I have good news and bad news. The bad news is...no new stores. The good news is we are continuing our test in Lowe's. I am pretty sure we are the only epoxy type test product they kept.

To anyone else looking to buy some epoxy-coat with regards to concerns of UV exposure.

I was unaware of this but epoxy-coat offers/sells a UV protection additive for $22 for a full sized (2-car garage floor) kit.

Christine recommended I add this to my base kit, and also another to the clear kit going over the base.

My floor faces south and I have the door open a lot so I thought it was a good idea.

Not sure though how it compares to a completely different clear top coating with better UV resistance to begin with.

Just thought I'd post this b/c I hadn't heard about it.

Re: Top coating

Christine,

First let me say how impressed I am with your tech support (and patience!) on this forum -- just awesome! I've been looking at several suppliers, and have now decided to buy Epoxy-Coat because of your support here. You can tell the boss I said that -- and you deserve a raise!

Question about top coating: I don't plan to do any flake (appearance isn't critical to me, I just want a durable, easy to clean surface -- and flake would just make it harder to find small parts that I constantly drop on the floor). I don't have much UV exposure, just two small windows that face south, shaded by trees in summer -- and of course the patch of sunlight moves across the floor. The floor is new (actually poured 18 mo ago, but never used -- new house) so it has no stains, no previous coatings, no nothing -- just "virgin" concrete. I plan to etch, of course, but no need to do any oil removal or crack filling. Usage: home auto repair shop, no welding, all mechanical work, engine rebuilds, brake work, etc. It will not be a showcase -- it will be a working shop. My main concern is chemical resistance, if I happen to spill brake fluid, brake cleaner, or carb cleaner.

So, my questions are:

1) Do you recommend a top coat? Which type, the standard clear, or the polyurea you mentioned in an earlier post? What's the advantage of polyurea over standard clear?

2) What's the advantage of a clear top coat, over just doing a second coat of the base color epoxy?

3) Does it make any sense to do a second coat of base color epoxy? Or, if I wanted to get 20 mil thickness, should I just buy two kits and lay it down thicker? (I'm guessing that the epoxy will cure regardless of thickness, since it's not a solvent evaporation process).

I plan on calling & then driving to Scranton or Wilkes Barre to buy the kit(s) this week. THANKS for all your support!

Call me at the office, lots to discuss. There are alot of variables on why you may or may not want a clear coat or a second coat.

Been lurking, and decided to register so I could ask - do you have any stores in or near Memphis, TN? This would include Southaven or Olive Branch, MS.

Thanks!

I jut bought a new house and close in a month. I've been researching epoxy flooring products for about 3 weeks now. I had it narrowed down to epoxy coat or amor garage. Both seemed about the same price and had similar products.

I just read all 31 pages of this thread and I will be buying epoxy coat because of Christine's presence on this forum. It's nice to see some support on a product.

The nearest lowes that stocks the product is 90 miles away but if I can save $50/kit vs special ordering from my local lowes, I will just have to do that.

I'm looking at a full kit and a half kit with top coat for my 700+sf garage. I will be calling Christine on Monday to get details on how to get the non local store to order what I want.

Can't wait to get this on my floor!!!

Rugerlady, Cobra6, thank you both. Bought the last gray kit just now. Just a note, they don't keep it in the epoxy section. I never would have found it without help. The salesperson indicated it was VERY popular.

Looking forward to using it.

Even if my store doesn't stock it they should be able to order it for me?

Thanks.

I only see (1) review for Epoxy Coat on the Lowe's website? With all of the information on here why no feedback on the Lowes website? IT IS FREE TO JOIN LOWE'S. If anyone on here has installed Epoxy Coat with success it can help people like myself and others make a honest purchase. Upload your picture to the Lowe's site also!

Lowe's refunded all of our H&C purchases today so we are being respectful and going to only say H&C stain products did not work on our concrete floor even after correct cleaning as MFG instructed.

I have been debating the whole epoxy thing for a few weeks now. Been looking at all the brands and options out there and it is overload of all that claim this and that. All the bad reviews of some and good reviews of the same product.

Going to give Epoxy-Coat a shot this weekend, that is if the store has any in stock. I think the Alabaster, AL store is the closest store on the last list I seen that carried the product in store?

What is the warranty?

Found two stores that say they carry it so far. They are about 1 1/2 hours away from me. Both stores only have Taupe in stock.... want gray.... lol

you can just email it to me. [email protected]

Just fill it out and scan it and send it it?

Also throwing this out there. I looked for gray at all the Lowes in Birmingham with no luck. So ended up buying taupe color. Still matched my beige and black building just fine.

Got the product home and no 9" roller and the etcher was leaking a bit in the bucket like I said. So picked up a roller and some fresh etcher.

Also the big problem... could have been big problems for some people. The epoxy was not taupe like I thought.... it was gray in a taupe kit... lol. Would have been pissed to drive 80 miles one way to find out the kit I picked up was mixed up inside once I got it home.

So I ended up with gray like I wanted... surprise! And taupe earth tone flakes... lol....

Would have been really mad if I was set on taupe and got gray...

Plus... the measuring stick for single batch cover 10x12 which is 120 sq feet. The kit in total is supposed to cover 500 sq ft. My shop is 18x20 which is 360 sq feet. So three batches would cover my garage no problem with a lot left over (140 sq ft) of epoxy.

So what I did was divided my garage in four squares of 90 sq ft. Pretty easy to do with it being a metal building with 5 feet apart studs down the side and eve up top. My math say that I should get four batches from the kit at single batch (120 sq ft) equal to 480 sq ft with 20 sq ft to spare as left over with full kit to cover 500 sq ft.

Guess what... the fourth batch to finish up at the door was barley short (1/4") on the stick... close... but short a tad. No way it it would have had 20 sq more ft... lol.. didn't have 480 sq ft... so I hope it works out and sticks. Not much could have been done at this point of the job and one kit and the closest kit 80 miles away there and back. Plus taupe is the only kits there.... lol

Epoxy was fairly easy to install and looks good so far. I have been waiting on it to dry a bit before checking it out further. Will post pictures soon of the finshed product. Hope it last and works out better than my first impression of the kit.

Our Taupe is a creamy Gray color. The color Taupe is a very vague term. If it came with the Beige blend of flakes, it was Taupe and not Gray. I'm not sure why your last batch was short, as long as it is dried, it will stick without any issues. Not sure why your first impression was so bad....

Not saying the product is a bad product or anything. Was just give what I encounter with the product.

Will have to post some pictures of the floor... looks pretty gray... lol... no big deal like I said, I wanted grey to be honest and couldn't find it here local.

I also got the warranty card scanned and the receipt from Lowes scanned and will be sending it by email shortly.

Thanks.

I was bummed today that Christine wasn't in, and unfortunately the lady that did answer the phone was rather blunt and not in the mood for a "will this product work on my concrete floor that has an Ardex Feather Finish on it" discussion. Her answer was no (which is okay), but I'm not sure I buy it, or if she just wanted to get me off of the phone?!

I'd wait for Christine. She's great to deal with.

As you notice no one from Epoxy-Coat has responded this week on the forum due to Christine being on vacation.

Christine is the one that will assist with any questions or others issues.

I have been exchanging e-mails with Jenny at epoxy-coat this past week. She provided very timely responses, and addressed all of my questions each time.

Just ordered custom colored JOHN DEERE GREEN Epoxy-Coat with clear topcoat for a 2.5 car garage. Will make a new post with pictures of beginning to end results. Hopefully I will not make any mistakes so others can use it for a guide.

Christine took our order this morning and was nice and they come. Watch out Epoxy-Coat I may hire her.

Regarding timing the second clear top coat application Over the bottom base coat -

Which ideally should be done 18 hrs apart, what time have you guys decided to do the applications? I know ideally for the concrete conditions the base coat should be done when dew point and temp are spread apart - low humidity and warm, and when temps are falling vs. rising for possible outgassing. That puts me doing the base coat in the mid afternoon and the clear coat in the wee hours the following morning. Ugh. Anyone else do it another way?

I'm starting my process on Thursday afternoon with prep. Friday starting at 4-5pm, Im doing the base, and then Saturday around noon I will do the top coat.

I know the top coat application time isn't the best but gotta get it done before it starts warming up to much. I don't think the time is too critical as long as its around the 18 hr mark and before the 24 hr mark. Just test a fingerprint in a corner to see if it's hard enough to walk on.....

You can do the topcoat later on but you have to lightly sand the basecoat.

The review on the red Epoxy-Coat was mine. Since that review I have installed an Atlas 9k 4 post lift using a skid loader and floor jacks. Pushing the 800lb runway across the floor unknowingly dragging some cr6 under it caused only minor scratches. I was truly surprised how hard the Epoxy-coat is. I have one more floor to do and it definitely will be Epoxy-Coat.

Awesome! Since last week another 3 Lowe's feedback were left for Epoxy-Coat or were released from the Lowe's IT group. I know I have left 3 professional feedbacks on products we purchased in the past 3 months and they have not been released yet.
