Original application is not for shaping metal but rather rolling/working the dents out of the fenders of early cars like 10s to 30s
Mostly for the cars that get the little fender dents from the inside from rocks thrown up from the tires

I've found 3 different names Stiles and 1 Herman, 2 Barrett, 3 Medart they have been sold under. Know they go back to at least 1919, Barrett is also well known for brake machines.
I'll attach some info, 3 main sizes, but a 4th is just a little different but unless they are next to each other hard to tell. I have more info just trying to put a history together. I thought I had one of each of the tools but surprise! I'll post pics when it gets here!
Use is for fender repair, you would rough out the damage and this would be your smoothing / plannishing, If you haven't tried one you don't have the respect for the repairman in the day! If you do use one, I think you will find
one they work, two it isn't easy! three I've never hurt there before!

Also have found the incorporation papers from 1928 online listing the 3 share holders. Still more to dig up. I happened to be searching Stiles and Medart and found this thread, missed it before. tt;)

I have one of those that I picked up thirty years ago. I think it is the long size. It springs before it applies much pressure, so it is more for smoothing than shaping.
