Exterior Light Install

I just finished framing in my garage and I am getting ready to put on the housewrap followed by vinyl siding to match the existing house. I am putting two lights (sconces) on the outside of the garage on either side of the garage door. I bought the vinyl siding J-channel kits for the lights, but how do I hook it up? Do I put a waterproof box on the outside of the wall or a regular octagonal box? Do I need a box at all? I am trying to make sure it is watertight as possible and want to do it correct. I am in Alexandria, VA if that makes any difference.

I don't think you use J-channel with these - but I haven't wired mine yet -
