I could find some use for an electromagnet in my toolbox. There are times that I need to clean up shavings, and using a regular magnet is a hassle to constantly clean off.
Any advice?

A steel bar, 20 feet or so of 16 gauge wire and a 12 volt battery.
Vacuum cleaner.
I would think metal shavings may ruin a vacuum eventually.
I may be wrong.
How does it work?
Stick a regular magnet in a plastic bag. When you need to clean off the magnet, pull off the bag.
Put the magnet in the finger of a rubber glove, pick up shavings, remove magnet from inside glove, shavings fall off. You'll have to upgrade the idea from this. We use shop vacs for shavings every day at work, but they are devoted to this. They have the 2-1/2" hoses.
