I am in the process of adding a subpanel for my garage I'm building. I would like to purchase a new 100a breaker for this old panel that is my main that I'm pull 100a off of, but I'm not sure what siemens breaker to buy. If I could get a little help in this area it would be appreciated. Or is there a place I can look to see what model it would be?

Are there any spaces left? That's a long panel for only those 4 spaces.
If there are empty spaces not pictured..
I would pull the cover and look at it, take a couple pictures or just pop a breaker out and head to home depot.

There should be a label on the inside of the cover.

Where are you going to put it?

Why 100a?

Considering you have a challenger and a Siemens breaker, I'd say you need more than a new breaker. I'd recommend an electrician

25 years ago on a house we had It had challenger and siemens breakers mixed as I recall. It was a 100A panel. Whether that was wrong IDK.

Lots of breakers fit in lots of panels but aren't rated for it.

Not a sparky, but AFAIK, they are not cross compatible. Could be wrong but it would be the first time ever...

Pull a breaker out and take it to the electrical store. Your service panel looks like it needs work, is it falling off the wall? In my state a sub panel has to have 4 wires to it. 2 hot wires(220), a neutral, and a ground. The neutral and ground have to have separate buse bars, code doesn’t allow the neutral and ground to use the same buse bars. According to the national electric code any panel after the main service panel has to have 4 wires. Having the neutral and ground separated doesn’t allow the neutral to be used as a ground. If you don’t know what you are doing call an electrician.

Pulling a breaker only tells you what could be stuffed in there not what is the right one

Pulling a breaker tells him what 220 breaker will fit the two main buse bars in the panel. A service panel has two hot bars in the middle, each one is 120 volts. He needs a 220 breaker that connects to both sides of the buse bars to feed 220 to the sub panel.

You are missing the problem.

Panels are rated for specific model breakers. What fits is not sufficient.

If it was me I would replace his service panel with a square D panel. Everyone has parts and breakers for square D.

If he has a seaman’s service panel he needs to buy a 220 breaker for a seaman’s service panel. It not rocket science!

Does he?

I see a challenger breaker and a Siemens breaker. One is right, one is wrong.

I bet it isn't a Siemens

If there's no visible label on the panel there might be with the cover off.

Those Siemens QP breakers have a lot of compatibility physically but if they are listed or not for those panels is another story.

That is Mike's point.......or any approved mfr with classified cb's.
I’ll bet square D makes a breaker that will fit in his seaman’s service panel. Probably lots of manufacturers make breakers that will fit his panel. Do you understand why I said to take a breaker out and take it to an electrical supply store???

OP, w/o better pics, no one knows.

Include a pic of the mfr's label (or what is left of it).

I'm not a mind reader, No. Wal-mart doesn't sell crystal balls (that work).

The parts jockey at the supply house is not always as well versed as one may hope for. First question to ask is who is the panel mfr.

From the picture I would advise he fix the service panel first. The local electrical inspector would jump three feet in the air without bending his knees after seeing the service panel.

Ok, ok, you guys have me laughing. I'm going to pull the panel apart this evening when I get home. I was just going to Lowes on the way home and wonder if anyone was able to tell me which model that panel was. I was not sure if there was any sticker that said what it was.
I didn't want to leave the house without water or A/C to take the breaker to the hardware store to figure out which breaker it was, but if it needs to be done so be it.
Why 100a.... why not? Its all I need in my garage.
Panel leans a bit, but will be fixed once I begin the work on it. There will be no city inspections on this project, just a licensed electrician over my shoulder the whole way.
The subpanels I buy are all Square D. Bought this house a few yrs ago and when I bought it the panel was leaning then. When the inspector saw it then he said it needed to be fixed. They put a screw in it and called it a day. That's why I say it will be fixed right when I'm adding a subpanel. It's while your in there kind of work. :) The whole area needs to be cleaned up and will get done. This is the first major project that I have been able to afford to do to this house. In the past history of this house it has been abused and not taken care of. My wife and I slowly fixing it up to where we like it to be.
I really appreciate the help and the comments. Thanks everyone.

incorrect way to go about it. code requires you to use listed breakers for that panel. merely pulling an existing breaker that could be the wrong breaker (not listed for that panel) is not the way to go about it. just because it fits doesnt mean its correct.

need to read the panel label or if missing look at the main breaker...

lots of manufacturers DO NOT make classified breakers for other panels. you are incorrect.... bringing a breaker to a supply counter person will not net you the correct breaker. it will net you a breaker of the same brand you have in your hand. the supply counter people wont know what panel you have or what is listed to go into it..... again completely wrong way to go about this...

The form factor of the cb is already figured out.........if a Siemens QP is in there now, another siemens will fit, as will a SQ D Homeline, EatonBR, Challeger, Zinsco, Bryant, Murray, etc.

Need the panel mfr info first to do it correctly.

Take a pic of the entire panel with the door open, a pic of the main breaker close up, and a pic of the entire panel with the deadfront removed (if you feel comfortable).

Sq D breakers are not UL classified to be used in ANY competitive make of panel.

Square D makes breakers that are listed for Square D panels and nothing else. Eaton and Connecticut Electric are the two companies I know of that make classified breakers to fit oddball panels.

I'd throw a Siemens QP2100 in it and be done.

Above all I want to do this correctly and safe. I am a person that wants to replace parts with what the manufacture requires. This is electricity and my family's safety is important. If the well pump breaker is not the correct breaker for this panel it will be replaced.
I will pull the panel cover and get some good pics for everyone to see. I can do this work, but I want it up to code this is why I hired an electrician to watch and approve everything I'm doing.
I'm ready for lots more question and comments..... let them rip!:p

Is seagrams pushing it?

As others have said, install a better panel (SQ D makes the Toyota/Lexus of panels and products with their Homeline/QO), run some new wire for your garage, power your garage as needed. If you want to keep cost down, you can go with a smaller breaker and wire. What will you be powering in your garage?

At the very least, that box is very crusty and needing to be cleaned. If you don't want to replace the panel, can you steal the spot the pump is in for your garage breaker and then run the pump off the garage sub-panel? Then you're only having to do rewiring on the pump instead of the whole panel.

but will you really need 100a? you'll need at minimum (depending on distance) #1 AL or #3 CU. If you step it down to 90a you could go with #2 AL and save some money using MHF.

what will you be running in there? how many people at the same time? this will play a big factor in required feeder size

So those are the only spaces in there? Those two double poles?

Where will the new breaker go to feed the sub panel?

I've used them a number of years ago as well but that doesn't change the fact that SQD doesn't make a listed breaker for other brands even though a Homeline would fit in this situation.

100a is a decent amount more expensive than 90a. Also more than 60a and 60a will do nearly all single person shops

I wanted 100a for expansion to another building but for now I will be adding a hot tub to the garage panel.
Here are the pictures as promised.
