Your model 600 K-D valve spring compressor appears to be held together with two cotter pins, if I am seeing things correctly.
The unit shown on Alloy-Artifacts appears to be held together with two "wing screws".
The one I picked up yesterday is held together with two very mangled cotter pins.
Which begs the question: Alteration by previous owner? Production change?
I'll bet there are more than two copies of this one among the membership. Curious as to what the others look like.

There are several examples on the K-D thread. I would say that the cotter pins were original but many have been replaced.

^ The photograph image and the drawing in the 1950 ad look like "wing screw" to me.

I'll have to find some new cotter pins for this one after it's done soaking... I think this batch of Evaporust is getting tired- it might take a few days, but I'll be gone, so no big thing.

Don, although they're all K-D model number 600, you're looking at two different tools. The one with cotter (split) pin are fixed jaws and the one with the wing screw allows you to adjust the width of the jaw.

@d42jeep - your CF-11 Snap-on valve spring compressor looks awfully familiar.... like exactly the same as a CF-11 Indestro. Most likely also made by Clark Feather.
Curiously, that patent (RE19414) is shown at datamp.org as "Not known to have been produced."
It seems rather odd that 1879330 would have the same "Not known to have been produced" notation when that patent was the subject of an infringement suit against Waterloo.

Oh boy, this tool brings back memories. Back when I worked at a marina in the 70s/80s I used that tool along with some 1/4" rope to change out the broken valve springs on a bunch of Mercruiser 470/485 motors. If you were lucky you did just the springs, if not you had to pull the head because the valve hit the piston. Good times.
