Thanks to all for all the well wishes on the clan expansion, this is just the beginning.

I got back to the Grove early this afternoon but I spent too much time BS'ing with the PM and the subs. They finished all the insulation today, and the painters finished all the caulking and plan on having color on the house by the end of the week.
Drywall gets delivered tomorrow and they start hanging it on Wednesday.

While I was gone they installed the well pump and we now have running water at the Grove.

I finally did get to work on the shop late this afternoon and got 3 columns up and a few more girts installed. That's when I realized that I Effed up. I installed the wrong rafters on the wrong columns.

Craig mentioned the tabs on the bottom of the rafters a few pages back and mistakenly thought they were the tase for the rafter ties. They were in fact the ties for the columns on the overhead doors. When I realized my mistake tonight I was disgusted.

The fix is to either move the rafters ( I'm not going to do that now that I have half the building assembled), or cut the tabs of the wrong rafters and weld them on to the right rafters. I have 2 scissor lifts getting delivered, so I will wait until I have a lift and then I will cut the tabs off and re-weld them were they need to be.

i still have plenty of work to keep me busy so I will keep plugging along.

Here's todays update.
Yesterday I ordered 2 scissor lifts from the green rental company. I really like the folks at the local store and they have come to know who I am. I use the phone app to reserve equipment as it always gives me a better rate than if I walked in the door at the store. When I reserved the scissor lifts the app would not let me select my local store for pick up. I called the local store # but it sent me to the Jax store. I told the guy I wanted a RT lift for a week delivered on Friday and an electric scissor lift for a month delivered today, I gave him my CC and all was good to go.

This morning I get a call from the green rental place about the RT lift for Friday and they wanted me to confirm. I asked about the electric lift for delivery today and the guy had no record of my order, he said he would look into it and call me back. I didn't hear back from him by lunch so I drove over to my local store and expand the situation. As usual they took good care of me and assured me that I would have a lift on site by the time I got home at 5:30 pm.

At 4:45 I get a call from the driver telling me that he got his truck stuck on my build site and asked if the keys were in my skid steer. I had the only key and I told him I could be there in 15 minutes to pull him out. On the way home I get a call from the Jax store telling me that they can't get me an electric lift today but they can get me one on Friday, I told her that the lift had already been delivered and the driver was stuck and I was on my way to pull him out. She told me that I must be mistaken as she had no record of my rental. When I got home and pulled the drivers truck out of the sand, we unloaded the lift and I sent the Jax store a picture of the lift and said thanks for nothing.

After I got the truck pulled out of the sand, I noticed that the whole house had been painted today. Laura and I spent much time in the selection of the color. We picked a color called "Elusive Green" that was almost a sage green with a hint of blue in it. As far as I could see the house looked Grey. I thought this was not good and Laura was going to hate it. I face timed Laura and showed her the house, she was elated and really liked the color ( I was relieved). I also found that every room in the house had a stack of drywall in it. Tomorrow they start hanging drywall.

I forgot to mention that I used the lift to install 2 more girts and the header for one of the over head doors. I to sure beats the hell out of going up and down the ladder a bunch of times. I might only need to take one Alieve tonight instead of two.

I didn't get any pictures, I'll get some tomorrow.

Mac, I really like the size of the house. I don't know when it started but the size of my dream house got smaller and smaller as my age got larger and larger. It has gone from 5,000 square feet to 1,600 square feet with a similar down-sized garage, from 5-car to 3-car.

Bob,
Laura and I have been through many iterations of this house and without pulling out the plans and looking for hard numbers I think our final plan was 1600 and small change of living space. This is going to be our forever home and there are no stairs and everything is ADA compliant. The master shower has no thresholds or doors. They call it a sports shower and while it very well may be for several years, eventually it will be an old man's shower and that is why we plan ahead.

The shop however, will be almost 800 sq/ft larger than the house. Having a larger shop than a house is something that I will not give up easily. Everyone says that we should build with re-sale value in mind. Screw that. We're building what we want and the kids can deal with re-sale value after we're gone.

I might be escaping from my dream shop, but we're building my dream home and it's called Honu Grove.

The house color looks good.

The 10 acre property I sold in WA had about 900sf of house and 3,600sf of shop/garage. The 25x25 steel building I have here isn't going to cut it.

Bob, it’s amazing how much wiser we get with each birthday. Somehow with new house, I managed to get a house to shop ratio of 1:1.

Mack, what do we need to bring in the way of tools? I’ve got the cooler, folding chaise and umbrella loaded.

Shorty, Mac and I have a plan, we plan on you and Gerard being up in the lifts, we’ll shut the master switch off so you have to stay up there and work.

Now, whether you and Gerard are in same lift or not remains to be figuired out.:lol_hitti

Oh, bring a hose long enough to reach portolet, can’t waste time going up and down.:lol_hitti

It only required a small payment to bring it current and name me as the beneficiary, I got you covered G.
Don't worry about a thing when you're in the man lift with Shorty.

Yep, Shorty is an expert with lifts, and the battery is in the base, not the platform, so your good :lol_hitti

Hi Mack
Just catching up with the build.
When I was putting up my big garage I rented a lift. Before I had finished with it I negotiated a sale price for the lift. It was almost the same price as my rental bill for a couple of weeks.
I mention this because it has become one of my go to tools when working in the big garage. It is sooo handy to drive to the spot that needs attention rather than dragging a ladder to the spot and climbing up and down and trying to lift a sign or light or something else while climbing that damn ladder.

Hi Mac, I've been quietly following along on your adventure. Things are progressing nicely. Your house is looking good, I like the fact that it's all one level, the size of it and how it's set up for aging in place.
Can I ask the brand and color names of the paint you used, both the body and trim colors? I am about to paint my garage and really like those colors.
Thanks and keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to progress on the shop.

OK loading truck.

Got the fix up kit for when someone drives a screw through fingers or slices on sheet metal.

Hi Mack

When I was putting up my big garage I rented a lift.

Don,
I have been bidding on used scissor lifts on eBay for a while now, sooner or later I'll find a good deal and buy one. A one month rental was $730 and I needed it now so that's the route I took for now.

Thanks for following along Jay. The paint is a Sherwin Williams exterior latex and the color is "Elusive Green".

I got home from work today to find that the rough terrain lift had been delivered as promised.
The painters were back on site and got most of the trim painted white.

The drywallers got all of the ceilings hung along with half the walls in the master BR and master bath. I haven't met them yet but the PM tells me it's another husband/wife team.

I got a little over 5#s of pork **** going low and slow. I got 2 coolers filled with ice and plenty of water. I still have to make some cole slaw for the pulled pork tonight.

Tomorrow's event should be memorable.

What an amazing freaking weekend. My mind is a raging torrent, rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of "What just effin happened".

DAY1

Gerrard was the first to arrive and he quickly became the go to guy on the electric man lift.
(A little side note here. Sunbelt had the equipment I rented on site, on time. Unfortunately both man lifts had seen better days and had quirks that needed to be navigated in order to make them work) .

Gerrard figured all the quirks on the electric lift and made it do what he wanted.

A short time later, Shorty, Toolfool, and Shorty's friend Ed showed up. Shorty was the only one wearing flip flops and immediately advised us all that WE were wearing inappropriate footwear for the project at hand.

Craig arrived after Shorty and crew and we all went to work. By the end of the day, the big pile of red iron that was on the ground was now in the air. No one got hurt and the only damage done was to a girt bracket by me not paying attention while running the skid steer.

At the end of the day we realized that we had 3 purlins bolted up in the wrong position, it was getting dark and we called it a day.

DAY2

Craig arrives at 8:30 and we correct the mis-bolted purlins from Saturday.
I finished cutting off the tabs from the rafters that I put in the wrong place and welded them on to the rafters where they should have been if I had been paying closer attention to the prints.

Craig was instaling all the cable braces and splicing the eye bolts on to the ends of the cables. Once that was done we adjusted the cable braces to bring all the columns plumb. Then we started to adjust the cable braces in the overhead to bring the building into square. This was a nightmare. every time we measured a diagonal we were off by several inches. After many ups and downs on the lifts, Craig and I realized we were not taking the measurement from the same place on each corner. Once we figured that out and re-measured the diagonals, we were 1/4" off over 40' and called it good. Craig saddled up and headed for home. I started putting in the base angle for screwing the tin to the foundation when the rain started. I called it quits at 5:30 and hit the rain locker for a much needed shower.

Tomorrow is my day off from work so I'll give it another good shot and see if I can get some tin on the building.

I can't begin to express my thanks to the Florida crew. My wife Laura said "Those guys are effin awesome"

Mac, one more piece of advise, I'd cut that damn bar out on the electric lift, it's got to be a sight to see us fat guys going under it like we're doing the limbo.:lol_hitti

Glad we could help to get you to this spot.

I'm glad y'all got by without expert guidance. I'll try to make sure I'm there next time. [emoji16] I did notice that Shorty changed his shoes at some point and put on his Orange safety officer hat.

It seems that with the contractors on the house and the FC crew on the shop you're making great progress.
