have a preferred shipper they use too.

This happened to my nephew once too on eBay, he bought a Chinese rivet gun for $0.99 but forgot to look at the $90 shipping charge...ouch

The seller has decent feedback. Perhaps it is just an error. I would contact him and see. Suggest another shipping method.

Did you accidentally select overnight shipping or something odd?

Link to the listing so we know what you are talking about.

It cost $63,57 to ship it to Anchorage Alaska, and I have to believe that you live a lot closer than Alaska. Something is wrong..

Contact the seller, I think you (or the seller) linked to the wrong shipping method. If he wants more than the stated shipping in the auction, you can report him.
Let us know how this works out

I routinely see guys asking $35-40 to ship a ratchet to me here in Nova Scotia, others charge me $3-15.Not that much difference in sizes of 3/8 ratchets. When I look at an item the first thing I do is check the shipping costs, any more than $15 and I keep going.I never bid without a shipping quote.

One word, Crook. I can't see the item costing that much to ship. I have seen similar things on ebay but usually the state what the shipping is or say Actual Shipping Costs. I have even seen some items for a penny and then the make up for it with the shipping. It reduces the fees they pay to put on line.

Thats a rediculous markup on shipping... this is the reason I love flat rate boxes. For the most part its $10.35 to ship.. I might charge $12 flat rate to cover the few mins it takes me to package and tape, etc. Even then I'm not "making" money on shipping.

Your seller either made a miscalculation or is trying to pad his bottom line or wasn't happy with the price the ratchet brought. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to contact him and ask him why the shipping is so high.

Apparently you haven't spent much time on ebay.
You might want to look here : http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-shipping.html
According to this..NO the seller CANNOT charge whatever he feels like. No way in hell would I pay that even if it did cost me my ebay account !

Not sure what the package weighs but a 10lb package from TX to Dillingham Alaska comes up as $29.95 for Priority Mail.

Mind you, if he is going by UPS Ground prices what he's charging may be correct. UPS charges a lot of money for delivery to Alaska and Hawaii. Since we shipped to most places via UPS Ground at my last place of work we refused shipment to both states in an effort to avoid issues like this.

You need to specifically ask how he's shipping it. On the auction page it shows UPS, but in his description he says he'll ship to APO addresses, so he must be willing to use USPS. I think USPS is your best bet.

My advice- keep the communication open and cordial, chances are it will get worked out.

BWP- did you see that he's now in Alaska, not WA?

Still don't see how it cost $60 shipping, but I know the USPS has been upping rates to remote areas (specifically alaska) so they don't lose as much money on each shipment.

Yeah, I used his zip code - 99576. Even 10 pounds is a high side. I can't really see that wrench going above 7-8 pounds.

We have UPS ground service to Alaska. Ok, it does really go by plane, but it's still "ground" service. Otherwise it's 2nd day air.

riley.m check out shiptoalaska.com

The guy will ship to WA and Ship to Alaska will get it to you, might be cheaper.

I ordered some blinds for the house and the company wanted $500 for shipping which was almost more than what the order cost. Ship to Alaska cost me just over $100.
