Finding the new Droobarn

So back in 2012 I built the first Droobarn -- a 12'x20' shed/shop/barn to make my hobby/passion for old British cars functional.

At the time I built what I could afford and what I figured I needed. I was only going to have one car, and I was not going to do restoration work. Just maintain one car and one motorcycle. Simple enough.

Fast forward to 2016. I now have 2 cars ('59 Bugeye Sprite, '66 Morris Minor), one of which is a full 100% bare metal restoration project. Funny how things change. This means that I'm back to parking my Jeep outside, scraping the windows at 6 am when it's cold and miserable.

My wife and I have been recreationally looking for a new house on and off for the last few years, and last fall we got serious. Had a perfect place lined up (with a 1400sq' shop) that fell through. We've fought through the frustrations and are still on the hunt.

My needs are either an existing shop or plenty of room to build one. I talked to a local pole barn builder and have a good idea what my dream shop (36'x40') would cost. I'd be okay going smaller if other aspects were perfect. There should probably be a house as well, but I'm not all that fussed. :D

We're both not interested in that much compromise -- since we can stay where we are, though we'd have to do major renovations and I'd likely need to tear down the existing Droobarn and replace it, but could only do about 20'x24'. So we'll be spending the spring and summer hunting for our new spot.

So if you build another grambel roof, make the upper and lower halves of the roof deck the same size.

The old Droobarn has some odd proportions, mostly because it has a full attic up there. It's not a design I would do again.

If I wind up building something, it'll likely be as simple a shape as possible for cost reasons. Architectural interest is nice, but I'm currently far more interested in square footage. :)

We looked at a place today, wasn't bad but wasn't really all that exciting. Had a 3-car garage on the house and a small (18'x22') shop in the back yard. Too many compromises, so we decided to pass.

Surprisingly enough, finding a smaller house on a large lot (or with a shop) is not particularly easy. :)

Things are suddenly moving a bit faster in our hunt for a new shop -- with attached house as the wife is not that excited to live in my shop. :D

We found a lot in a neighborhood we really like, and got it under contract. .7 acres in an area that is setup as horse property. We don't do horses (though they're fun to have around) but it does mean that all the lots are reasonably big and almost every house has a nice big barn/shop out back. We're still figuring out if the dollars are going to work out, but we're getting excited.

Given building costs, the shop may have to wait a few years but there would be plenty of space for my ideal size (36x40). We should know pricing on the house build in a few days -- if it lines up with our budget, we'll pull the trigger.

We did wind up moving and building a new house. Updates to come when I get a moment. House is on .7 acres with plenty of room for a larger shop -- those plans are currently going through approvals. Plan is for 36' x 40' if all goes well.
