what are you using. I am going to start on another engine and would like to have a good engine stand to build it on. I am thinking of getting the 2000lb model from harbor freight. I figure overkill is better than to small. I have a 3 wheeled 750lb stand and it was scary with a 302 long block on it.

I built a GM 6.5 diesel on the HF 1000 lb model. It performed well, the dressed weight of the 6.5 is around 900 lbs. I'd expect the 2000 lb model to be even better.

I stopped using an engine stand quite a few years ago. I had one of my motors on my stand when I had a rush job for a customer. I stuck four longish bolts in the holes for the bellhousing bolts and stood the block up on them on my motorcycle lift. I liked that setup so much that I sold the engine stand and never looked back. I use the motorcycle lift all the time (sometimes even for motorcycles) and I had only been using the engine stand 4 or 5 times a year.

I use the HF 1000 lb, the 2000 lb takes up too much space. I also have a much smaller engine cradle that puts the motor almost on the floor.

I own a harbor frieght style 4 wheel engine stand . It works well , is easy to take apart for storage since the front leg unbolts . When using it its easier to put block plate on the engine then pick it up with a crane or a buddy and place on stand .

Ive owned this stand for 20 some odd years . the only 3 complaints I have are

1 The front casters are swivel and are constanly needing replaced due to the ball bearings coming out .

2 The hideous finish and color .

3 When changing the position if the engine the pin you remove and have to reinstall is kind of a pain . I welded a 1/2 coarse thread bolt to the 12 oclock postion of the engine stand head . When I want to rotate the engine I loosen bolt and rotate and retighten .

. I also welded 4 3/8 coarse thread nuts to the leg as well to hold the block bolts when not in use .

Also works to hold a diff for ring and pinion replacement if you make a bracket for it

Overall for a weekend warrior this stand will serve you well . Mine has built many big block and small block chevys .
