Exelia tile install

Hello,

Really happy with the way the install turned out. I had previously put down some VCT and decided to cover it up with some interlocking tiles.

Highlights:
1. Like the 20"x20" form factor. Preferred this over the more common 12" x12" options out there. Covered about 650ft2....
2. The PVC is pretty dense, pliable and soft to walk on. Easy to cut with a miter saw or sharp exacto. We were looking for a softer resilient tile with a smooth finish. Wanted to be able to easily navigate a ping pong table, drill press, or anything on wheels.
3. Cuts are clean, even a hole saw cut...
4. Snaps together easily with a mallet hammer.
5. Sealed with Hilway Direct. The one thing that bothered me with the VCT was the tire transfer. Hopefully, this will be alleviated/eliminated with the darker Exelia color.

Please take note that our garage is used to house all the kids sports stuff, some nice cabinets, TV, bikes, ping pong table. We're lucky to be in CA and able to spend quite a bit of time outside. The Exelia is perfect for us as my boys are running around barefoot/socks more than me using it as a mechanic's garage.

How did you cut around the lally column? Didn't see a split in the tile.

I am trying to choose between Norse and Exelia myself. Any reason why you went with Excelia?

Amazing project, the colors compliment each other very well, we're glad you loved it! Thanks for sharing and choosing Exelia for your garage! :)

I used a router for the circular cut. Didn't have a hole saw with a big enough diameter.

Measure twice (I think more like 4-5 times) cut once....

I don't remember if I ever sampled the Norsk. I really like the look and feel of the Exelia. No clacking sound when you walk on it. Very dense. Feels like its part of the concrete floor.

AND you were smart to use the Hilway on top!

Looks awesome. I don't see a cut line to fit the tile around the column. How did you install the tile around it? Also does water get to the floor and are they slippery? Did you install the ramp trim piece for the transition at the front of the garage? It seems to me that the tiles are thin enough and esthetics would be the only reason to use it.

I like the different colors of Exelia but also wanted the flow through style that the Norsk tile has for a drain and water spigot

Thanks for the help.

Thank you.

I used a router to cut out the circle. Pretty straight forward and just had to measure carefully to get a nice fit.

I really didn't factor in water. We don't get much rain, so we'll see what happens. It wasn't slippery when I was cleaning prior to sealer.

Here's a pic of the transition (or non transition). I'm going to leave it alone for now. I have a flat bar strip that I used with the VCT. That is the silver piece in the pics.

Does look like the column goes all the way up. Probably cut hole and slid over top.

I was hoping you had some magic trick. Mine is a true support column that extends to the ceiling. I'll need to cut a slit and fit it around the column.

Your garage and floor are beautiful. I am considering a similar upgrade in my main garage.

I have a single car 3rd garage and I installed Race Deck squares in the garage about 7 years ago and I have been happy with it to date. I have noticed that I have permanent stains on the tile from the tires on my car, but otherwise I have been happy with that product.

Did you consider Race Deck, and what made you select Exelia (other than the 20x20 size)?

A couple of other points:
- My main garage houses 2 cars and all my bicycles.
- We are in Southern CA - so inclement weather is extremely rare & not a consideration.

Nice job!

This thread has me now interested in tile flooring for the garage... Originally I did not like the idea of having the clacking sound. I thought I was set on Rust Bullet and now I am looking at colors and pricing of this stuff. Thanks for the thread. Can you elaborate on the Hilway direct part of the install? Did you apply this sealant to the tile? What does that do?

Thanks.

Hilway is a mop on acrylic sealer and maintenance item. You start with a clean tile and mop on 3 coats. If you use the plus you use a cupful in a gallon of water.

PVC tiles never have the clacking noise. You can eliminate it with hard tiles as well by using landscape fabric

Thanks. The Race Deck samples I evaluated were too loud to walk on. I like the PVC look and feel of the Exelia. We also wanted a smooth finish. So far so good on using the Hilway and avoiding tire marks. I believe the darker tiles also help hide any transfer (compared to a lighter grey).

Shipped direct from Exelia next day.

Yeah. Their customer service is odd. I never got any sort of confirmation when I requested the sample but got it a few days later. When I ordered the floor the portal said processing for about 3 days and then changed to complete but no tracking number had been assigned. Then one day about a week after my order I came home and it was just sitting in my driveway. I had no idea to expect it. Really like the product though and am looking forward to seeing how it performs in my home gym.
