Pics, please?

If i could only finish my house to that standard, i'd be happy as larry. Let alone my garage.

Thanks.

Please I need my daily fix!!!!!

What a great design and looks like a great contractor.

Ok, Ok, sorry to keep you guys waiting, here are the pics of the floor and couple other misc pics. Sorry that the floor is so dirty, but I still have alot of construction dust on my floor that seems to be one of the hardest things to get cleaned up. I even sprayed out the garage about 2 weeks ago, and still dust. Oh well, its a garage and I am sure it will get worst than what it is now.

For the most part, the floor was very easy to put down, with the exception of cutting around the lift post, that took up most of my time. In total, I propbably have about 8 hrs or so into it.

On with the pics:

First looking from the outside from each of the bays:

SANY1273.jpg

SANY1274.jpg

Now from the inside with the doors closed:

SANY1275.jpg

SANY1276.jpg

SANY1277.jpg

I stood on the scaffold to try and get it all in one pic.

SANY1278.jpg

SANY1279.jpg

Now, the reason it took me SO long to put the floor down, is all the cuts that I had to do around the lift post, I am sure glad I knew about the putty knife trick because I ended up having to pull up tiles a whole lot to get it all right:

SANY1286.jpg

SANY1288.jpg

SANY1284.jpg

And the support post:

SANY1289.jpg

I had some tiles left over, so I made a little pattern at the entry side of the garage:

SANY1280.jpg

Couple of other pics of some stuff that I have done, the frig and the couch:

SANY1281.jpg

SANY1283.jpg

Well, there you. I think the floor turned out great and looks nice. I think that maybe some day I will do the back half of the garage, but for now, I am just going to leave it. I am going to get some more edge peices to finish around the post and the side by the entry door to give it all the finished look.

Thanks again for taking a look.

What? No red stripe and Gray paint on the bottom half of the fridge. Just kidding.
The place looks great.
Now it is time for a pic with your car on the lift....

Mmmm, it looks great. You're going to love your new shop I am sure! When is your planned move in date? What all is left?

Protip: Throw a few small black zipties on those projector wires, it makes them look a lot cleaner.

Yeah, I think I will leave the frig alone since it is brand new. If it was a used old frig, I probably would have.

I am going to start moving stuff in next week. They just have a couple of small things to wrap up and some paint touch ups. I also need to get my final inspection done and the electric inspection done and all of that should be done by Tuesday.

I want to get some benches built and shelves built before I start filling it up. I figure it will help to have the rm when building everything. I am going to try and pick up a couple of the HF boxes and put them together on some type of frame and use that as a island to work off of.

The projector wires will get wrapped up, I am going to buy some wire loom to put the wires in, the loom that I had on hand at the time was not big enough, so that is on my list to pick at the hardware store next time I go.

I am taking off of work starting on Tuesday to start building and moving. I know my wife can't wait for me to get my car out of the house garage so she can get her van back in. She even said she would help me move stuff over there if it would make things go faster.

I hope that by next Sunday, I will have most of it finished, I will have to see though.

Nice job on the floor -- that looks like some seriously fussy work to get it all to come out that neat. Well done.

I especially like that your son got the first parking space. :)

Great as usual, KY.

When you get all done with next weekend's work can you give us another day count? I'm thinking it will less than 90 days which might just be a new world's indoor record...

Also, is that a drain in the middle of the center section of tiles? Or just a diff type of tile?

That looks exceptional. Congratulations. I think you should take your trimming skills and make 2 edge pieces to fill in the gaps at the edge of the Racedeck around the support pole.

Thanks, and yeah, my son was out there with me all day riding on all his toys and pedal bike like it was a race track.

The count as of this past Friday, was 75 working days.

I have three drains in the garage, and I put in a couple of their free flow tiles in, in those areas.

You have it all thought out, excellent. And great job getting the wife to help, that's always a plus.

We will have to see if it REALLY happens when the time comes to start the move.

That is what I am going to do, I just ran out of end piece. I am going to call this week and order the rest of the end pieces that I need to finish out all the edges and such.

Beautiful!

Nice! Floor looks excellent.

Thanks guys!!

Can you take a closeup of one of those free flow tiles, I was looking for them in the pictures but didn't see them?

In the pics, you can see that in the middle of each pattern, there are 3 tiles in a row that look different, those are the free flow. I will get some pics tonight when I get home and post them up for you though.

You may have covered this, but for such a high end garage build why no polished concrete or high-end epoxy coating?

I like racedeck for what it is, but at the end of the day it looks cheap (I know it's not as I have some!) vs. a nice epoxy job.

I went back and forth between the two and decided on the RaceDeck. At my last work, they had a very high end epoxy and as soon as you drug something across the floor, you now had a nice big scratch. With the RaceDeck, when one gets damaged enough to replace, you can replace with no problems.

But for the most part, I liked the idea of having the floor match the rest of the garage and it "looks" nice, at least IMO.

Garage has turned out awesome. Nice and bright. I bet you are super excited to move in and start putting it to use. Do you have an idea on how your going to do the workbench yet? I have those harbor freight boxes and they are awesome for the money. I used them for my workbench base. Keep up the great work. Thanks for all the photos, I sure have enjoyed watching this garage go up.

Yes I am pretty excited to start moving my stuff in.

Today I got My C.O.O. from the building inspector, who just happens to be a good friend of mine, so that was nice to get.

I think I am going to do two work benches against the wall, so that my welding cart and plasma cutter will sit flat against the wall. I was also thinking of doing a "L" shape bench to kinda seperate the sitting area from the work area, but I don't know just yet.

I have some pics of the lumber that I got today and of how I got the HF tool box out of the truck, that I will get posted up tomorrow, I have run out of time tonight.

Great Job!

5 pages, WOW, you were behind. With the way this build went, it would not take a person very long to fall behind on all the progress. I am glad we are wrapping things up. I hope to start moving things over this week and weekend, but will have to see how things go.

It feels like this project just got started not too long ago, and now it is done, along with ALL of my money, DONE!!!!!!!!!! Well not really, it is just in another form, and is sitting in my side yard:rolleyes:

Back to saving money again. You know, you can't take it with you, so might as well enjoy life the best that you can while you are here, within reason of course...............

It might be a little late to do this now that the flooring is down, but I ended up using clear silicone caulk around the perimeter of my hoist column bases including the small cuts or slots in the base plate. The reason was to hopefully stop any water from getting under the base plates and getting into the anchors, causing rust over time. Just something to think about.

KYGTP - I've' been following this build since the beginning, and it's very impressive. I do have a question about the mounting of your air hose reels. Do you remember what you used for support to mount them to? I can't tell from the pics if it's 3/4" plywood or something thicker. I just bought the same reel and am trying to figure out what I want to use. My joists (2"x6") are on 24" centers, so I think I may need something more substantial than 3/4" plywood. Thanks in advance, and again, very impressive build.

Thanks for following along all this time.

I ended up hanging the hose reels from left over 1 3/4 thick laminated beam that was left over from construction. You could always glue and screw a couple peices of plywood together to give a little more strength. I would not just use 3/4 plywood by itself.

KYGTP - thanks for the quick reply on the hose reel mounting. After looking at it some more, I've got easy access to the top of the joists. So, I think I'll run a couple of 2X4's across the top of the joists and then run 1/2" threaded rod down through the 2x4's and drywall (and a piece of plywood attached to the bottom of the joists) to the hose reel. The plywood will just be more of an alignment piece, since the 2x4's on the top will support the weight. Thanks again, and congrats on the awesome garage.

Well, I ended up getting my HF box the other day and the used the lift to help get it out of the truck, which worked out pretty nice.

SANY1294.jpg

SANY1293.jpg

The other day, I also picked up most of my lumber to build my shelves and work benches.

SANY1292.jpg

Here is what I have so far. I got all the shelves built next to the compressor rm, and most of the benches build too. I just need to get the shelves built underneith the benches to hold a couple of Craftman top boxes and other misc. things. Most of all of my current rolling cabinets will be put under one of the benches and the new HF Box will hold most of all my tools that I will need when working on my car and such. I am also going to put a Craftsman Top box on the HF box, just to add more rolling storage.

Well, here is where I am at now, and still have a bunch of work to do still, but at least it is a start.

The new shelves:

SANY1295.jpg

The New HF/Craftman set up:

SANY1299.jpg

New start to some work benches. Starting at the wall, that one is 12 ft long and then a spot for my welder and then another 12ft section, and the "L" section that sticks out is also 12ft long. Now on the end, I plan on used that as a Little bar with a half shelf under it.

Anyways, here is what I have so far, let me know what you think:

SANY1300.jpg

SANY1298.jpg

SANY1297.jpg

SANY1296.jpg

At least the nice thing, is that I screwed it all together, so if I want to change it, I just unscrew it all.

I worked on and off the past couple days on it and today I had to walk away after make too many mistakes, I am NOT a builder, so it takes me a little more brain power to figure things out AND I have a hard time figuring out how I want things to be. I got a long road ahead of me getting settled in and building the stuf the way I want it to be.

Once I get more finished, I wll post of some more pics. Any Suggestions will be great!!

Hi, i have been following your thread for a very long time.I gotta say that u have done outstanding job in planning your build from the very start. thanks a lot for sharing every step of your build with us!!

Now, onto benches...not sure what kinda work you are planning to do in the garage but judging by some of the tools, etc i would also suggest to make your benches 3 feet deep or more. Also depending on what kinda work you do...it might be good idea to leave room for a "tear down" bench.basically its a metallic bench with a drain in the middle that you use to tear apart engine, trans, etc.(pretty sure you know what iam talking about).

I'd have gone wider with the sticky out shelf/bar, maybe 3ft wide?

Are the ones along the wall 30in wide?

Well, all the benches are 2ft wide, just to be able to get the most out of the sheets of plywood. BUT, I think that I may change up the "L" part and make it 3ft wide to give a little extra room.

I think I am going to go out and stare at it for a while and try to come up with something. I am too much of a perfectionist, and when it comes to this stuff, it takes me forever to get it done. OH well, its not like I have a dead line. Just that when I start on something I want to finish it right away and not let it sit.

Well, Off the garage to think.............................

In my opinion, benches that are less than about 30-32" deep are ineffective. You have plenty of space for that in your garage, no need to crowd yourself. I'd also consider adding shelves to the bottom of the benches. That's a great resource of otherwise, wasted space. I made my lower shelves 16" deep to allow getting stools up close to the bench when working on smaller stuff. With the top at 30" or 32", and the bottom shelf at 16" or
18", no material will be wasted. And adding the bottom shelf makes the bench much more solid. I could send you a pic of mine if you'd like?

You've got an awesome shop, everything flows very nice. As detail-oriented as you are, I'm really surprised you didn't get all matching boxes. You could possibly sell off the mis-matched units to pay for another HF box.

Another suggestion that's fairly inexpensive... add some 16 gauge sheetmetal to the bench tops (ar at least 6-10') and have it bent down the face. This makes it a lot easier for the many projects that require a harder/more durable surface than plywood.

Looking good, keep the pics coming!

KYGTP,

32" wide is achievable if you cut your plywood down in 2 pieces, 1 - 32" wide and 1 - 16" (all 96" long). Double up by placing the 32" piece down first, then 2 16" pieces on top to make a 32" wide, double thickness (1 1/2" if using 3/4" plywood) top. this makes them much more sturdy!

You can always add laminate or Stainless Steel on top to cover the plywood later for finishing.

Mine is actually 3 layers of 3/4" plywood covered with stainless formed with a backsplash. The lower layer is 2" narrower than the top 2 layers for the bend of the countertop to cover the front edge and give me some clearance for the doors/drawers.

This is an older pic as there is now an aluminum checkerplate toe-kick installed across the bottom which finishes everything off nicely.

KYGTP,
Thanks for taking the time to share your build with us. Working and and having a substantial build like this is enough going on for most people let alone documenting it for us. Truly an amazing space which you and your family will enjoy for years. You set the bar high, thanks for sharing. Enjoy it.

Well, I plan on putting up cabinets all along the back wall over the bench that is attached to the "L" and I would feel like having the bench over 30 inches wide will make it pretty hard for ME to get into the cabinets. Most standard counter tops are only 25" deep.

I am adding shelves to the bottom of all the benches, just have not gotten there yet.

Yeah I know, I was think of doing that same thing, at least they are all red, with the execption of the Kennedy box, but I have plans for it.;)

I have had pretty good luck with the plywood, but I am going to look into some sheetmetal, I think it will help dress up the wood work benches.

Lane, that is a GREAT looking setup, that is what I want to do down the road, but right now, I am just keeping it simple and cheap.

damn. you have given us somthing to dream of.... wish I had more than a 2 car attached.

Thanks!

Not a problem. Yeah, pretty much my day would be, get up go to work, come home, talk with the contractor, go back out and take all the pics of the day, come in, play a little with my son, eat, help clean up, play a little more, give my son his bath and get him ready for bed, read him stories and put in bed, sit in my chair, up load all the pics to photo bucket and the rest is what you all have seen.

It looks like you've been busy. Nice progress.

Very busy, at least for me.
