First, there is a big difference between “useable” and “finished.”

If you have been sitting in the gravel with your jack on a plank so it won’t sink into the mud, your “garage” is useable as soon as the slab is hard.

But Steevo is right. They are never finished.

Useable vs. finished. Mine was useable from day one when we bought the place. It was a far cry better than what I had before, nothing, or my SIL's garage.

Going from useable to nice to work in gives you a warm feeling inside. . . . . and in the winter, warm on the outside too.

The footings for mine were dug in the spring of 1999. I didn't get concrete poured until 2005. Doors and HVAC in 2008. Not much since then. The good thing is I can work in there. My project list for the house is almost done and finishing the shop is next. I am a patient man, but it's running very low. I hope to be "done" in 2 years.

I'll consider mine done when I place the cupola and weather vane on the roof. Other than that it's done, well except for the solar air panels I want to build and install, and some trim in the bath room, and some display shelves up high on the walls, and the big storage cabinets I need to bring over from the little shop, and the areas of the floor that I have yet to paint. This place may never be done.

Well, I moved in the house in 1997. It's still not done. I have spent the last year and a half finishing out the basement. Now that it's finished, the next thing is rocking the foundation. That can wait until I get the shop more useable. What takes me so long is that this is my weekend place now. Plus the shop is on the single payment plan. Good thing is, the big expense items are behind me.

my existing garage isn't big, 19x22, 2x4 constuction built in '64.
unfinished, 2 outlets, and a wall switch for an overhead light.

about the only finishing it needs is a bulldozer :shocking:

i did replace the overhead door, and opener 4 years ago, the old wooden door was waterlogged, froze to the slab, and destroyed the old opener.

i guess if i had the time or energy to work on anything, i suppose i'd run new service out there, add some lighting, and outlets.

i'd like to have something bigger, but it'll probably never happen.

Finished...what's that? I broke ground two years ago on my 40x60 pole barn. Building is inclosed, concrete done, main power run to it and rooms sectioned off. Still need to frame inbetween posts, run power through building, insulate, drywall...etc. It is simply a work in progress, when I have the money to do more, I don't have the time. When I have the time to work on it, I just don't have the money :( I currently have two outlets I run extension cords off of and my miller mig gun wired so I can atleast work out there with shoplights but I feel like I will never finish!!!

Yeah.... Mine is just a renovation on our existing 2 car and I have come to realize I have a love/hate relationship with it and it will never be "done" When i think I am going to finish up one aspect and post it I seem to end up wanting to move, change, or whatever something. I also get side tracked with other stuff and end up finishing other people's stuff and back burnering mine. Though I have several benches, i found myself sitting on the floor yesterday hooking up an LED drop light my son got me to my old (but in surprisingly good condition) reel because of other projects I am on. Also, I keep getting ideas from GJ on things to do. I insulated and dry walled the place a year ago, but have not finished or painted it because i keep making changes (mostly thanks to the people on this board). Really, it's a little like the Winchester Mystery House. I can't seem to stop building.

I guess that's the part that drives me nuts. The part I love is when I'm building something and I'm in the zone... Got some Stevie Ray Vaughn or BB King on the stereo, a good cup of coffee or an iced tea, the dog is hanging out with me, and no one is bothering me. I think that's when I appreciate the warmth, electrical, air, and all the other stuff I have done to make it a more useable space... even if it isn't or never will be finished.
