I feel bad for people in other countries with crazy shipping plus import fees :(I'm sure the big corporations find a way around it and get big breaks on shipping too.

I made an edit to my above post, regarding free shipping from Amazon, has happened twice now, the first time I didn't realise so got them to send a replacement, then both items arrived - the next time I just took the refund and hoped it would still come haha

Well. I didn't waffle too much. Brushed off my German from the cobwebs in my head, watched a bunch of German you tube videos expounding on the awesomeness of this drill and then I bought one.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I might have to do that. I have a dozen Metabo LT18 drills at work that are great. But this is tempting...

For N-Zed shipping, why don't you try one of those reshipping companies in the US? You get around the requirement that a US dealer only sell in the US (or whatever territory one is authorized to sell in). There's a few major websites out there that do this for people (i.e. ship packages mailed within the US to abroad via consolidation of containers). Ebay Worldshipping for one, I take it.

Just ordered one for myself.

Looks like they have a few Fein vac's at a reasonable price too. I was going to go for a Metabo vac, but they may have the same OEM (have to double check that).

ShaneToolNut (If you're reading this): what's the score on the various Fein Vac's that you offer? Love to get one to use with my Metabo sanders. Don't mind going for the best model if it's worth the extra bucks.

Speaking of Fein: I remember Home Depot selling the detail sander a while back (in a canvas/cloth bag -- with attachments). I'm wondering -- because I know some makers have made different grades of tool for big box stores or Costco and the like: was that the case with Fein? I'd doubt it -- but thought I'd ask anyway. Sometimes in order to meet the margins a big box will ask a company to cut corners in someway to make a price. Again, not suggesting at all this was the case with Fein but that detail sander was a pretty good deal when I bought at Home Depot a few years ago.

The Fein vacs have always been very affordable, the $299 for their Turbo I has always been that price since they revamped it.

That said, Fein removed the adjustable suction control on their motors w/ the latest redesign, and now rely on the suction control via an adjustable collar. Not too big of a deal if you always use hearing protection, but it's nice for low noise if you don't need all the suction. If you find an older Fein Turbo, they'll still have it though (they're the round ones).

Metabo rebrands of Starmix vacuums. Bosch used to rebrand Starmix as well, though now they are rebranding Karcher. Nilfisk is the other big player in German vacuum systems, all three are great. Fein designs their own vacs I believe, as does Festool (though if you find some super old ones, you'll find they're made by Nilfisk). Nilfisk also mfgs some asbestos rated vacs for Festool in Europe as well.

It's worth checking out Makita if you're in the market too, they're rebranding Nilfisk vacs. The entry price is more than the Fein, but gets you auto-clean allowing you to use it for drywall/concrete, at a lower price point than the Metabo and Bosch. Festool has this as well, but for $800, and it lacks the ability to clean without pausing suction.

Great info. Thanks! I'm looking for something all purpose, probably to hook up my Metabo sanders too, first and foremost. Do you know if I went with the Fein, are hookups general compatible? Or would I need to have special connectors were I to go with a Fein vac?

Does anyone know if a metal chuck is available? I'm sure the plastic one is great.... just a preference thing.

Or are any of the interchangeable chuck systems compatible with other companies like Metabo? It looks very similar to Metabo's. Definitely going to see if my metabo quick release chuck will fit on it when it comes.

I pulled the trigger with the rest of you. I don't own another Fein product so I'm excited to see how it does.

I'm not familiar w/ the included hose with the Fein, nor the Metabo sanders. I have a Starmix vac and a mix of Bosch, Festool, and Makita sanders, but I do have a Metabo paint remover. The Bosch sander and paint remover works w/ no adapters, the Festool sanders needs a $15 adapter, the Makita, I used a $2 adapter.

The hose looks very similar to the Bosch one, which is very similar to the Starmix ones. I actually purchased a Bosch 22mm hose as well since it reduces the weight a lot, and it's really inexpensive. If you do get the Fein, measure it, and I can lead you to adapters I've found that work.

Gents,

Sorry for the delay responding. I don't think the forum sent me a notification of new posts despite being subscribed to the thread. Plus, I was out of town over the weekend.

We have sold out of the Fein ASCM 18 drills. But, don't worry if you didn't pull the trigger in time. We have more on the way and should have them back in stock by the end of the week or thereabouts. If you order now, we will not bill your card until it ships. But, we will likely not get any more at this price after this next shipment.

@Vinko, as for vacs, Fein makes nice vacuums. If you don't want or care about HEPA filtration, the Fein Turbo I is your best bet. If you want HEPA or plan to do any work in a home with lead-based paint, you will need HEPA to meet RRP regulations. That would be the Fein Turbo II HEPA.

If you need any help or have further questions, hit me up at [email protected]. I often respond to emails as late as midnight Eastern.

Hey Pureleaf: not 100% sure, but I believe there's an OEM for Metabo chucks. I want to say Rohm? I can check at work. We had a Metabo we sent in for repair to an authorized repair shop and he gave me the low down: I could have the Metabo chuck for some crazy amount or the samething rebranded for considerably less (I want to say it was like $89 vs $30 or something like that). The Rohm chuck I chose was made in Germany. A keyless chuck. This was for the 18 LT or LTX. I can't remember which.

I have about 8 of these Metabo drills and we're putting them through the paces and they've been great. So far. I bought a few oldies on Fleabay too and most have been good.

That said, for the price, I pulled the trigger on the Fein just to have for my own easy-peasy projects. Just a present to myself.

Thanks Shane. I keep waffling on what to get. But you seem like good people and if the Fein would work as well as the Metabo for my sanders, then what the heck. The one thing to be said for buying a vacuum from a website with responsive people is if you need bags, adapters, et al., it's easier to get from guys like you then from an website that's just selling stuff.

I'm tempted to go with the HEPA. I won't be using it for lead paint or fine clean up (though I guess drywall will be serviced by either Turbo I or II) from what I've read.

On the Turbo 1 by the way, apparently you can get a HEPA filter for it as well? At least that seems to be what's suggested on the website.

What are the main differences between Turbo I and II besides HEPA?

Now I'm really torn:

Fein Turbo 1 for $299

http://www.toolnut.com/Fein_92027236090_Turbo_I_Vacuum_p/92027236090.htm

Metabo ASR 35 for about $585 (give or take depending upon where you buy:

http://www.toolfetch.com/metabo-1-4...rm=602055420&gclid=CIuK7_SBh8gCFU1qfgodu7YEEg

Or the Bosch which looks to be the same as the Fein but at $459:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008IBKDEG/?tag=atomicindus08-20

And then there are other Bosch that look like rebranding of Starmix (thanks Monte for the heads up! and equivalent to Metabo) though links escape me.

It may well be that the Fein Turbo I for saw dust extraction is the best bet.

This was the other Fein tool I have:

https://www.toolnut.com/Fein_FMM350QStart_Multimaster_Oscillating_Tool_Kit_p/fmm350qstart.htm

The MultiMaster with entry-level "kit" - or at least equivalent -- in the bag. They had them at Home Cheapo - at about this price $199 or maybe less (Can't remember). After using a friends often, I had to get my own. I had wondered if Fein maybe didn't make a version for Big Box stores, but I guess not -- mine's held up and appears to be the same as the one in the more expensive "kits". Though I do wish I had the bad *** case that the others like this one come in.

And I sort of am inclined to get a case like this for the Fein. Anyone know if just the case is available?

This one says "systainer" edition:

https://www.toolnut.com/Fein_FMM350Q_TOP_Multimaster_Oscillating_Tool_Kit_p/fmm350qsys.htm

But I assume they're all systainers of a sort?

@Mgnu,

First, again very sorry for the unusual delays in shipping. We usually get orders out the door within 24 hours.

For those who have ordered the Fein drills, we should be shipping most of the outstanding orders today. If you want to shoot me an email with your name and/or order number, I can see if I can get more information from our warehouse team.

Again, apologies for the delay. Hopefully the great deal is worth the short delay.

@Vinko,

The other difference between the Turbo I and II is the capacity, 5.8 gal vs. 8.4 gal respectively. And, yes, you can get a HEPA filter for the Turbo I.

We have the Fein Systainer separately but it doesn't have the Multimaster insert (told hold all of the MM pieces and tool).

https://www.toolnut.com/Fein_33901146000_Orange_T_LOC_Systainer_SYS_1_p/33901146000.htm

Shane

Nice one Shane. Might just have to snag this. Is it possible to get this insert? Anyone know?

FYI ---- I made a full review about this drill last night (Specifically for the people who are on the fence & dont want to miss out on Toolnut's unreal pricing on this drill).

Here is the thread --> http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304351

Thanks for doing this, always like your reviews.

Shane, you should send more stuff to woodstockva, he provides much better reviews than the clowns at Tools In Action.

Yeah, definitely a very thorough and well done video review.

Plus, he's right up the road a ways from me and a fellow Virginian.

Woot woot. My shipping confirmation just came in. Very excited to get this tool. Strangely though I got two emails. One was from [email protected] and it had the standard shipping info and tracking number and like a receipt. The other was from "Pace Jet" and it has less information? I'm not sure what that second email is for. Or what Pace Jet is.

I also got two emails, so I wouldn't worry. One of them looks like a receipt/invoice and the other is a shipping notice. They probably use two different software packages to charge and ship orders.

Pace Jet is just a system we use to choose the best ship method. Sorry for the confusion. I've passed this along to our warehouse folks so they can prevent the duplicate emails.

And, great news... It looks like ALL of the remaining drills are out the door. So, if you ordered one, it's on its way!

Like I said, we do expect to have these back in stock near the end of the week. But that will likely be the last of what we can offer at this deep discounted price.

Enjoy and thanks for the orders.

Well, that sold me on it. Picked one up. I have such a hard time passing up any good deal on a good tool. Do I really need 4 cordless drills? I'm sure not but here's number 4!

What? Only 4? Of course you need more. Okay, maybe not. I've actually only ever found a need for 3 drills and/or drivers at the same time, working by myself. 4 when working with a tool-less compadre. But having 4 gives you more options!

Note: I actually have 5 cordless drills (2 are dead NiCad units), 2 impact drivers, and 2 dorky drivers. Plus two corded drills.

And I'm wanting to get a brushless "12"v drill and impact. (If I do I'll likely sell/give away some existing 12v brushed tools.)

Oh, and this Fein may very well be the tool I've been seeking for a gift for someone...

Second this. woodstockva's reviews are much better than Tools In Action.

Man, that seems like an awesome job! I would love to check out new tools for a living.

My drill arrived just now. I'm impressed with the shipment packing job by Toolnut and of course the apparent quality of the drill, its case, and accessories. I never get in on a screaming deal - and yet here it is! And no, it does not resemble anything found at Harbor Freight.

Mine has arrived. Very impressed with the overall kit. It may be a little bit of a plain looking drill but it is very, very high quality. Drill made in Germany, battery is Korea, charger is China (pretty much what I expected). The convertible chuck system is pretty neat, I like the idea.

Also very happy with the service from Tool Nut. Shane communicated via email when it looked like there would be a delay, and ultimately the item arrived well packed. In for whatever Tool Nut deal comes next

Do most cordless drill or driver sets come with the battery installed in the tool, like Dewalt/Milwaukee, etc? Haven't bought a cordless kit in a long time. There's no harm to the battery leaving it installed? I would think think it would cause drain over time.
