John, that's an amazing looking house, both inside and outside. The blue shower is OK but the multi-color one is not compatible with my double-vision. I'd have to shower or bathe with with both eyes closed.

You and me both, Bob. Wait, …. not at the same time.

Well, if anyone is still following this thread, it's reaching the end. We closed on a house in Tallahassee, Florida today and plan to be relocated in the next couple of months. I have sold most of my shop machinery and sorting out what I'll be taking and what else will be for sale. Sold my 1997 Chevy cube van since I don't plan to be doing the whole general contractor thing anymore. Not sure what I'll be doing yet. But that still leaves me with a big truckload of tools, materials, benches, shelving and stuff to move into a 25'x25' metal building on the new property. The house has a 2-car attached garage, so not sure where the other 3 vehicles will go. Looks like I'll be doing some long-distance trips.

The backstory is that my neighbor offered to buy our 10 acre property to start his hard cider business. My 40'x90' shop will be converted into his cidery and he'll have about 7 more acres of apple orchard (in addition to his existing 2 acres).

So, that's the end of my Whidbey Island woodshop. New adventures and new friends ahead.

Congratulations John! Ignore today's temperature -- it's not normal. It has been in the 50s the last couple of nights down here in South Florida but it will be getting to the mid-70s the rest of the week, with lows in the mid-60s. Cold for us but way too hot for lots of folks up north.

Toolfool,
Congratulations on your new adventure and move. You can sell all your machinery but you will always have the talent you have shown us all in your shop thread and in your contributions to the forum. We all look forward to updates as you head diagonally across the country.

Thanks Bob. Cold and wet is the combination wreaking havoc on my body.

ToolFool, I wish you safe travels and the best of luck in your new adventure. Wow that is quite the move! I don't know if it's possible to move any farther away, was it something we said up here in the PNW to make you move? :lol_hitti
Seriously though, I hope you really enjoy Tallahassee and get to meet some of those FL GJ members. Take care and don't forget to drop in to the PNW thread every so often even though it's almost dead.

John and Jay, the Florida Panhandle will solve most of your 'cold' problem but you won't believe how much 'wet' is waiting for you. Average annual rainfall:

  • Whitbey Island - 20 inches
  • Seattle - 37.5 inches
  • Tallahassee - 61 inches
On the bright side, Florida's 'dry' season is in the winter. Even when we got 10.25 inches in one week last month, it was in the low 70s. And you read that right, half [or a quarter) of the rain you get in a year fell on us in a week. The rain does provide extra privacy -- cars driving by in the street 40 feet from my window can't see my house in a typical Florida thunderstorm.

Bob, yikes! That's a lot in a short time! Is the ground able to handle all that or is there flooding during that? Also don't forget your other moisture....humidity :bounce:

Jay, Florida was a swamp that people started draining in 1565. It's a work in progress so we get local flooding in neighborhoods that have drainage problems but the ground is mostly sand and coral so the floods usually disappear quickly. This humidity thing you speak of -- it rarely goes over 100%.

Bob, I drove my car to Tallahassee from Feb 27th to March 3rd. That Sunday evening of the 3rd, I drove IN THAT STORM from Mobile all the way to Tallahassee. Emergency notices were constantly cutting into the radio broadcast advising to get off the roads, get under cover. I kept driving. Next day I told Shorty that might have been a sign that I shouldn't be moving to Tallahassee. Shorty said, " Aw, that was just the welcoming committee."

John, I hope you noticed some of the drivers slowed down to the speed limit when the rain was at its worst. We call the others defenseless drivers. Had you stopped at a gas station you would have heard some local complaining about the humidity. RainX is your friend down here.

In all seriousness, the rain in Florida is different. We get thunderstorms that dump huge amounts of rain in a very short time. In New York we got light drizzly rain that lasted for two weeks at a time, with barely enough rain to keep the grass alive.

We're now Floridians ( I guess ) ( and according to Driftpin, I'm all sorts of other things...). Just wanted to post a few pics of the 'shop' space I have now. It's a 25x25 steel building I affectionately call "The Oven". I haven't been able to get much organizing accomplished yet, the building just gets TOO HOT.
Wife and I spend a little time each day (in between her bar review time) sorting through some of the boxes in the garage. Did I mention that we have a LOT of stuff ?
Anyway, I want to thank everyone who followed this thread over the years. Sorry I wasn't better at documenting projects along the way. Maybe I'll start a new thread for this new chapter of our lives.

Now wait a minute. What in the heck is that stuff doing in my woodworking shop annex?

Too hot?:bounce: You posted that in June when temps were in low 90's. I'm looking forward to 98 degrees tomorrow.
