That looks right now. Hot lead should be on black common of 3 way.

One note, when wrapping wire around a screw, always loop it in a way that tightening the screw tends to close the loop, as opposed to open.

Also, not to be nit-picky, but as a future reference and I realize the old ones don’t have them, the ground screws are required to be used when retrofitting switches when there is a ground wire present inside the box.

Gosh that was a cluster **** of wiring! It makes sense now why it didnt work without the fixture!

Ok myself I don't think a did anything different than way it was other than the back stabbing. What's different? I looked at pics and I thought I saw 2 hots on the 3 way so I freaked out.

One other question I'm working on my house too and hooking up some outlets in the garage by my sink.

One to left is a existing GFCI and want few more outlets. Here's my box opened.

If I can I would like to have 3 more outlets (but 1 more on other side of sink would work ) on this and want them all tied to the GFCI. What's the best way to add them? Do I connect off the outlet cause there looks to be other set of holes to add wire or do I tie in at wire nuts?

Run a tail off the load side of gfi and wire nut the old wire and the new wire to it
Edit, I see you have tails already so just wire nut them in,will prob need bigger nuts though

And thank you all for the help. I can usually do wiring myself. Many times I open a box and sit there and trying to figure out "what are they trying to accomplish" with this. I have no diagram and work is done by a electrician 25+ years. It all accomplishes same task but different methods.

I still don't know why exactly why having dining room fixture install cause a light powered upstream not to work properly?

In this picture it looks as though the black wire directly behind the other black wire under the wire nut has had an overheating issue. The insulation looks melted

Interesting? They where heavy gauge wire as can tell from the neutrals. I didn't notice a issue with wire when working with them.

Don't think it's melted, prob just got smashed into back of box,usually when something is overheated you see it on the ends more,not in the middle of the wire

Very true it's a shallow box probably switch it out for deeper one
