More siding going up.

Had to clear more trees out for REC (power company) to trench and lay new line to building/ new meter. Didn't want to loose more trees, but have to have power.

Have garage doors (10x18) going in tomorrow and "S"-10 beam (for chain hoist) going in today.
Should finish siding later this week also.
Will have pictures tomorrow to show progress.

I need suggestions/comments on insulating the attic / roof.
The attic will be used for storage.
My plan is to first install the Insulation Baffles, then follow it up with Faced Insulation Batting. No problem here.
The question is : where the roof ridge vent ends, and the roof line continues, how do I do that part of the roof, that does not have the ridge vent?

The Header over the door was designed to support the load.
This area was beefed up on the sides and top to support the chain hoist beam.
The wall support / header above the window did not get any additional support for something like this.

great idea with the I-beam for chain hoist over the door area.

How long is the I-Beam? what will be the rating? 1/2 tonne?

Thanks for the updates....love this building!

thanks, Checked out your restoration of the light, nice job! I think that style of light around my doors would make my garage. :rocker:

Are you referring to the green gas station light I mounted over my old drill press? Yeah - its a classic and adds a nice touch to my garage.

Got home today and the garage doors were installed. The installers placed the windows half way down, I had ordered them to be on the top. After a call, they will be returning tomorrow to correct the issue and complete the installation. The tracks went up perfectly around the hoist beam. Can't wait to share pictures to
Tomorrow.

That beam is great! All custom or was it a kit of some kind?

The contractor just took my chain hoist over to the steel beam guy, and it measured out to be a S-10, and then we measured the length and I told them what I wanted to lift, and they did the calculation and boom, there it was! :rocker:

It's nice when things fall into place. Now, I just need to get the doors up and working like I ordered.

This is my official "You ****" post.

You ****!!

Looks great. I'm green with envy. I only have 7'10" ceilings and not nearly enough room.

Looking for your guys thoughts on this space under the stairs?

1. Do I remove the center 2x4 and put a door on this and make a small closet
2. Put shelves in there coming from the garage side and shop side ( that's the smaller room farther away.
3. Or something I haven't even thought of?

Any ideas? [emoji362]

build a compressor closet or dog house depending on your needs.
storage closet for work clothes, or shelves for filters and supplies.

Thanks for the suggestions,

I had not considered a place to place the air compressor. Sounds like a great idea.

What about displacing the heat, would a closed up space like that cause other issues?

This may sound silly, but I was thinking that if you put the compressor under the stairs, with a thermostatically controlled exhaust fan out the side wall next to it, then it would keep cool. I'm thinking a fan like is used in attics to keep it cooler. Of course you'd need an air inlet to the space also.

That should work. I have an outside wall just to the left of that space. It would be real simple to cut a hole in the wall and install a exhaust fan with the attic type controls. Perfect fix. Why didn't I think of that? :headscrat

The contractor finished up the gables and should finish the last bit of siding today.

The electrical company assures us they would be out today to set the meter and trench and lay the line.

This is like the third time I have heard that, and it's getting old.

The next phase will be to finish attic floor, install shop door, complete bathroom, trench and connect to septic tank and trench and connect water.

After that, then it becomes mine to start my phases of work!!

Can hardly wait to get inside.

I have always liked your garage door placements - going to be a great workplace. Congratulations!

I had initially wanted a drive through, but then the budget didn't allow the length so I made it a little deeper and then with this placement of the side door, it allows me to slide the longer objects (the boat) into that area and still have the use of the front part of the garage for the truck/car/trailers/mower/and other stuff.

That also give you flow through ventilation, great for our hot, humid Virginia summers!

Mike, This is an excellent build!

I'm about an hour from you in Western Culpeper County.

I'm in design phase of my own custom garage, 26x40'. Also using Attic Trusses for storage up top as well as potential to turn the attic into a game room/office in future.

I had a couple questions for you if you don't mind.

1. Did the framing contractor do the truss install? I'm planning to do most of the framing myself, except I need to hire out a contractor with a crane to help me set my 26' span attic trusses. Any idea who can set trusses in the area?

2. Where did you get your garage doors? I'm planning on a single 18x9' insulated commercial grade door. Would like to buy from someone who can deliver and install in one shot. Any ideas?

3. Did they use aggregate (like #57 stone) under your slab or just that stone dust I saw them bedding your plumbing in? I'm debating whether it actually is necessary in our area, we never really have frozen soil more than the top inch or 2. I think the concrete would be better placed on crushed stone for stability if frost heave is not a concern in our area.

4. What size header did you use over your garage door openings? My header is not really carrying any load since it's parallel to my attic trusses but I was thinking of going double 2x12 lumber with 3/4" OSB sandwiched between. Worried about sag but I was told that my sheathing going up to the attic trusses should prevent problems.

Thanks! I can't wait to get to this stage so I can take my time finishing out the interior and running wiring for my custom LED light placements!

Hey Jayhem,
1. I can tell you the contractor did all the work you seen so far. Many local guys have cranes to set trusses, (including me).
2. Doors - Overhead door, I will get you specific information shortly.
3. Stone dust is what we used.
4. Hugh headers, I will get you more information shortly.
Thanks for the note.
Good Luck on yours.

Now have the lights installed. Initially found at Lowe's, then found same thing at Costco at almost 1/2 the price.
