Extension Ladder Tool Tray?

Lately, in replacing siding shingles, I find my nail bag has two pliers, two screwdrivers, a utility knife, a block plane, pencils and, oh ya two types of nails. There is also a Wonder Bar and hammer but those are not in the bag.

More often than not something from the bag escapes while avoiding use so it's a trip to the ground. And again and again.

I am thinking I need to find a ladder mounted tool tray or something like that because it is a PIA fishing through the bag pockets to find the needed tool. Actually it needs to be more than a tray but have tall lips to keep the tools on there and also no cover the rung to block the rung from being used to step on.

Edit: On further thought a tray would be disorganized so now I am picturing something like a leather tool belt with stiffly formed individual pockets but the whole thing needs to be adapted to hang on an extension ladder rung, perhaps outset a bit to not void the rung for stepping on higher on occasion.

Ya, I know, just wear it. But that is a lot of bulk to be moving around with if it can be avoided.

I bought a Little Giant brand clip on tray for our collapsing ladder. They were in the clearance racks of the Lowe’s on Ina in Marana, Az.

I hated that ladder before getting the tray, but was too cheap to pay full price, maybe $54. It was less than $20 on clearance, and now that I have it, I’m kicking myself for not buying it as soon as I saw it, even at full price.

I have the clip-on Werner pails for my folding stepladders, but they don't really work well on an extension ladder. Zip-tying the pail handle to a rung is one solution...which I have done with a square horse feed bucket ..

I have one of the LG bags mentioned above. You may want to make some dividers for some of the things. I think I got mine at Lowe’s when it was o sale a couple of years ago.

On sale again at $18.94 down from $26.43.

Great call! Thanks for the low price alert at Lowe’s. Just ordered it. Have had this on my mind for a while.

Dang @PugetDude - I was going to post that bag. I've had one for YEARS that I got with my Little Giant ladder.

@Beemer - It's really made to hang in the middle of an A-Frame ladder. Hanging from one side on an extension ladder, it's going to pivot possibly a fair amount depending on weight.

I have this “Ladder Buddy” attachable shelf thing.

I have no idea how old it is, probably over 30 years old. I know Dad bought it, but not where or when. A quick google search doesn’t turn up any references to it, so it’s probably no longer available.

The thing comes with a couple of steel brackets, a couple of bolts with wing nuts, and a spring. One bracket has a U hole on one end. To use, you climb up the ladder to where you want it, flip the bracket down on to the bolt, and tighten the wing up nuts.

Because the brackets sandwich the side of the ladder, you can adjust for ladder angle so that the shelf is level.

It works pretty well. Right now I have it set up with a homemade bracket to mount it on my scaffolding instead of a ladder.

I wonder if you got this LG Air Tray and mounted it on the opposite site you’re working on would work? Maybe fasten an old cake pan to keep supplies inside the pan.

I have the LG step platform but have never tried it in the opposite side. I know it makes working on the ladder more comfortable.

Here’s another one I just found on EBay for extension ladders.
