If I do something like that I make sure it doesn't miss the intent. There is a good reason for most of the rules.
Was the comment directed toward the OP or @Zippercat and me or both?

As far as drilling screw holes for mounting, I could see where it could be an issue. If the screw head rub on wires, but that could be the same thing with existing mounting holes.

Unless it's listed for field modification, modifying it makes it unlisted.
I can see according to letter of the law creating a mounting hole would be modifying it. My question is were do you find state if it is field modification or not. I have seen electrician use a punch and make a hole in metal box for conduit. I guess that would be an example of being listed for field modification.

Bottom line, I am not worried, I am using flat head screws to hold my boxes. Just like most of my questions on here are about education.

As a guess the existing holes are usually in metal boxes, using a metal screw it would still be grounded. There is probably other reasoning around it?
