Electrical Help - Ceiling Fan Temp Safety Fuse

I recently had a ceiling fan act up on me. The fan itself worked fine, but the lights completely stopped working. I pulled it apart and after playing with it, removed a temp. safety fuse, or at least that's what my Google search says it's called. It's a Limitor T160, and has 130C stamped on it.

Once I bypassed it, the lights work. So do I need this fuse installed? If I do, where can I find a replacement? I might be able to call Hunter and see if they will send me one, as the fan is pretty new (but probably out of warranty). I can't find a place to buy one, but maybe I just don't know where to look.

I believe those are thermal fuses. I wouldn't bypass it as you've already demonstrated how hot those lights can get

They are :+1: Especially if you leave it running unattended. Don't want to hear of any fires now.

The easiest way to get them is only FleaBay. The last one I bought was under $2, shipping included. Check for the NTE8118 or NTE8125.

This type of thermal fuse has a very low rate of false failures. Replace it, but figure out the real problem if it blows again.

Were you using CFLs or regular incandescent bulbs? CFLs will put off less heat, but regardless, it's not worth the risk of burning the place down! If you disabled that safety feature, you're removing all liability from that company, and inviting trouble...

I'm pretty sure Hunter has a lifetime warranty on all their fans. If they can't send the part they will send you a new fan.

About 6 months back I had a problem with the light kit on a Hunter low end model ($60-$70ish). They sent me a new fan after a nice and productive conversation with their CS department. I had originally just requested a new light kit but it was no longer available so they sent me a whole new fan. A return shipping label was sent so the old fan could be returned to them on their dime. Real nice folks.

I appreciate the help guys.

I was using incandescents, since these new fans have the smaller light sockets.

I called Hunter, but only the motor has a lifetime warranty. They will send me the entire light assembly for $15 shipped, which is 1/2 price. I'm going to try to just replace the fuse, since I've already determined that to be the cause.

Luckily I bought two of these, and one was still in the box awaiting installation. I just swapped the light assembly, so it's not a big inconvenience for now.

FYI for anybody else landing here after the light on their ceiling fan stopped working: This little POS thermal fuse will blow when a light bulb blows!

Does hunter and the other posters of this thread really expect the owner to replace a fuse (connected by wire nuts on the inside of the cowl) every time a light bulb blows?!

I'll be bypassing this fuse thank you. That being said, now that I'm bypassing this sorry excuse of a fuse, it will be very important for me not to exceed the posted light bulb wattage.

My fuse also blown when one of the hot-element bulb blown. I can't believe Hunter still using these fuse in 2016. My next fan for sure will not be Hunter, and I will make sure my friends know what they will be buying if they are thinking of Hunter.
I bypassed the thermal fuse and use all energy saving bulbs instead.

What kind of hunter fan do you have. I have a new spare wiring harness from a Landry fan if somebody need one.

I believe the thermal fuse is there thanks to the government. It is to prevent the end user from consuming too much power (in the Department of Energy's opinion). I have two identical fans but made a couple of years apart, one has it, the other doesn't. You can tell because there is a slight delay on one before the lights come on.
