Hey guys and gals. I am absolutely fed up with digging thru a box of extensions to find the length I'm looking for. I have been looking at options for organizing them but haven't found anything that will suit my needs. So what cool ideas to the folks of GJ have??

I looked real close at those, do the 1/2" extensions fit well in the slots?

I used to use silverware organizers. They work well if you have a deep enough drawer. Plus you can choose any color you want.

I've posted this before, but here is what I made for my garage.

Looks like I need to do some dusting.

Extensions have been a constant source of frustration for me, they have never been where I wanted them. In my Harbor Freight 44" box I use the narrow drawers for 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive tools and accessories. 1/4 in the #1 drawer , 3/8 #2 drawer and 1/2 in the 3rd. Any none power hand tool accessory (except for sockets) goes there.

So far it's been working for me since I got my box. The only drive tools I don't have in the drawers are the long extensions which live in my pry bar rack.

Good luck!

I have some trays that have various size pockets. They work for everything up to 12" length. After that they get tossed next to the large ratchets. Even though I don't have dig through a pile to find them, I don't like it either.

I use some small plastic baskets from Walmart for extensions and adapters/miscellaneous. Older picture and have reorganized drawer since with ratchets in another drawer and more plastic baskets in the middle with extensions.

I'm not a pro, it's cheap and works for me.

Years ago I put together a set of Craftsman hand tools. The socket sets I purchased have blow molded cases that hold all the pieces in place and the cases fit inside the drawers of my tool chest. When I work on stuff I pull the set I need to do the job and work from the case. After finishing up the case helps to account for all the pieces and I put it back in the drawer.

I'm planning on picking up a Torin magnetic rack (MPH10RT) for my extensions. It's advertised to hold pliers, but I've seen many people use them to hold their hold ratchet extensions. Can't seem to find a better picture right now though..

I'm stealing an idea I saw on another thread here and getting some aluminium angle and drilling semi circular holes in one side and double-sided taping them to the drawers to work as rails for extensions to sit on.

Edit: Like this, but with DIY angle.

I have no problem finding them. Keep the drawer wedged tight and they can't move.

I second the Schaller boxes. Great quality, made in U.S.A. I like them really well. I personally haven't used them for extensions. However, I do use them for punches, chisels, picks, and small files.
In my truck I have a box that I use them extra bolts and things like that.

I don't have many extensions, but I started using a couple organizers I found at bed bath and beyond. They work well for me. image.jpg

Now I know what the "Beyond" in that store name refers to. I wonder if they ever thought any of their merchandise would get this far beyond the bed or bath? :dunno:

For smaller ratchets and extensions, My"pet" drawer organizers are the Craftsman 11 compartment dividers that measure about 10" X 22". Four of the compartments are 9 1/2 long, and seven are smaller and work good for swivels and adapters.. They fit the shallower drawers, and their 10" width leaves enough open drawer space along the 22" side to store longer ratchets, breaker bars, and extensions..

I use Ernst 3 spot plastic tray. They fit everything up to 12" or so. I only have 2 other extensions that are longer than that anyways that I simply lay beside it. I'll post pics then. I think many on here will like it. I even stenciled the 3 drive sizes for each spot

How did you do that so neatly?

Well, a bit obsessive on detail but it only took about 3 hours, having laid out all the tools and drawn round them in pen. I wouldn't have done it unless I'd read all the GJ organisation threads.

GJ's cost me a fortune in tool buying, but it's been fun!

One of the reasons i love my hutch so much is the extension and ratchet storage. However there is no reason why you couldn't use the holder in a drawer, they are pretty cheap and would rivet to the drawer base easily.

Ernst plastic tray. Very thick plastic and I think it was under 10 bucks from my snap on man. I sprayed the stencils on it

I have a couple pieces of aluminum channel that hold my extensions. Drilled the ends and installed a nut/bolt to keep stuff from sliding out the end when I roll it around.

Been thinking about having them anodized various colors but probably won't.

It was an offcut from work, I'm not sure of the brand. It is a medium to dense black foam, I made the straight cuts with a scalpel against a straightedge, and 'mined' out the foam to be removed with a pair of long nose pliers. It was surprisingly easy.
