Good job. Glad the weather cooperated this weekend for you.
No, absolutely not! I had to use LOTS of old random plastic political signs duck taped together as a "tent" over the blocks while it poured just a few hours after the pour. We had to go slow as ameture DIY project, we'd mix just enough to fill a couple blocks at a time, plus I have a lifting restriction, can't use an entire 50lb bag at once. I'm just glad it didn't freeze, I was getting hot water from the kitchen to help keep the concrete and mortar at least 65F.🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Sorry I'm used to Reddit where every update is a new post, if it's not a new post nobody knows about the update or looks at it. I have less than 50 replies and posts total, not sure what is proper etiquette.🤔🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Stopped using Facebook few years ago, never used Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc. I only use Reddit for certain subreddits, not looking to read nonsense about everything, and I only watch the YouTube videos I want not the stupid Shorts that are reposts from Instagram or TikTok.

It's actually almost 3 years since that first concert extension was poured. Wasn't sure if stuff that old would be locked to prevent spam and bots causing post revival and havoc on the site, Reddit usually locks everything after 6-12 months to prevent spam bots posting malicious links.🍻

You can add using old political signs in the repurposing thread. All kinds of hints and ideas.

I agree to asking the mods to combine all the threads about this garage building and the story behind it. Post your request in the Q&A section with a link to all of them.

This appears to be your original thread.

If I merge all three threads, that I see with a quick glance, it'll be easier for you to update, keep track of and for others to follow along.

Once done, you should be able to edit the title to something rather simple than to keep making new threads. If you can't edit it, shoot me a PM and I can help you out.

I'm busy right now but give me a chance to get it sorted out this evening.

It's not a big deal, just part of the learning process. The three threads you had in the Garage Gallery Section are merged, just simple clicks with the mouse and it's done. Easy as pie.

Now, if you want to rename the thread, you should (might be) able to do so. I believe after a certain time period, members can't edit their titles or some just have problems doing so. If you can't and need help, just let me or Cobbler know since he's already chimed in on your thread.

I have many videos to edit of the construction, had a few medical appointments and procedures slowing me down. But I should have more time to update everyone when the weather forces me hibernate for the winter. Structure is up, many videos to make, and pictures to post.

But my old destroyed utilities are now back safely inside the building!

We got 2 sides of the vinyl siding finished, and I got my (per) holiday lights up before the cold and snow begins. That's the bulk of the siding, and the easy flat sides without any doors or windows. Got my wife parking inside. There's room for 4 cars, but I've got my scaffolding, miter saw, table saw, boxes of siding, leftover bundles of shingles the roofers didn't use, and a large pile of hand tools and power tools I don't want to keep bringing inside every night, I have 16 security cameras watching the property. I should just bring in a tool chest, but I figure tools on the concrete are harder to see from the street and less likely to walk off, while a nice chest says "take me."

I need to reorganize the pile of siding better before the delivery of doors, electrical, exterior finish trim gets delivered (along with a new $3,000 patio slider for the house). Then I can enclosure the garage and lock up everything and anything I want. Finish those doors & siding and the building permit will be PASSED.😬Backyard N East_0_live_1732557834351.jpg

You can always install the blue tarp doors. Though it may keep your wife from parking inside.

I’d still be wary of leaving any kind of tools unsecured in there now.
I don't really have a great options for my stuff, either it's in a 10x16 (tent) canvas "Shed" behind my new garage (construction site) that zips fully closed, but that is very low security zipper and canvas. During teardown and construction I had no other option, some of the new tool replacements from the content insurance are stored across town in a storage unit (with some drunk homeless guys living in their unit, and 200+lb hookers with more bugs than teeth! They literally have a dozen bedbugs & roach larva in their hair, with a few diseases that start with capital H.🤢🤮 )
But recently I have the option to keep some stuff inside my new garage with real walls, floor & roof, but no doors (yet). I have my big snowblower already up in the garage. But everything is on 24/7 security cameras as you can see.

Picsart_24-12-04_03-23-33-354.jpg

Today the 16x8 & 9x7 R20 doors were delivered! Along with the 36in side entrance door, the Nat-Gas 50,000BTU furnace, and 1TON AC Unit. I'm hiding those along with ($1K in copper) Romex spools behind some dirty cardboard and a sawhorse. I just need to get these doors installed and my stuff will be safe.

Inside New Garage_0_playback_1733298853051.jpg

I will eventually finish the siding; then the building inspector will pass the permit and be out of my life! I would be done in a couple weeks if it wasn't snowing and I could do siding, but it's too cold and brittle. The last day we did siding, my son was running back and forth to the house, microwaving a wet towel. I'd set the hot towel on the siding where I was going to cut, after ~2 cuts he'd go back inside and get that towel back up to ~150°F. But now it's snowing, and the rest of the siding is cuts around the all the doors and up the front & back gable ends with cuts. I'll have to wait for another odd 50°F day in December or January to do siding again.

But I'm also waiting on my High Lift brackets, to get these doors 11ft in the air. USPS might have lost the package, they've been at the same City Distribution Center for 5 days; "Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way. It is currently in transit to the next facility."🫤

high-lift.jpg

I also have $2,300 in Menards rebates I'm waiting on, that was my plan to finish the interior. Insulation, vapor barrier, corrugated steel "wainscoting" up 32in, then I'll Router 5/4 to cap the corrugated steel and a slot for the 4x8 Peg Board around the top, finally a full length large shelf on each side that is 2ft deep 2ft tall from the ceiling for storage and totes.

Screenshot_20241017-003213.png

Then finish the ceiling and Link the Nat-Gas furnace and wall AC together for a single typical HVAC wall mount thermostat (I don't want to download a stupid Chinese app to control my Air Conditioner 🙄 ). It's really easy with a 24v->120v Relays can make any AC unit dumb again and let a typical thermostat control it with the Nat-Gas furnace.

Friday started badly, (according to them) the forklift driver as well as the delivery driver dropped off 2x4x8s. But they didn't check the plans or "notice" the 2bys were only 8 feet long, and spent half the day making my garage with 8ft walls. I get a knock on the door and they proceed to tell me this story and ask if I would accept a garage 2 feet shorter than I paid for and the plans called for? "Nope!"

With the 8in block on the pad/footers with the sill plates and top plates I'll have just over 11 foot interior wall height.

Picsart_24-12-07_22-57-51-953.jpg
They spent the rest of the day tearing apart those walls (for Jack studs, cripples, etc), Monday a new delivery of lumber arrived and they built the correct walls. Unfortunately I didn't lock that days security footage (from being rewritten over) to make another video. Hopefully that is the only time I make that mistake with the footage, sorry. But I still have many images of that days work:

Picsart_24-12-07_23-02-14-907.jpg

Before you suggest what I should have done, anything taller than what I currently have would require 2x6 lumber, more blocking and a much larger cost. I'm already doing my own siding and doors because I can't afford this. And I'm already at maximum allowed square footage in my jurisdiction, I'm allowed a 15ft carport on the back in the future if I want, but enclosed HVAC controlled space is always better.

They "Fixed" my floor drain, but with as little effort as possible. I purchased a Gray drain cap before they returned, they brought a Green & Black drain cap exactly as I already purchased. But 80% of the flange lip was destroyed. So they cut off the bottom of the Green drain at a 45°, then set my Gray drain on top to try keeping it level with the surface. I hated it.

Picsart_24-12-10_21-43-45-949.jpg

Later I got a 4½ diamond wheel and fixed the broken floor drain myself! Something's are never correct unless it's done ourselves, the curse of knowing enough to be dangerous at everything, but no expert or mastery of a trade.

First I marked out 45° lines and cut drain groves into the slab back to the drain with the cut off wheel. Not sure they'll help much, my slab is not perfectly square or level. I might have to polish the concrete some day for better drainage.😒🤔😂 (I'll need to borrow somebody's "Round Toit", or never)😎🤣

PXL_20241209_225557332~2.jpg

I really need to fill it with water to mathematically find out how much surge water it can hold before it needs to seep into the rocks, (or knowing my garage was built lazy long ago) just reabsorbs into the soil packed around the pipe.

My cheap 8 gallon (oil less) rebuild air compressor is dying, I think it just needs a new valve between the tank and compressor head, but we'll see.🫤 This was only meant to get me past rebuild, until I'm moved back in. But I have still have the 2 main roll up doors to install (waiting on parts). Then 40% of the siding to complete (in the snow) before the building inspector will pass ALL my building permits.

Screenshot_20241210-215918.png

This runs for ~2-5 seconds, struggle & stop, then it bleeds off air. I suspect it's pressurizing the tube to the tank, but the check valve is broken and not letting pressurized air into the tank. I have an $8 replacement coming from Am-I-Zoned, hopefully it's the correct size, I knew it wasn't big enough to be 1/2 by 3/4, this cheap tank is more likely 3/8 by 10mm. I was very suspicious when I seen how many 3/8 by M10 check valves were available for purchase, likely just for these cheap oil less compressors before they overheat, tears up the solitary ring, and die. If I can fix it, and finish my new compressor enclosure, then his will be good for my Dad.👍

PXL_20241208_231011287~2.jpg

I have my big 60 gallon oiled compressor to (finish building and) install when the City leaves me alone! The 60 gallon tank (only) will go up into the rafters stripped down to just a tank, whilst I have (mostly) built a compressor box, which is similar to an outdoor Central AC Condenser (next to millions of homes). That loud BERRRRRRRR! will be outside of my shop/garage, and the tank will be hidden upstairs taking up no floor space. Wow🤩 Plumbing it will be an engineering exercise to keep condensate moisture controlled properly, not easy to build most of this in my charcoal garage without power or lights. But I got the mock up testing done inside and old window AC unit with the guts torn out.

Picsart_24-12-11_01-41-33-101.jpg

I'm not sure on the rules here, will my custom air compressor enclosure need a separate thread with the Tools, or do I have to keep posting here? All I have left before the City leaves me alone is:
  • 6 pieces of garage door air stop left to install.
  • Then 40% of the siding left to install way up at the gable end peaks. The front should be easy with scaffolding and concrete driveway: but the backside will be mud & snow 😳☠️ )

*I read you report.

Let me see if I can clarify something for you. First of all, you didn't get in trouble. It was a recommendation to merge all your build threads into one thread and keep it going as an on going rebuild/refurb/remodel. It makes it easier for you to update one thread and will help you keep track of things as you go.

Secondly, it helps other members follow along in your "build process." Nobody want to try to skip around to follow something. . . kind of like those movies that jump around and make it hard to follow.

Once you have the build done, most of us continue to update our thread here in the Gallery Section with our on going projects or what we're doing in the shop.

If you're building a compressor box in or on the back of the garage, I would suggest to post that project here in this thread. If you have an issue with your compressor, like a fitting blew off or belt broke and needs replacing, causing you to ask where to get parts or such, start a thread in the General Tools section. Some guys/girls will document the repair of the compressor, taking and posting pictures in their Garage Gallery thread.

If you need help, feel free to ask for it.

I'm having the worst luck with Doors!
I want to talk about the garage, but I'm so disheartened and depressed about my patio door. Along with the garage (planning & financials) I also ordered a (very nice) rear patio sliding door for my house, we've had every other window replaced recently with an upgraded 1/4in Laminated security glass windows (double 1/4in laminated glass panes, standard windows use 1/8 annealed glass, standard patio doors use 1/8 tempered glass because they are low enough for a child to fall through and get cut). This was a very expensive patio door (they should have had shipping insurance on it). They called me in (odd because the last call for the garage doors was to schedule delivery). But they did call me back in once for this door; apparently Ohio manufacturing plant doesn't use 1/4 laminated security glass, had to sign a useless form the Pennsylvania manufacturing plant was going to build the door.🤔😐 As the customer, I don't care about manufacturing plants!🙄🤦🏻‍♂️ I knew there was something wrong with another call 2 months after I ordered and paid for this.😓 They immediately ask me if I'd "be okay with a discount if I could still use it?"😳 My heart sunk, even a $1,000 wouldn't be enough of a "Discount" to figure out how to plasti-weld or use a Body-Shop adhesive to repair it, NO! Good thing it's December and I'm not going to cut out the 1980s door immediately for the new door, BUT I'd like it safe in my garage for the spring time. The bottom frame corner was completely cracked open, I refused to accept it and they immediately ordered a replacement. Hopefully they package it better. All my other windows came with 2in tall shipping corners for protection before the box for smaller windows or crates for the larger windows. This was a giant crate for a fork lift, the patio door weighs 350lbs with the extra glass weight and heavy duty frame. But no storms or burglars will ever get inside!👍😀😴

PXL_20241213_200554029~2.jpg
Video of the factory Hurricane testing with a 2x4 going 50 feet per second out of an air cannon.

Video of 2 criminals trying to break into a laminated hurricane security glass window, and failing after 4+ long minute struggle even using a firearm.

Sadly this broken beauty will get sent to a discount store, and somebody who knows glass will try to use it. Video of 2 criminals trying to break into a laminated hurricane security glass window, and failing after 4+ long minute struggle even using a firearm.OR more likely this will sit for months as each interested individual finds out it weighs 350lbs and requires special truck delivery (not in the back of a 1500 GMC); eventually some idiot landlord will purchase this for a rental. It will never close correctly and always have drafts and rain leaks from that corner!😒🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

Now my garage (doors)...
I ordered my doors and extra parts in early October. My custom R20 thick doors were delivered Tuesday after Thanksgiving, but I still don't have the tracks, brackets and cables to finish installing them. I have a standard 9x7 rear convince door installed in the opening. But as seen in the picture I'm ~3ft short on; track, extra brackets, and longer cables, etc. Nobody wants a standard door that opens and wastes 5+ feet of the garage ceiling height! It took a week for the parts to get from Houston to Indianapolis, now it's stuck in Detroit. I am so close, yet 3ft away from having a working rear garage door.

Picsart_24-12-13_17-27-18-064.jpg

Plus when I finish the rear convince door, I'll have enough practice and knowledge to install the main 16x8 Front Door without many hold ups or waiting. I've purchased extra bolts and hardware, I've marked level lines and taken measurements, I've attached a section of 2x12 above the garage door opening on one side of the door for the tension spring mount, cable drum and the opener that mounts on the front wall.

Supposedly a few days of 45°F weather this weekend, might have to switch back to doing siding if it's not too cold and cracks. Especially without the garage door parts🫤; I can do garage doors at any temperature with the proper cold weather gear. All my trim is completed, finished the door jams with weatherproof White PVC trim, 1x6 PVC boards, and the PVC brick molding with that built in J-Channel. With the corners installed, and metal siding starter install 360 around the building, I can install siding whenever the weather is warm enough. Siding has a minimum temperature.
Siding + Doors = Passed Building Permit!👍
(Then I can do more multitasking with insulation, electrical, HVAC, and maybe the generator)

I will never, ever again special order anything from Home Depot or Lowe's. The last straw was my month's long escapade with the garage door on my house in GA. Damaged once, wrong parts twice and a month's wait in between each time. From that day forward If I can't take it out of the store with me, I find it somewhere else. Fortunately, now that I've moved to SC, I have Yoder's near me and they are absolutely amazing!

I've made some good progress with the vinyl siding in December considering it likes to crack in colder weather. I can probably finish the front this week with the warmer weather (depending on rain (since the front has a firm concrete base). However the rear will require the 6in adjustable leveling pads I purchased to replace the casters. I'm not sure if they're going to work in the snowy mud; with the necessary stability confidence my novice vinyl sliding skills require to feel safe up in the air.🤔🤷🏻‍♂️👍

After 4+ months of shipping delays I have all the required parts for my rear convenience 9x7 garage door that now works as designed.
Picsart_24-12-27_04-57-52-920.jpg

Still waiting on the "correct torsion springs" for the primary 16x8 door. The original garage door seller (Menards) was almost yelling at / belittling me for "ordering the wrong doors and not communicating with them what I wanted/needed!" 😒🤬 These 2 older guys behind the contractor desk and myself just looked at each other in this surreal moment that felt awkwardly long, I was trying to calm down so I don't take out my frustration anger on the wrong employees. Apparently only these 2 employees knew what a High Lift door was, and informed me I could have gotten ALL of the correct necessary parts with the garage door box instead of all the standard garage door parts I didn't use. But only if the correct employee with the knowledge to contact the garage manufacturer sends an email telling them what (me) the customer wants. I've been planning this build for years, all the previous employees would give me blank stares, or just print off the website information I had already read. Once I asked how high is the deadbolt centerline, they just printed a page off and didn't understand my question about; "that is just a standard door, I need the height for a prehung door, what is the additional height the doors sill plate adds?" Another default printed page and blank stare, I ended up going out into the lumber yard and cutting open a retail boxed door with my own tape measure 40¼ was the measurement I needed.😒😬

I was adding reinforced steel into the wall for the deadbolt during construction. I want to keep my tools and vehicles safe from any smash & grab burglary attempt. Very important to have an accurate measurement when adding 1/4 steel into the studs before the walls are closed up and doors added!
PXL_20241115_141545540~2.jpg

I asked how many horizontal reinforcement struts are included with each garage door I was ordering? Another default printed page and blank stare, I ended up ordering 4 additional 16ft struts, the 9x7 door only came with 1 horizontal reinforcement strut. But when I opened the 16x8 door that kit included 4 (it has 5 panels), and I had to returned the rest, and made another comment asking when the General Manager works? The door kits included plastic Rollers, I asked for heavy duty metal rollers, another blank stare and they showed me the garage door parts isle and I ordered them separately (which I didn't have to apparently).

All this gave me the impression this was all they were capable of, so I ordered my High Lift Kit parts from a quality garage door website and made the changes myself. Preferred Doors in Texas has a full catalog of garage door parts on their website and a helpful customer service. But nobody will give Torsion Spring recommendations on the phone or email because of the liability. When I returned to Menards asking for larger springs is when the 2 older guys were belittling me for ordering the wrong doors/kit/parts. I showed them pictures of my door progress after that surreal moment calming down. They agreed I had the correct Brackets, Cables, Drums, Bumpers, etc. That's when those 2 employees informed me I could have gotten all the correct: Horizontal Supports, Drums, Cables, Spring(s), Brackets, Rollers, Track Bumpers, etc included in my door kits, and not had to wait additional months for these extra orders and spend $700 on parts I already had (the standard incorrect versions of). They also have told the General Manager I'll be looking for him one day.🤬

First I want these doors to work correctly, then the General Manager and I will talk about the $8,000 order I made, the broken patio door, and $700 of the incorrect parts I got with my garage doors after asking multi people about the options available and what parts were included, or just the height of a deadbolt center.🤦🏻‍♂️ I never had to order extra parts from their garage door isle (rollers, horizontal support struts, etc) or seek out an online garage door seller for all the; brackets, cables, and drums. Preferred Doors in Texas has a full catalog of garage door parts on their website and a helpful customer service.

I intentionally avoid Lowes at all costs, I think it's terrible service to leave all their grills, mowers, snow blowers, etc sitting outside on the rain with a giant bike lock cable. Menards sold me a brand new snow blower still in the crate, I had to fold up the handle bar section and a few other parts; and blow off the brand new cardboard dust. No risk of water damage or rust.

Generally Menards treats me great, they have the largest lumbar yard in my area. It's just this communication problem with the garage doors, the last ~15 years I haven't had a problem and been given the opportunity to purchase great open box floor display power tools saving hundreds!🤔🤷🏻‍♂️ This too will be fine in the end, with the big picture of the total cost of the garage $700 isn't enough to be that upset over, just frustrating they could have done it without my need to invest time hunting down extra parts and researching High Lift Kit videos and websites. C'est la vie!🍻

Yesterday was a good weather day, almost 50°F, I finished the siding on the front of the garage, but after sunset.👍 Knowing I'd wake up to a cold heavy rain all day. But I can rest knowing the front siding is completed, here is a rain soaked morning progress picture.
Picsart_24-12-29_09-33-11-727.jpg
(Center blocks are for the kids basketball hoop, left block is for the fire alarm Red Bell & Strobe, while the right block is just an unnecessary basic air vet for a symmetrical look. Symmetry is hard to obtain with the doors, but I can always remove that vent and splice in new siding if it's a bad aesthetic)🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

Next a couple days of clean up, as I didn't care where cut pieces of siding fell after 4pm as the Sun was about to set. Might start setting up interior cabinets along the wall. Still waiting for garage door tension springs before I install the 16x8 front door and it's stuck down without the ability to go up. Once they come in that should go faster than the rear 9x7 door I was piecing together the High Lift Kit. Now I have all those part and know where everything bolts together.

Time to remove the scaffolding casters for the large flat leveling plates. Probably make some 2x10 pads to extend the footprint, and use the giant 24x2 threaded leveling posts that are welded to the pads. Should be able to get another foot of height and the ability to adjust the legs to level it in the mud. Then I can finish the rear gable end of the siding when another good weather. That won't be &fun, but I NEED to get this finished so the City Building Inspectors are done with a Green Passed Inspection sticker and status in their database!

Back to a good weather day, tomorrow starts a 10+ day period below 20°F. I finished the basketball hoop for the kids.👍 (still need to fit the vent and fire alarm)
Picsart_24-12-30_17-32-52-757.jpg

Then I started to rebuild my work bench (without a middle post). I decided NOT to purchase a $500 side cabinet for my tool chest. This 6foot x 3foot x 18inch cabinet was a $120 on sale and twice the storage capacity for all my: different saws, 1/2in drills, routers, tool sets, impact guns, belt sander, case of hole saws, hydraulic crimper, etc all the tools that come in their own case, and need to be stored; (somewhere better than scattered around on the bench, the floor, in the basement, on the giant pallet rack, up on a random shelf, etc). This will keep all those larger (non battery) tools in a single location.
Picsart_24-12-30_17-30-42-694.jpg
The workbench top will be dual layers of 3/4 plywood, for a 1½ worktop, then 1/2 OSB will be good enough for that small 18in bottom shelf. I used joist hangers and Spax PowerLags to create the floating corner workbench. Thinking about what additional structural lumber or likely steel under the 1½ plywood will be ideal for a benchtop vise.🤔

Looking good! Just a question on vinyl siding, the cold, and basketball- will it be a problem for the siding if it gets hit by a shot that’s wide of the backboard when it’s cold out? Or maybe no one ever plays or takes shots when it’s that cold?

Workbench structure is done, just need to borrow my Dad's truck.
Picsart_24-12-31_17-34-50-543.jpg

I finished these cabinets next to the garage door where there is barely any space and stuff would just get left on the floor. 12 inches was almost too deep, but it fits.👍

Can't do too much until the Siding on the back gable end is finished and the City passes my Building Inspection. Then I can move back in, do electrical, HVAC, and start finishing the interior.🎉

🤷🏻‍♂️ It shouldn't be a problem, they don't usually play in the snow. But the prior garage that burned down had a similar basketball hoop for the last 30+ years and never had a problem with the siding.🍻
This should actually be better than the prior basketball hoop that was just drilled into the wall and bolted tight against the siding. The new one I installed took me a week, because it has siding blocks where the bolt go, with 1¼ wood behind butal tape that is against the sheathing and studs added behind the wall. This new basketball hoop sits out ~1in from the new siding. That should prevent it from smashing the siding with each attempted basket.🤔

Are you gonna have enough room for garage door tracks with as close as those cabinets are to the door opening? Lots of good progress!!

I was able to finally finish all the siding to the gable peak last month with my Father-in-Law, that task is completed and closer to a building inspection and PASS!
Garage Rebuild_Siding-rear.jpg

No my original plan before doors was a minor failure (it gets much worse later), I could get enough room to squeeze them behind the track, BUT then the door won't open. I moved them down flush with the trach and built a 2by4 & 2by6 blocking that fits between the front wall studs and the garage door track. I can paint it white, or cover that and both cabinets with a sheet of FRP to make it look like one assembly. but I'll likely just paint, then fill any large gaps with caulk to prevent nuts & washers falling down between the cabinets. behind will be a row of 4by8 sheets of peg board around the garage. the first 3ft will be 1/2 OSB painted Gun metal gray (tired of everything ending up white). But I do enjoy all the doors open, and I do enjoy where I placed my first receptacle/outlet/plug only 36in from the entrance, that as a good idea.(y)

⚠️The 16x8 (378lb) garage door fell on me⚠️

Mostly from my own stupidity working alone, but there was a part failure, and I could have been badly hurt. If you skipped to the end TLDR: I couldn't afford professionals to install my siding or doors, I'm installing them my self with friends & family. Insurance company didn't pay us enough to rebuild, budget cuts were required to get this project completed. I purchased full ready to install Door kits from Menards, standard steel 36in service entry door, 9x7 rear convivence door (for anyone with a trailer they want to park behind the garage is popular in our area), and this 16x8ft primary front garage door.

At least 2 different Menards sales team members (A*** & S***) back at the Professional Contractor desk acted stupid when I was there several times deciding the specifications for my doors. I ended up ordering their basic Doors and additional High Lift Kit parts (unrelated to this door failure) online from Preferred Doors in Texas. Later when I asked Menards about spring sizes for my (now) 2ft High Lift door, 2 different sales members at Professional Contractor desk (R*** & M***) were 75% upset and blamed me for ordering the wrong door, after their prior sales team members didn't ask any questions about my needs, High Lift, Springs, or offer to upgrade any parts. In fact when I asked for those upgrades; they walked me to their garage door isle and made me pay extra from steel rollers with bearings! They gave a very intentional feeling that was all they were capable (or willing) to sell me. Now (R*** & M***) are telling me they could have changed my door order to swap out the stock plastic rollers, larger springs, full length torsion spring shaft, along with EVERYTHING necessary included for.q custom 24in High Lift door for my needs, no additional parts ordering required.
😡.

My Dad helped get the 16x8 door and everything up into the opening, I got the tracks and rollers up, I was charged extra for a full 17ft torsion spring shaft, I did NOT want to use the 3 piece shaft they include with every basic door to sheet-metal screw into a singular long shaft (that too could have been included if the sales team did their job). Eventually I was sold larger 0.244"-1¾x55" springs with their "consumer safe" EZ-SET torsion winder plastic assembly. I found out the hard way these plastic worm gear devices are not safer than a regular Garage Door Torsion Spring for larger doors⚠️
(stock image of these EZ-SET winders being used with a cordless drill)
EZ-SET-winder.png

These plastic winders worked okay on my rear 168lb 9x7 smaller door, but the much larger Front 378lb door was too much for this "consumer friendly" system. I carefully added some tension on each side, the instructions stated; "take a 5 minute break after 5 turns." I went down to check what the door balance was with that number of torsion spring turns, the door was able to lift up ~4ft, but that's when the assembly broke and the door came down hard at a crooked angle. Now I'm stuck with a large crooked door that's wedged into the tracks. It bent the track and brackets, along with some rollers falling out (rollers hold the door into the track, and on the wall, missing rollers will be REALLY important real soon).
PXL_20250123_174529250~2.jpg

⚠️NEVER WORK ON LARGE EQUIPMENT ALONE⚠️
⚠️This was my fault, I decided to jack up the low side of the door without any help or safety buddy around, I was trying to jack up the low side of the door to release the force of the door wedged into the tracks (but I hadn't considered how many rollers fell out). When the door was jacked up enough to release the pressure, it kicked the jack out and fell down shut fast! The entire door then started to lean inward and hit the left side of my head, after hitting me the panels started to pivot and encase me like a metal burrito! . This is zoomed in footage from the Security Camera inside my Garage (my wife likes to check on me if I've been working for hours can see what I'm doing, and if I've found a way to kill myself with my own tools.
Inside New Garage_0_live_1737656950206~2.jpg

Unfortunately when I was knocked down, the top panel landed on my left ankle and I was pined to the floor. I skipped the unlock and scroll my contacts for help, I just pushed the Emergency button on my phone and my Emergency contacts were notified I was in trouble. (selfie I was able to take)
PXL_20250123_182653129~4.jpg

My Sister responded to the SOS with GPS pin, got my Dad rushed over to lift the 378lb door off my foot and back up in position, I quickly drove some Spax PowerLags to hold it until I recovered (foot, head, back & pride); the next day I spent 18 hours in bed, felt like a door landed on me.🤕 I took out all that "Safe Consumer Friendly" EZ-SET equipment to return (with many additional complaints). I ordered standard 0.273x2''x45'' Garage Door Torsion Springs and bearing anchor plates online. I'm done giving the local store any more money for door parts, Preferred Doors in Texas has been great to me and never given me bad advise or customer service!(y)

Last thought; not sure if I could have fixed the door problem (without it falling over) if I rolled my scaffolding next ot the door and locked all 4 casters?🤔🤷‍♂️

Glad your ankle wasn’t snapped in all that, the angle it caught you looked very bad. Hard to say what the scaffolding would have done, I think after examining the tilted door and twisted tracks I wouldn’t have trusted the tracks to hang on to the door tight. But I do see why you were hoping just leveling it out would free it up. I think the best approach would have been to disassemble/unstack the door panels from the top, tear out the bent rails, and start over with the better hardware, which it sounds like you are doing now anyway. Hope your panels didn’t get all bent up in the collapse. Good luck!

PASSED my Final Building Inspection!🎉
PXL_20250210_193411225~2.jpg

Got the Garage Door finished with the High Lift Kit installed. Using traditional Garage door bearing plates and 250x2x35 torsion springs.👍🎉 (I'm going to remove the EZ-SET system from my 9x7 door later this Spring and install traditional 207x2x30 torsion springs). I'm returning all the EZ-SET garbage to the store that never should have sold it to me!🙄🤬
PXL_20250206_195719822~2.jpg

Now I just have to do everything else: Electrical, Compressed Air, Heating, AC, Insulation, OSB & Pegboard, Shelving. It never ends, but I finally get to bust out all the equipment I've been accumulating over the last 4 years and squirreling it away in my shed/basement/tent/storage-unit, etc. Time to move back in and let the party begins!🍻

Snow...,🥶 they cancelled school until Monday! The wife and kids will all be home.., all day, for 120 hours straight.😕 And I'm left with (a newly legal) garage, with projects to be done, all the that potential family time, and.., I'll just be..., BUSY out there!😂 My son will have to use the snow blower, I've got work to do if she want's to use a garage door opener, or the furnace to melt snow off her car before next winter?

At least I'm a providing Father giving them WiFi but only until 8PM when that shuts off, I do have rules during school!🤔🤣 That (doesn't effect our adult WiFi, I even have my own WiFi Access Point in the garage!😁

Nightmare on my house!😥
The (first) replacement (second) $3,000 security patio door arrived at my local builders store from a Jeld-Wen East Coast manufacturing plant. They wanted to schedule the delivery, so I went in to inspect (again) every corner and nook on this large heavy door (1/4 tempered safety glass outside and 1/4 laminated security glass inside. This $3,000 door has a "Missle Level" Rating (a full 8ft 2x4 will bounce off this glass when shot out of an air cannon at 50MPH+. Makes it impossible for any opportunitistic criminal walking/driving by to randomly choose our house for a quick Smash & Grab when all of my windows are built to this level of defense strength.💪
Screenshot_20250220-213142~2.png

As you recall the first door was completely structurally damaged on the bottom corner, the heavy weight of the doors was not supported enough, for the rough transportation from the East Coast manufacturing plant to the Midwest. They tried to offer me a discount 😂, but this is unusable by anyone, except the worst slumlord rentals that don't care about leaks and water damage. But even then this is far heavier than the $500 door inside on the shelf, and I doubt they'll discount it 85% off.🤔🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm surprised they didn't submit an transportation insurance claim for a damaged $3,000 door.🤦🏻‍♂️
PXL_20241213_200554029~2.jpg

So I go in to inspect and everything looks good. They set it on a half pallet, then build a protective A-frame around it with "Fragile" notifications on each end. But the first door didn't have the right protection on the bottom of the door to prevent damage. So I'm looking at EVERYTHING!
PXL_20250219_150412186~2.jpg

They snapped on a piece of end cap trim that covers the fixed door when it's set permanently. But I swear it's 180 backwards, it's a Left, when I need a Right! I spend the next 2 hours debating with them the (second) door is WRONG!

  1. "I'm just not looking at it correctly", they cut off the bubble wrap from the handle on the Left...?
  2. "No I'm still wrong not looking at it correctly", but why is the nailing flange showing 4in on the Outside and 1in on the inside...? Wouldn't I need 1in for my brick molding and the 4in goes inside...?
  3. "No I'm still wrong this model door can reverse the panels". Okay I'm not leaving this Contractors Desk until I see documentation that is true and the instructions that is possible! (They never found that paperwork)
  4. "No I'm still wrong", but why is the screen door, then on the inside...? I've never seen a Patio Door with the screen door on the inside and that's not how I ordered this $3,000 door...?
  5. No, I'm still wrong that screen door is just loose packed in the crate, and some high end doors have an inside screen door. No, the screen door is in the track, and if mounted that way then the nailing flange will push this door out 4in, with the threshold on the wrong side. This door is a Left 180 from what I ordered a Right Patio Door!
  6. Maybe, but my initial order was over 90 days ago because of the damaged 1st door, and waiting on the second door. Their computer purges special orders after 90 days, and they have no documentation of this special order, all I have is a SKU number, no proof of what I actually ordered. I'm still wrong.
So; after 2 hours debating everyone at the Contractor Desk finally runs out of excuses and bad explanations. Everyone now agrees it's a Left, but because their computer "PURGED" my special order, despite it's not completed or delivered yet.🤔🤯 I spent the last week depressed waiting to learn how and who made this mistake? Was I going to be stuck with a custom $3,000 door we couldn't use ruining our family budget, or was it a manufacturing mistake. I'm not made of money or Walter White with a 2 year plan to build a garage and die with millions for the family. I don't get many comments or replies because this isn't a fancy expensive garage people like that to watch. I don't have $3,000 to burn on a mulligan!😳

After waiting a week depressed and no progress on the garage, I got a mystery email for another special order, but I hadn't been back or purchased anything. I waited another couple days until the hear General Manager was in the office and talked to him, they ordered a (second) replacement (third) custom $3,000 door and I didn't burn up our family budget, I was correct! 🎉

Garage building has resumed, I got the Genie 6172 Door Opener installed on the front shaft. There is button in the garage, a button in the house, my wife's vehicle "HomeLink" button is programmed, and the WiFi is set-up to link with my home automation. 👍

crikey, lucky you weren't seriously injured

The door falling? Yeah, that's why I'm saving the security camera footage until everything is resolved with the doors. I'm not seeking a lawsuit, but I don't want to be left with $750 in parts I never should have been sold! They should have never sold me that EZ-SET winder system with the door I was asking for, despite it was supposed to be safer than traditional torsion springs. The EZ-SET system is NOT rated for heavier doors like mine or any door with a High Lift Kit that rolls up to the ceiling; that mistake could have been deadly. I gladly purchased the correct bearing plates & torsion springs, and installed them without issue.👍
Fortunately after 25 years as a Firefighter Paramedic; I've done confined space training, dam water rescue training, vehicle extrication, ice fall-in rescue, etc. I have experience with structural failures, and learned how to move(fall) without trying to fight the physics of an object the human body cannot stop, while protecting my head and sensitive areas from injury. These type of structural failures do not care about our meat bag of bones bodies, do NOT get between forces that will take off a limb or kill you. Too many people die trying to grab or push; a heavy piece of equipment or something sharp; and it just takes them. Similar to an exposed PTO shaft, getting to close to a lathe, hydraulic presses, setting a chainsaw on leg before it stops, unclogging a snowblower auger, jack failures when under a vehicle, trying to push a falling tree, etc ⚠️☠️
Honestly I should have never been next to that door, those "EZ-SET" springs and winders were past their limit, I feel dumb.🤦🏻‍♂️

You going to armor those door jambs as well? I put longer screws in my hinges and latch, but it was kind of pointless since they could just break out my glass and reach inside to gain entry. If nothing else I figure it will slow them down a bit, or force a would-be intruder to make lots of noise.

Yes I have steel armor reinforced door jams with 3½in hardened screws into the King & Jack studs. I don't have any windows in or near my doors. While every window is 1/4 tempered glass outside pane and 1/4 laminated security glass inside pane. No cheap 1/8 annealed glass in my house.😎
PXL_20241115_162239838~2.jpg

I had to pre-drill the holes in the 1/4in Angle Iron. I replaced all of the door screws with these structural Grade-5 screws.👍
