Got a slow leaking evap coil. Found my replacement coil, and they come cased and uncased. Can I buy the uncased and just swap them out? Or is that for a different application?

I'm comfortable evacing and recharging. I just haven't touched a residential system before.

Would uncase be exact fit, slide out then slide in? Uncase usually set inside furnace while other sets on top furnace. I don’t know if both are same size plus cabinet. It’s been years since doing any residential myself

If you're capable of installing the new coil into your existing sheet metal plenum (case) then just purchase the uncased. However, if your existing plenum is not exactly the correct size for the new coil, and you're not setup for making a new plenum from scratch (or changing the size of you're existing plenum) then buy the cased coil and install the entire thing as a new unit.

Cased coil fits a certain size foot print furnace. Bare coil might need to be retrofitted. Might also add a expansion valve. If it uses a orifice might have orifice size problem.
Armstrong Air® Evaporator Coil, Series: EU1P-1, 3 ton Nominal Capacity, Upflow/Downflow, R-22/R-410A, 3/8 in Liquid Line, 3/4 in Suction Line, Uncased, 23-1/8 in H x 15-1/2 in W x 19-1/2 in D
Fits a standard 17.5" width furnace

The uncased isn't necessarily the same as the cased minus the case. The cased might not even be exactly the same but if the height of the case is the same you can often use the doors that come with the new cased coil on the old case.

That's what I was thinking, slide the old out and slide the new in since I've already got the plenum.

I have the cased part number currently installed. I was able to match up the uncased part number as an identical coil minus the sheet metal as far as I can tell.

How wide is the furnace? You don't want a 17.5" coil on a 22" wide furnace. It he siize hole on the bottom side would be to small for the heating side.

17.5". The cased coil in the first post is what's currently installed.

Heard back today, initial cost was $1500 to replace the coil, but it's a little unclear what that all entails. Owner is supposed to call later with details.

Of course they also tossed out $5500 for a whole new system, but everything else is really still in good shape.

I can get the nitrogen and 410a for free, and I'm having a contractor buddy price out my coil and a filter at his price.
