As long as they honor their 3 year warranty I am fine

At least by custom, if not by law, manufacturers of goods sold in the USA time the warranty to begin when an item represented as new is actually sold, not when it is made. No worries at all there. I'm actually tempted to buy another one of these drills, the deal is so good, to keep in my truck.

I thought I'd mention two more things about this drill now that I've played with it a bit more. First, I was worried about the chuck like a lot of you. It's a heavy solid chuck. Yeah the outside of it is plastic but the innards are metal as is the mount to the output shaft of the motor.

Also, the chuck is HEAVY. It feels very solid and I don't think anyone should be worried about it.

Here's a little picture show to maybe help people decide:
c8C8cHl.jpg

RMx53uj.jpg

First, just some shots of the chuck externally.

vJtjWRq.jpg

This is how the interchangeable chucks mount to the output shaft of the motor. As you can see there's a recess in the outside of the shaft that a ball bearing detent locks into. When you pull the orange part of the collar forward you allow the ball to slide into the chuck and release from that recess.

moJcTTH.jpg

I tried to get a shot of the inside of the chuck and it's a little hard to see but I think there's enough there to understand it. The inside of the chuck is a really solid and thick metal sleeve, containing the ball detent. In addition, you can see that the actual connection from the chuck to the output shaft of the motor is a hexagon shaped metal shaft which is very tight and transfers the power.

I would say if anyone is in need of a really powerful and super nice drill just get this one and don't worry about the chuck. I was and I think it was unfounded. For 169$ I don't think you can beat this thing for a full size non compact drill. Every part of this thing just feels awesome. I can't stop playing around with it. I keep moving the case around and thinking that I can't believe how nice the case even is.

Also, a warning... I would NOT advise trying to chuck down the drill by driving the drill into your hand. That's how I always opened and closed the chuck on my old cordless drills. Well this thing has some serious power and when it really gets going because it is so fast... I burnt the DANG out of the inside of my hand trying to stop the chuck. I've got a nice line burned where the edge of the chuck was. This isn't a big deal in practice though because it has a ratcheting chuck that actually seems to work well unlike some of my other drills. I used to drive the drill to tighten the chuck because if I tried to use the normal ratcheting action of the chucks the bits would just fall out. Not the case with this drill.

The only time companies will warranty based on the date of manufacture is if you don't have proof of purchase. They go by what ever date code is on the tool. That's the nice thing about online orders and gmail you always have a copy of a receipt.

Kinda a shame about that plastic chuck, ordered one as a present for my dad. Otherwise I might pick up one for myself too.
The chuck is identical to Rohm chucks with metal sleeve. Except for the outer sleeve... It´s for protecting the workpiece in case you hit it with the chuck.

Has anyone heard whether Fein plans to release other chucks for this drill? Right angle and eccentric chucks, like Festool, would be useful.
i heard there is finally something on the way...

They are probably much more appreciated in Europe.
There is a 35 page thread about the Fein cordless drills in a german forum:

At least the germans like Fein it seems :)

I'd still say screw the work piece. I want a metal chuck. If my metabo quick release chuck fits, I'll be buying a 2nd one of those and popping it on.

Found spare chucks for $60, here...

http://feintools-online.com/63208001020-fein-drill-chuck.html

They are made by Rohm for Fein, and have the carbide jaw inserts which leans toward the higher end of the spectrum. And IMO that's really not a bad price for a Rohm chuck and quick change that's even stamped "Germany," German COO irregularities notwithstanding.

I'm curious if the quick change mechanism itself is separable from the chuck, perhaps that is where Rohm ends and Fein begins?

That reminds me to never lose the chuck!!

Hey guys: this is the replacement ROHM chuck I got on one of my Metabos. I think it was about $30 and a guy who repairs Metabos said it happened to be OEM for Metabo -- whether or not it simply ROHM as OEM or this particular model no. of ROHM being OEM for this particular model of Metabo, I didn't ask. But I've been pretty happy with other ROHM holding devices and chucks.

Haven't gotten my drill yet, but I expect it soon.

That said, speaking of Fein and Systainer casings: does anyone know if the inserts can be had for specific configurations? I have the detail sander by Fein -- I think it's the Multicaster [sic?] -- I'd love to get the insert and buy the Systainer case for it. I got the Fein multicaster at Home Depot and it came with the cloth bag.

Did everyone's drill come with 4ah batteries? The one shipped to me only came with 2ah packs.

Yes, my batteries were both 2ah also. I will contact Toolnut tomorrow. I have no doubt that they will take care of it. I am very pleased with them--shipped very fast and well packed.

While I haven't used the drill yet, it appears to be very good quality. The case alone is impressive.

Thats disappointing to hear. I hope the one I ordered for myself, and the 2nd one I ordered for a family member don't end up having to be RMA'd for the correct battery packs.

Wow....unreal deal......I have one & it is definitely a big upgrade over the normal brands you will see at the box stores.

The 4 speeds, brushless motor, removable chucks, plastic case, & (2) 4.0ah batteries are a steal at this price. They must be clearing them out.....this drill is NOT made in China....it is made in Germany.

Are we saying better than M18 Fuel?

I'd assume the DRC/PDC insert would be kind of close to this thing?

I use the T18/C18 insert for my Metabo drill and it works fine with a little melting, the Metabo is much smaller than the DRC/PDC/ASCM though.

There are two model numbers, one with the 4 Ah batteries (QX) and one with the 2 Ah batteries (QXC). The box indicated that it was the correct QX model, but it was packaged with the 2 Ah batteries. Nothing that Toolnut could have noticed without opening it up. Again, I have no doubt that they will work out after I contact them.

Joe, just checking back in on the thread after a busy weekend here. Sorry to read about the batteries being incorrect. Feel free to send me an email with your contact information so we can locate you in our system and we'll get this corrected for you pronto. Feel free to use in the drill in the mean time if you need to.

I have asked that the warehouse guys check our remaining inventory. But, yeah, we didn't expect the wrong batteries to be in the cases. Sorry for the inconvenience but we'll make it right for you quick and easy.

I just got mine, pretty fast I might add, not with the extra bit case like some lucky ones but with the 4.0A batteries.

On a side note to Fein, please make the tool registration easier.

I got a little time out in the garage to play around with the Fein. I had a 1/2" spiral bit on it and in top gear it was just going right through 2x4s like a laser or something. I don't even have good drill bits, this is out of a B&D set I got from Walmart like 6 years ago and have never sharpened.

I always really liked my Bosch 18V and now I feel like it's a whimpy baby drill. I can't believe how impressive the whole package is, and especially for 169$! I'm glad I ignored my "better judgement" that I had enough drills.

Shane, when's the next Fein deal coming? :D

I have a similar feeling, compared to my Bosch drills this is a beast.
Very solid build but it feels quite heavier than the Bosch drills.
It is also more then twice as fast as my Bosch 18V drills.

Glad you guys have received your drills, put them to the test, and are satisfied with your purchase.

Joe, thanks for posting the update. Glad to hear the battery issue is being sorted out quickly for you. Thanks for being understanding. Very odd that a couple these were wrong from the manufacturer. The warehouse went through our remaining inventory to check them all as a result, so we appreciate you letting us know about it.

I noticed it on two diff. model no's on the box too. My QX just arrived today with 4 Ah batteries.

Thanks for the reply Rice. I don't know the T18/C18 insert -- what I want to do is buy another Fein Systainer case and then buy (if possible) an insert that will fit the MultiMaster. That may or may not be possible. My Fein Multicaster was the model sold in the cloth bag by Home Depot. A great unit, but I suppose to get it down to that price they ditched the Systainer case and a lot of the accessories.

Had I known about Toolnut then, I would've picked up the MultiMaster there because they have a mid-range set at a very reasonable price.

I'll def. be buying more gear form them as I need it.

PS. Ended up getting the Metabo ASR 35 Vac with Hepa for about $600 -- they had a price drop in the last few days on Amazon -- with only a few units left at that price.

I am hoping they are still in stock after I get paid next week....

I hope they have some left.

Myself, I'm doing the math on 2 spare batteries - over $200 each vs a 2nd unit a this sale price... I only got a "B" in Addition, but I think: $400 > $169.

Mine came today. What a beast of a machine. No issues 2 4 amp batteries as expected. Where are your batteries made? Mine are Korea. Others seem to be Japan. Just curious.

I also thought this was a great deal and bought one. I had it delivered to a US address I have in NY state and was there today to pick it up. Unfortunately I also got the 2.0 Ah batteries, my box does have the QXC on it. (the drill and the case look awesome)

Shane, I will PM you my Toolnut order number, please let me know what else you need, thanks

Got your message and replied. We'll get this sorted out quickly for you. Again, sorry for the complications.

BTW, I think I said it already, but we did go through the rest of our inventory to make sure no more drills were shipped with the wrong batteries. There were a few others we found. Sorry to those affected. And, for what it's worth, we've never stocked the QXC with the 2.0Ah so it's not an inventory mix up.

It would be interesting to know how many drills ToolNut sold. This has to be some of the best sales numbers in units Fein has had in awhile :) You can't beat the $169 price. That's what a Milwaukee brushed M18 drill with 1.5 ah batteries would cost on average. I would love to see a similar deal on the a cordless Fein Multimaster/Supercut in a few months. Anyways what is the difference between the Multimaster and Supercut?
