Gerber Gator folder, non serrated has been in my pocket 10 years now. Great knife. Its been a chisel, punch, shucked oysters, widdled prayer sticks, gutted, skinned many deer, bears and moose with it. Lock and blade are still very tight. Made in Portland Oregon. Not too much coin either. I like my Buck knives too. Vanguard and Skinner.

I also carry the Gerber Gator, but the half serrated blade. Had it close to 15 years now, never go anywhere without it.

This is the last knife I purchased and that was over two years ago. I simply stopped looking after I got it. It's a Cold Steel Recon 1 50/50 tanto blade. I've been through CRKT, Gerber, Spyderco, etc. knives and they've all been just fine but I wan't completely happy until this Cold Steel. What I like about it is the low weight and how remarkably solid it feels. There is just no play or give in this knife anywhere, in any position. Also, the blade holds its edge like nothing I've ever seen.

Edit: It's also very reasonably priced. The review states it's hard to open, and it was when I first purchased it but now it's much better after some use.

After trying most of the rest, I find a plain old Case Trapper to be the most useful for my purposes. It takes an edge without much work, holds it through a reasonable amount of use, walks, talks and doesn't take up much room in my pocket.

Super compact, no clip so no worry about work carry in pocket.
Small discrete when need to be used in public. Holds an edge like no other, made in USA

Picked up a kershaw leek a couple months ago and have been very happy with it. I just don't see the point of dropping more than 50$ on a knife

I'm a knife junkie and have a ton. I love the Leatherman Charge series though. Especially the one with the S30V steel blade...wicked.

I have a Boy Scout knife. Been using it for years.

Lately I've taken an interest in double action auto OTF knives. I live in Illinois, so I don't know how I can get one without possibly running into trouble.

Any ideas?

Case barlow. Dad carried one for years. He gave one to me when I was a youngster. I've been carrying it ever since. His was not stainless blades. Mine is stainless and early 1980s vintage.

That's a random picture from the web, but a very close match to my knife.

I also carry a Case knife in my pocket. An 80's Stockman with CV blade.

Hey thundermug you can buy auto knives online if you live in IL just don't show it off to the cops lol. At least when I ordered mine I had no trouble.

I currently carry the Leatherman Wave, but I was looking into purchasing a Kershaw knife. Any thoughts of Smith and Wesson?

Question for my fellow NB'er on here:
BenchMade Infidel
I've often thought I'd like to have an OTF auto for the novelty of it but don't you end up feeling a little self conscious? I can't imagine whipping out a tactical dagger to help a coworker open up a clamshell package, open up a ups envelope or whatever else we all do everyday with our pocket knives?

I'd also think I'd have a hard time keeping from playing with it like I was clicking the button on a pen when I'm distracted.

Damn cool knife, I think I've got one in my future, but I think I'll have to relegate it to the zombie drawer.

im a cable guy and use a Klein splicers knife all the time, wouldn't be without one. Nice rubber handle and short straight blade. Doesn't retract and I don't even keep it that sharp, though it will hold an edge. I am very rough with it, cutting shrink boot off of metal and pulling hard with a lot of force. Why I leave it a little dull in case I slip. Mine has an orange handle which has come in handy to find when dropped from a pole (have searched for hours). Also keep a gerber multi-tool in the side pocket of my carharts for everything else. Jack of all trades, master of none, but a solid tool with an unconditional warranty which I have used and recieved a new one after 10 years.

Don't carry it everywhere but I recently bought a blue Svord Peasant friction folder.
Modifications so far have been confined to adding a nylon washer to one of the Chicago bolts so the blade doesn't touch the bolt.
Its of **** a simple design that just basically works that I'm half surprised other makers don't do many friction folders. Also I'm finding myself looking at fulltang sheath knife blade blanks and thinking it would be dead easy to make a different version of the knife.

Here's a picture I found on the net of a Svord Peasant.

After having Opinel twistlocks as a kid I like basic and inexpensive knifes, can't be done with serrated blades either.
I suppose if I was after something else it would be a Sodbuster (Queen Cutlery Country Cousin Sod Buster or maybe Case) because I like the simplicity.

Spyderco Tasman Salt, plus a Leatherman Surge. Victorinox German Army knife (one hand trekker in olive drab) for food use. If I'm on deck, a Victorinox "little Vicky" on my foul weather gear straps.

I carry one of these, easy to sharpen & holds an edge. At one time someone liberated this from an army signalmens tool kit (knife, dikes, pouch).
