Failed Anti-Drain Back Valve?

I was changing the oil on one of my older Honda 4 cylinder engines where the oil filter mounts sideways (parallel to the ground). Normally, quite a bit of oil dumps down the side of the block when the filter is removed. This time nothing came out of the filter. I held the filter upside down and only saw a few drops fall into the waste oil pan. Is this what a failed anti-drain back valve looks like?

I searched this topic and saw some threads on various forums where the OP heard knocking or clattering on startup. I don't recall hearing anything like that. I also didn't notice anything out of the ordinary on my aftermarket digital oil pressure gauge. It has a short ~5 second startup animation before it displays a reading, but it was always 80 to 90 psi on cold start when I would glance at it.

I was just curious since I can't remember ever seeing this in the past 25 years.

If their vehicle had a K24Z7 or K24Z2/Z3, then the VTC actuator was likely failing, unrelated to the oil pressure concern. On anything other than K-series, nothing can/should be rattling because nothing is oil pressure actuated at low RPM unless for some reason the VTEC solenoid valve is stuck open, which is extremely rare.

Regarding the filter flaw, I've only ever seen aftermarket filters fail in the way you are describing, but it's entirely possible that any filter can fail in this manner.

Yea that orange is the drain back valve it doesn't look right in the picture.
Does the filter rattle if you shake it like the filter itself is loose in the can?

That appears to be a Mann + Hummel made M1 filter, it is basically a Purolator One.

At least for a time they were a little notorious for the tapping plate having a rough edge which cuts the ADBV.

Should be able to date it by the code on the top.

ADBV int the center tube looks normal from what i can see.

BTW if its recent that WIX is a M+H too.

I've used the Purolator One for my last 4 oil changes. I think it's a decent filter. Didn't look that close but don't remember seeing any ADBV damage. Mine sits vertically so it's always full of oil anyway. Thanks for the heads up.
