awesome garage .... what size is your ceiling height? height below the beam? and the width and height of lift? thanks man

The ceiling height in the garage is 11'8" in the main area and in the center bay were the lift is, the ceiling is 12'8", because I knew I was going to put a lift in and wanted to make sure I had plenty of room.

The height below the beam is about 10'2"

The spec of the lift can be found at Rotery's web site, it is their asymmetric 10K lift.

Hope that helps you..??

great build i hope preston gets to watch cartoons out there while your puttin down the race deck thanks for sharing

After we got home today from church and had breakfast, I told him I had something to show him in the garage. He asked me "what is it daddy". I told him it is the biggest TV he has ever seen. His eyes got as big as apples and he started dragging me to the garage. I took him out there and turned on cartoon, and he was LOVING IT.

So yes, He will spend alot of time out there with me hanging out and watching what ever he wants, since he IS my special little buddy!!!

And not a problem sharing, this has been pretty darn fun.

There is plenty of rm, we made sure to measure before we placed the lift. Even with our 2500 HD truck, at full lift it will be fine. Cars, you will not have to worry about becasue you do not have to pull that far up.

Oh, maybe I did not mention, but the lift is a asymmetric lift, so the front of the car is not that far forward. I know it is kinda hard to see in the pic, but its all good.;)

Sounds great man! I use that exact lift all day long at work so I am definitely familiar! Although mine is "plain" blue and semi-worn out!! haha It has probably lifted 10,000 vehicles maybe more! I figured it was just the angle of the pics! You have done all your homework! Keep up the great work!

I love it, you have done a masterful job of thinking ahead.

I have tried, that is for sure. It has been 5 yrs in the making, in my mind and on notes, but I must say, when all this was going on, it was a pretty stressful time for me, that is for sure, thinking about every detail, and making sure that I was not missing anything, and wondering if I was going to be able to afford it. Once this is over with, I must say, we are going to be stretched pretty thin for a while, that is for sure!! But you know, you only live once and you can not take it with you when you die..............

I have a much smaller space than yours , I'm conserned about forgetting something . I couldn't imagine placing all that stuff in the right place. You did an excelent job with it.

Wow, what a project. Congratulations, enjoy it!

Yes, it has been one heck of a project that has moved pretty fast. Thanks.

Woah that's a big TV!

Yeah, like a said before, I would have NEVER have gotten anything like this, but I could not pass p the deal that I got on it.

I am very glad I waited to get the black lift, it really does fit in. Well, I must say, I had many sleep less nights, thinking about all the stuff that need to happen, and the guys were moving so darn fast on the project. I did forget a couple of things, but nothing that I can't live with out.

Well guys, I have not posted in a couple of day, I have been pretty busy.

The electricain finished hanging all the lights, and let me tell you, what a HUGE diffence it makes the space look. I thought I was going to have TOO much light, but I think it is just right.

They also got all the cove base board down and the the trim in the bathroom finished too.

Today, the lift got wired up and a couple of misc. things. I still need to get all the bathrm lights up, and the towel rack, tolet paper holder, shower doors installed, and some shelves in the small closet in the bathroom.

Also, my compressor arrived yesterday at my shop, and man is it big!! I got it loaded in the truck, and I have a friend coming over tomorrow to help unload with his front loader on his tractor, since it wieghs 800lbs. I will get some pics of that up tomorrow.

I also took the screen for the center channel to my friends shop and media blasted it and repainted black to fit in with the painted black line on the wall.

On with the pics:

The new lights, all 20 of them:

SANY1242.jpg

SANY1238.jpg

SANY1239.jpg

SANY1240.jpg

Now the cove base that they put down, really finishes off the bottom of the walls I think so:

SANY1245.jpg

SANY1247.jpg

SANY1246.jpg

They also trimmed out the exhaust fan, which still needs to be painted, but it turned out nice, now I just have to figure out how the heck to make so type of opener for it, so I don't have to use a stick. Any suggestions will be great:

SANY1248.jpg

Here is what the center channel for the surround sound looks like now all painted to match the wall:

SANY1243.jpg

SANY1244.jpg

Well, there you guys, so more progress for ya. We still have more to do, so there will be more..................;)

Could you re-hinge the door on the exhaust fan so that they were on the top of the frame instead? this way a pulley mounted on the ceiling could open it and gravity could close it. You can tie the line down with one of those curtain rods to get it out of the way.

The interior is really coming together -- even from here it's amazing the transformation from bare walls. The little things like making the speaker grill blend in to the paint make a difference. Well done.

You, it is funny you gave that suggestion, because that was the first thing my contractor came up with. I was hoping to be able to put something in that was a little more of a "cleaner" install. Kinda like a electric opener of some sort, just hit a button to open and close it. I know, that is a little over the top for a exhaust fan, but it still would be neat though.

Thank you, I did not want to get this far and not do the little details that can make or break the "look" of the garage.

The painter is coming back at the end of the week to do some touch ups around the garage, which will include putting the lines on some access panels on the walls for the water, cable and phone lines and the gound rod in the foundation.

Heck, I am going as far as putting the lines on the light switch covers, since one of them is half in the black and half in the white. If you are going to do it, you might as well go all the way with it, if you are able to. I will get some pics up tomorrow as to what I mean.

Thanks for checking it all though.

It looks great. Did you plan that stripe to be that wide to fit the center speaker in it? I'll never remember something like that. You kicked **** remembering something like that.

No I did not. I made that line that big to make sure all the plugs were within the line. I did not want to go right in line with the plugs, because he measures the plugs from the floor up and with the floor having slope to it, some plugs would have been half in the white and half in the black. So we measured what the bottom of a plug was at the front of the garage and then measured one at the back and went from there. In some of the pics, you can see the black line is a little bit larger at the top of the plug than the bottom, and visa versa. Once again it is hard to see since it is all black.

If you look close at the pic of the speaker, you can see that I taped off the top of the speaker, a little less than a half inch or so and painted the rest black. It is kinda hard to see, but the speaker used to be all white, like the wall speakers.

It's coming along a treat. The lighting looks bob on - nice and bright but not too much if you get what I mean.

Have you got the kid on Christmas eve feeling? It's nearly there and you can't sit still for excitement!!

I still think you need to paint the grey and red on the lift.

Don't over think the fan door. I would just make up a nice long handle with a pivot mount that hangs on the door all the time. Much like the handle on a window blind. Please don't paint the stripes on the hoist. I think shop equipment should keep it's original color. Awsome shop. I'm sure you and your family will get alot of enjoyment from it. I can only imagine what my brothers and myself would have been able to to with access to something like this when we were growing up. My dream is to buy the little falling down house next door and build a similar setup with a rental unit above to pay for it. Then I could move the fleet of dirt bikes out of the basement.

I was thinking of a handle/stick with a groove in it to catch the knob on the door, so the same kind of thinking.

Oh, and don't worry, I will NOT paint the lift, I think it looks great all black. (Sorry Buzz)

Fan door-

I'm envisioning a very small gas strut like this: LINK, probably the top one with 10 lbs. force.

Held shut with a cabinet latch of some kind, maybe like this: LINK

Pretty simple, and it should work with some tweaking. The other option you have since you have a power source there is a linear actuator with switch outside on the wall...but that's much more complicated.

Why is there a big gap in the bottom of the doors?

I see what you are saying, but the bottom of the door frame on the threshold is brown, so from the picture, it looks like a gap, but there is not. If you look close, you can see it.

The very bottom is the a peice of black trim, then the silver threshold and then the brown "transition" piece. I will get a pic later on to show ya. Within that brown peice, is where the screws are that secure the door to the floor.

This is the gap.....I can't upload a pic from a phone...sorry.

If you are talking about the two doors in the bathroom, they are raised up to allow for tile to be put down, or any other type of flooring that I may do. That is just what my builder always does, is place the doors high enough to allow for carpet or tile, so that you do not have to take the door back off and shave it.

Here are some pics of the entry door, which is a fire rated door, the room that has the HVAC and tankless hotwater heater also has this type of door on it in order to be in compliance with code:

Hope that answers your question.

We are slowly but surely getting there to having a C.O.O.

The painters were out today to touch up all the walls and stripe all the access panels, and light switches.

The glass guys installed the shower doors and my contractor put on some knobs on the cabinets, and hung the hand rail for the stairs going to the storage area.

I also got my air compressor out of the truck with the help of a great family friend with forks on the front of his farm tractor and wrestled it into the closet. Let me tell you, rocking over 700lbs across the floor 5 ft and into that closet was NOT a easy task by anymeans by myself, but after about 30 mins of wrestling this "bear" I got it in.

On with the pics:

First the Paint:

SANY1265.jpg

SANY1269.jpg

SANY1260.jpg

SANY1262.jpg

Hand rail installed:

SANY1271.jpg

Now on to the air compressor:

SANY1250.jpg

SANY1251.jpg

SANY1253.jpg

Almost there, just a little further:

SANY1257.jpg

After 30 mins of wrestling, it is finally in place:

SANY1258.jpg

SANY1259.jpg

I hope to pick up my Frig. tomorrow and get it installed and this weekend, I hope to get the RaceDeck installed on the floor. Then it will be on to building work benches and shelves though out the garage so I can start to move my stuff in.

Thanks for checking it out.

Sweet looking compressor. I must have missed it but what size is it? I like the way they split the color on the switches. Very nice.

KYGTP,

Sorry, but I have to ask: Do you have an exterior vent in your compressor room? That compressor is going to draw a lot of air and it has to come from somewhere. If it's vented inside the structure, you will still get a lot of noise in the shop.

Remember, it will also need quite a bit of air for cooling the compressor head itself. I would turn it 90* from the position it is in in the last picture (so the motor is closest to the door), or you will not draw enough air with the fan over the cooling fins and burn it out is no time. It looks like it's way too close to the wall.

Ideally, you should have a vent to the outside directly in front of the grill for cooling.

Another thing you can do to quiet down the compressor is to mount it threw hockey pucks when you bolt it to the floor. If you use sleeve anchors just drill the appropriate size holes threw the center of some hockey pucks and use them as spacers between the compressor and the floor. It makes a big difference. My brothers shop has the same size compressor and it really quiets it down.

Good point! I was oind to ask if it needs to be mounted on wood, for noise and vibration. I would say the hockey pucks would to that much better!

Lane, you have some great points that I am just now having to deal with. I Did not have a vent installed to the outside, but what I do plan on doing, is putting a exhaust fan in the top of the room, with the intake for the air on the far back side of the room and using the ceiling cavity as a "passage" to draw the air through, which should help with the noise. So, the fan will be about 2 ft from the intake, so the air is traveling through that cavity, which will be lined with insulation.

There is a pretty large gap between the floor and the bottom of the door to allow air to draw in, so I think I will be fine there.

I know the compressor looks like it is right up against the back wall, but it is accually about 1.5ft from the wall, so there is plenty of room for air to be drawn over the head. It is a little hard to tell in the pictures.

I will just have to see how often it ends up cycling when I do use it and if that room gets pretty warm, then I will modify the room to make it all work.

I plan on setting it on some thick peices of hard rubber that we have here at my shop that we set our 35 ton and 45 ton presses on. That will help keep the vibration down and some more of the noise doown as well.

I'm new here. Been following this thread since the digging.
It's good to follow a project that is a little over the top like this one. Wow.

I have a question tho. Why didn't you unload the compressor with your fancy new lift?

Also something to think about from an old man who has had kids:
Studies are starting to find what I suspected all along that TV, especially cartoons, if watched more than a half hour a day can cause attention problems.

Watch a cartoon yourself once, it is a constant flick, flick, flick from one thing to the next, usually less than 3 seconds between and seldom more than 10 seconds.

Well, thanks for following along since the begining.

I have a question tho. Why didn't you unload the compressor with your fancy new lift?

The height of the truck and the height of the compressor was too high to be able to use it.

I could not agree more. If any knows this, it is my wife and I. My son, who is 6 now, is a special needs child, and we do not expose him to much tv, if he does watch anything, most of the time it is some type of educational video that we have on hand. When he was very young, 1.5 to 2 ys old and up, it got to the point that we did not watch hardly any TV in the house, we just focused on teaching and working with him on how to play. I could go on, but I want to stay on topic.

Thank you for the advice though, and like I said before, I could not agree more, and I can not even watch cartons these days.

This past Friday, my contractor finished up some loose ends and for the most part he and his crew are finished. We just now need to get all the inspections done.

I started laying down the Race Deck last light and finished that up tonight. 740 tiles and having to cut around the lift was one heck of a challenge, but I got through it.

I also got my frig installed and set in its place. I also moved in some chairs and such. It is finally starting to feel like my place, but I still have a ton of work still to do.

I will get some pics up of the Race Deck installed some time Sunday.
