EvapoRust works by chelation. There is a finite amount of chemistry in the solution that will react with a fixed amount of iron oxide. Once the stuff is used up that's it.

Also to answer someone else's question, Tractor Supply sells a gallon for ~$20.

When I pull my stuff out of the evaporust I dunk them in a bucket of water, then dry with a towel, and finally spray some WD-40 to keep from rusting until I do whatever final cleanup needs to be done.

To answer someone's question about items too large. I've done bits on a toolbox before, I soaked some bits of paper towel in evaporust, layed them over the rusted areas, then covered that with a regular towel to prevent it from drying out. Works great, it won't remove paint unless the metal underneath become compromised, then you can get bubbling.

Anybody ever try or have an idea if evapo-rust would be effective to remove a couple small rust spots on a large tool box, or is it only effective if the item is completely immersed in it?

I've read somewhere online that you can soak a rag or piece of cloth and put it on top of the affected spot. Check on it regularly to make sure the it's stays wet.
