I'm too tired to respond to everyone but here is the recap from today.

I got to the site early and started measuring. There is a total of 48 anchor bolts in patterns of 2 or 4 bolts. I found only one 4 bolt plate to be in the proper location, all of the other 44 bolts were in the WRONG location. The PM showed up and I told him what I found and a few minutes later the concrete crew showed up. We broke out the prints and measured everything to confirm that only 4 of the 48 bolts were in the right place. An hour later and all the bolts were were they should be. That's when I said that I wanted to shoot the bolt heights. Without complaint they broke out the laser and all was goo except for one corner that was off by 1/2". they put a grade nail in the form and painted it. I will be on site tomorrow to watch it all happen.

I used a 2" electrical conduit for a chase to run my 1" water line in. I put in a 4" waste and 2" vent 1/4" below the finished floor height for a future bathroom after the inspector approved the footings.

I need to get up a zero dark thirty tomorrow and got to HD as soon as they open and get some 2" couplings for the electrical conduit and install the pipe in the foundation before the concrete trucks start rolling. I personally ran out of steam tonight and just didn't have it in me to make a 30 mile round trip to HD.

So here is how today went.
I was out the door at 0530 to be at HD at 0600 when they opened. I picked up four 2" couplings and made it back to the Grove before 0700. I glued all the 2" stuff up, dug the trench, and got it all in place by 0715. Then I realized that I never put in the 1" conduit for the data line.

More glueing and more digging and I had the 1" line in. Craig texted me reminding me to spray my nuts with WD (thanks Craig, I would have forgotten). 5 minutes after I got my nuts good and wet, I got a call from Jerry saying that the pour was not going to happen today. I jumped in the truck and made it to the day job for a full day of fun.

The concrete placement has been re-scheduled for first thing tomorrow morning. I told the day job I won't be in tomorrow. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how things shake out in the AM.

On a good note, the framers got the roof on the house today. That's a milestone and I have to write another check. They are making good progress and I hope it continues.

I couldn't agree more. Our original shingle roof was red with black specks. The new shingle is white with back specks. The temperature difference is AMAZING!

The Little bitty garage is Laura's and she can do whatever she wants with it as long as she leaves room for the motorcycle.

WE HAVE CONCRETE!

I got a call at 6am from the PM saying they were going to start at first light. I got there at 7:00 and the pump truck was set up and the first mixer was backing in.

They poured all of the footings and then the 2 piers for the front two columns. The piers were supposed to be 2" taller than the front apron but they pitched the apron down 1-1/2" so the piers were 3-1/2" taller to account for the pitch.

This concrete crew was quite diverse and for those with keen eyes will see what I mean. After the footings and piers were placed, the main shop floor was done and floated. After about an hour and a half they marked and trowed in the overhead door openings. Then the front apron got poured and the front of the shop floor form was stripped and they finished placing the apron.

The Apron got a very fine broom finish and the shop floor got burned in. You can actually see my trucks reflection in the dry concrete finish. I don't have running water on site but I think I'm about 20 minutes away from the daily rain so that should slow the cure a little bit.

They will be back tomorrow to saw cut the reliefs. Thew crew was told that this job was 50+ yards but it turned out to be 70+ yards. Things might get a bit interesting when it comes time to write the check. They had the drawings, they gave me a quote that I accepted, we'll see what happens.

All in all I'm happy with the job they did. I'm going to give it a good 7 days before I start setting steel. I use the waiting time to install the septic system for the house.

So after work today I stopped at the grove to check things out.

The concrete guys had come and cut saw cut the reliefs in the slab and it looked like they brought in a load of fill and graded the outside of the slab. I was not expecting that.

The framing crew finished all of the outstanding items on the house and the framing inspection is scheduled for tomorrow.

Laura and I don't watch TV but figured we better make accommodations for a TV in our house. What we decided to do was to make a recess above the fireplace to accommodate a big TV. The TV will be covered by either a piece of art or a framed world map. The framed piece will be on hanger door type hinges that will lift the framed piece out and above the recessed TV.

I ordered 3 loads of dirt for tomorrow. One will be for where I relocate my current RV (living quarters) to, and the other 2 loads will be in support of the septic system that I need to get installed while I'm waiting for the shop slap to cure.

Beat me to it. I was going to ask if there was framing behind OSB. Can't count how many times I've had to open a wall at the finish stages to install blocking for the TV bracket.

The shop foundation was poured last Wednesday and I am giving it a full 7 days before I drive a machine on it. Today I started shaking out the steel, and I have all the columns laying in their respective locations. I won't bring the rafter beams up on the slap until I can drive on it.

Tomorrow I will check the height on all the column locations now the the slab has had a few days cure time. I don't have a laser level but I do have a telescope transit. I need to make a bracket to hold my grade stick plumb while I sight the elevations as I am working on this job solo.

I also leveled as spot behind the house where I will move my RV to as soon as I get electric service. The inspector already approved my underground piping to the meter base and the electric co-op has released my service order to the construction division so I am hoping that I get service connected sometime this week.

Now that I have concrete and have started moving steel from the pile, I guess my shop is officially under construction.

You're 100% right Don, take Shorty's advice and point the Vette east.


Mondays are a day off for me so here's how it went.

I broke out the transit and got elevations on all of the column locations at the anchor bolts now that the slab has 5 days of cure time. The prints called for +/- 1/8". Out of the 8 column locations 6 were dead nuts, one was + 1/16" and the other was - 1/16". I was pretty damn happy considering that the front 20' of the slab is 2" lower than the rest of the slab and they gave it a 1-1/2" downward pitch and had to frame piers for the column locations to bring them up to the same elevation as the others.

I chased all the threads on the anchor bolts, and worked on a game plan for raising iron with the equipment I have on hand.

So what could be better than a good concrete foundation and a plan to hang iron?

I got electricity today! Woo Freakin Hoo. The guys from the electric co-op came out and after thoroughly busting my balls for 20 minutes about having to pull big wire through 225' of under ground conduit, they got to work. 30 minutes later the cable was pulled, connected to the x-former on the pole, the meter was plugged in, and I got sparktricity at the Grove.

I will install a 30amp RV receptacle in the next few days and I will move to the Grove before the weekend.

As for the house:

They put the hurricane ties in between saturday and today. It was just one guy working alone. He drilled holes in the sole and top plates and then drilled into the concrete slab. A 12' long 3/8 threaded rod gets epoxied into the slab, a nut and washer hold down the sole plate and the rod extends all the way up through the top plate with another nut and washer to hold the top. This was done on 48" centers on all exterior and interior walls.

HVAC rough in tomorrow, plumbing rough in Wednesday and Thursday, and electrical rough in starts on Friday. Doors and windows are also scheduled for this week. We are moving right along at a good clip.

There will be a camp out at the Grove this weekend with beer, that's a given. I doubt there will a bonfire.

I couldn't fathom building in hurricane country without a whole house generator on an automatic switch with buried propane tanks.

I have, and will always have a 10K or better welder/ generator for power supply. The electricians are putting in a plug in and manual transfer switch to run the house from my welder.
