Finally Building My Detached Garage, Build Thread

I was always planning on epoxy for mine, but I'm having second thoughts due to the reports of damage from welding and from jacks and axle stands. I hope to do a lot of work out there, and I don't want to be paranoid about the floor. I'm actually considering just putting down a decent quality floor paint, and then being prepared to re-do it every few years.
Awesome garage - you have done a fantastic job.
The compressor rm is nice and I have not had it running a whole lot, but from the little bit that it has run, Ihave not noticed any heat build up yet. It is quiet enough that it does not drive you crazy when it it kicks on while you are working, but when you open the door, there is a big differece though.
Rolling stuff over the RaceDeck is pretty easy. My largest box, which is the HF box and a craftmans top box total full has no problems rolling over the floor.
The Subaru is a friend of mine that is staying with us right now, so it is not mine, but it is a very fun car though

Awesome garage - you have done a fantastic job.
If I was you, I would just wait until you can get what you want. Paint is going to scratch really easy, WAY more so than Epoxy.

I got some more pics of some stuff I have done that I need to get posted when I can find the time. I am hosting a big Super Bowl party in the new garage, the first big party for the new space. So I have been a little busy finishing up some little things.

I've been a bit busy with the new baby who arrived on New Years Eve but I'm back now.

I have been looking at GJ for years as a guest,I had to join today to tell you that you cost me a good nights sleep with your 35page build! All i can say is WOW!!! I have a couple suggestions, if you remove your compressor's air filter and run pvc outside with the filter on the end of it, you will be amazed how much quieter it is. My buddy can now talk on the phone inside his body shop when the comp is running and its not in a seperate room! The only thing i saw that i didnt like is the incandesant drop light! I have an uncle that not only burned his shed down but burnt himself pretty bad. I also have a friend that lost his house and attached garage full of goodies. both of them had fuel spray on thier droplights. I threw all of mine away and got led's. I am not the type to blame a product when something happens, I know its common sence to keep a hot light away from fuel, but if its not in the building it cant start a fire!!! As an added bonus you will never burn your arm when you bump it on your led lite! sorry so long but i really dont know why there still making those lights! Keep filling that building up,its not like your gonna hurt the foundation! lol

I did got more things done in the garage and getting settled in some what. I got a entertainment center from Ikea that looks like a tool box, you know, to go with everything else.
I also ended up finding some bar stools at my local Big lots for cheap, and they are built pretty good considering..........They worked out well for the superbowl party that we had.
I got around to hangs some signs in the bathroom and in the garage, the little bit that I had. I also got the "Walk" / "Don't Walk" light up too.
Here are two shots of my car in action at the track that a freind of mine got for me:
Even though I had all the surround sound speakers hooked up for the sitting area, I still had the other 6 speakers in the garage to hook up. I just had those wires sticking out of the wall and I needed to figure out a way to clean it up.
So, I went to hardware store and picked up a 4 gang box cover to use as my mount and then headed to Radio Shack to pick up speaker terminals to mount to the gang plate. That way I could hook all the wires up to the terminals in the wall and then run short wires to my receiver. So this is what I came up with:
I took one of these
And Turned it into this:
Now to sort out all the wires and get them hooked up:
You can see in the background of the above pic with my notes as to what is what and how I was going to hook it all up.
Here it is all finished up and installed on the wall:
Once it was all hooked up, I wire loomed the wires together leading to the receiver for a cleaner look:
After working on a couple of small projects on my work bench, I realized that It would be nice to have some task lighting, so I installed 6 puck lights under the cabinets to help with that. I pulled power from one of the plugs, ran that to a switch with the oulet outlet on the top of the cabinets for a nice clean install.
That is what I have been up to over the past couple of weeks in my free time, doing a little at time, as I get the time.
I must say, I have LOVED using my new space, my wife and I find ourselves out there hang out more and more, almost like a second living room.

Well, as of now, I only have one toy, and that is my 98 Grand Prix GTP that I have modded pretty heavly. I bought the car new in 98' with only 200 miles on it and was my daily driver up until about 5 yrs ago, what is when it turned into my project car. I race 1/4 mile for fun and have with the car for over 10 yrs, it has just gotten a little more modded over the past 5, with larger cam, heads, PP intake, Eaton Gen V SC, smaller pulley, eletric water pump, oversized SFI balancer, larger IC, Roller Rockers, Headers, Custom build FWD trans with a Torsen Diff and a bunch of other goodies.
The best that I have been able to get so far is only a 11.70, but not bad I think for a FWD car that still weighs in at 3200#. If you look at my post above, you can see the framed pic of my car doing a burnout in the burnout box. Its fun and it is different than what is out there at the track.
BUT, some day, I would LOVE to own a Porsche 911, I have LOVED those cars since I was a kid...............In time I hope to get one someday.
Well, the upstairs has all the rough in everywhere for all the plumbing and such for a apartment some day, and the ceiling height is only 8.5'. Due to Zoning, the garage could not be any taller than my house and I wanted the garage to have 11ft ceilings, so that brought down the height of the upstairs ceiling. It is also a little over half the size of the garage.
Plus, I wanted my wife and son to be able to hang out in the garage with me if I am working something. With the sitting area down in the garage they can play X Box, watch tv or what ever while I pittle around and still be with me.
This past sunday I had a bunch of people over for the superbowl in the garage and it was very nice to have all that space to hang out and watch the game on the 110" screen. The first real party for the new garage and now everyone that was there is now coming over to watch the Daytona 500 in a couple of weeks. Looks like I am going to have alot of get-togethers now, which makes me happy to share the space with my friends and family!! That is what it is all about, IMO
So to make it a simple answer for ya, the space.
Well not much really, just added a couple of misc things on the cabinets and such. Finally went though all of my stuff that I threw in boxes from the house garage and got all of that orginized.
But so far I have had a Super Bowl party and people of for the Daytona, all of which was a blast to be able to use the space for parties and work on my car.
During the Daytona, a couple of friends of mine and I put the motor back into my Grand Prix and got everything installed and wired up and by the end of the race we were priming the motor. Pretty darn cool.
I will post up some pics here soon of some of the little stuff I have done.
I hope in the spring to have all of my contractors over for a little get together so they all can see what came of their hard work!!

Well, it has been a couple years, and WOW how time flys by. My garage has been one of the BEST investments I have EVER done. Working on cars with friends in a climate controlled environment has been so wonderful. Not only that, but when my cousins come to visit, two of their sons stay out in the garage, sleep, play xbox, shower, eat, they love it.
Over the past couple years, both my wife and I have gotten into doing HDPEs with our cars. So having the garage with the lift has made prepping the car for the track so easy, changing brake pads, bleeding brakes, changing oil, and changing wheels, ect....
So on to your request for updated pics of the outside of the garage:

The inside is a little cluttered at the moment, which I don't really like, but we are getting ready to do a motor swap in the Grand Prix and get it out of there.

Very cool, thanks for the updates! I have a lot of respect for the Supercharged 3800 engine in those GPs... I had one and it was super reliable.
Yes they are. I have beat the chap out of that car. I used to drag race it and we had a blast with it. The best I could get out of the car was 11.49, and that was with a built motor and trans. Since doing the HPDEs, I have not kinda lost interest going in a straight line for 11 secs at a time. Being on a road course for 30 mins, now that is a blast!!
My Friend and I have built a GP with a turbo, and we were able to get it to a 10.48 in the 1/4 mile. We hope to get it into the high 9s by the end of this season.
Thanks for the comments though on the garage, it has been a blast!!

It looks awesome. The garage, retaining wall, big driveway, etc defiantly one of my favorite shop builds on garage journal. I would say the greatest practical car guy shop builds I have seen.

Yes, we track the GTR and the STI. I starting tracking the STI when I got it new, I think it had 1800 miles the first time it saw a road course. Then when I moved up, my wife came with me a rode with me and feel in love with riding. Then we wanted a fun weekend car, so we got the GTR.
Next thing I know, my wife is in the GTR on the track and having a blast. So now we take both cars, she drives the GTR and I drive the STI. I do take the GTR out in my run group though to just enjoy the amazing power it has, but I am just glad she enjoys it as much as I do.

The GTR is a beast on the track and we have a blast with it. We bought it to drive on the weekends for dinner and beat the eyes out of it on the track. Just driving it the way it was build to be driven. Seeing over 140 mph down the front straight, and hammer on the brakes in 250 ft to take turn one is one heck of a rush

Yes, I have a lot of SPL parts, most all the suspension parts on our GTR are SPL. Front upper control arms, Rear control arms and later arms. They have held up great, considering all the abuse we are putting them through at the track.
Thanks. The reason I can park my trailer there, is that we have NO HOA.
I am off a private drive that both myself and brother share, so we are not in a subdivision. Pretty much can do what ever, with in reason, since we are still in the city, but on the very edge of the city.When we built our house, that was one thing we did not want was a HOA. We lucked into this property, and it has been great.

Your build is a good lesson for those who are thinking of building a garage in that, you need to put all the things you want into you dream garage and then downsize on what your budget can afford.

So I am thinking, is there anything you could share with us that you might have done differently, added now that you could have when the build started...any regrets on what you didn't do that you should have thought about???
