With these extra batteries I'll have gone from having no Fein tools to having the more Fein cordless stuff than I do any other brand in just a few short weeks! Thanks for sharing the wealth Fein and Shane/ToolNut.
I got a bit of time tonight to put together a picture show.
The kit comes in exactly the same case as the drill. I put one on top of the other and they are totally identical from the outside. Also I didn't notice that there were little depressions in the top of the case but they nicely stack and sort of lock in a little bit.
Tada! The kit comes with the SuperCut, two batteries, the charger, an accessories case and a little plastic shield thing that is used to protect your hands from sharp blades while doing a blade change. I don't really get that yet though... I looked at the manual but didn't really understand it. There's also a space in the middle of the foam insert next to the spare battery where you could put larger accessories such as scraper blades.
There's a good bit of storage space in this plastic case since the blades are pretty small. I put all the blades that I bought with the kit in here and there's a lot of extra room.
Here's the actual SuperCut tool. It's pretty hefty, the areas that are black are cast metal. The areas that are orange are hard plastic like on the Drill.
I sort of expected this lever on the back to be plastic but it's a piece of metal and it is SOLID. There's quite a bit of resistence to opening the lever so I don't expect most would be able to pop it open one handed.
I tested and the 4Ah Drill batteries work on the SuperCut. They aren't much bigger than the 2.4Ah batteries either. Here's what the SuperCut looks like with the 4Ah drill battery.
Here's a comparison of the 2Ah vs the 4Ah battery. I was kinda suprised by the differences between them. It seems like Fein doesn't just make standard 18V batteries, but shapes them to match the design of the tool with a standardized mount so they will work between tools but may look a bit weird.
Now onto the blade mount. This is what the default blade mount looks like which only works with SuperCut and Festool Vecturo blades.
This is what it looks like with the Multi-Master adapter mounted. I'm not super excited about the way this works. I'm sure it will do the job but it does feel a bit janky compared to the standard SuperCut mount. I wish I had a SuperCut blade to test on it because I have a feeling they will mount a lot more solidly than a Multi-Master blade with the adapter. Also I wonder if the actual Multi-Master only mounts with 4 points like this or if it mounts with 8 as it looks like the blades are designed for. I couldn't find a good picture of the Multi-Master blade mount.
If you do use the adapter, I advise against buying blades with an open back like this. I tried using this blade and it was moving all over the place left and right since it really only has one solid mounting point in the front. It was skipping left and right and would not stay mounted in the orientation I put it in. I tested it with a completely enclosed Fein Multi-Master blade and this didn't happen.
As you can see, there's just not a lot to index the blade with using the adapter and as the blade opens up a bit it'll skip positions.
I made a couple of test cuts in some 2x6s and it blasted right through them with a wood E-cut blade. Since I've never used a multi tool before I had a bit of a hard time keeping the blade in position but I'm sure that's just technique that I'll acquire as I use it more. On full power it really feels like a beast, but it is also LOUD. It may be quieter than other oscillating tools but it is by no means quiet. If you're someone who wears hearing protection then... you're going to want to wear hearing protection. I have a feeling when I start on the drywall repair in the garage that this thing is going to go through the drywall like a laser through melted butter.
I can't believe I almost bought a Milwaukee M12 oscillating tool, and a few weeks later have this monster instead. It is an absolute tank, and seems to be built as well as the drill. Now we just have to hope for Fein to bring more 18V stuff to the US, and for ToolNut to get us some more sweet deals!
Hope this helps somebody make their decision.
Also, I'm going to see if I can get one of those ALEDs here to the US. There's gotta be some where I can grab one from with a german translator. If I succeed, I'll post here in case others want to try to get one.
