My wife and I were not hurt and although the fire caught my house garage they were able to contain it there and we didn’t have to leave home at all. I‘ve been told the two vehicles that were not registered would not be covered but that info did not come from Insurance co. so I’m hopeful. The real challenge will be recovering my loss of all equipment and tools. I had two or three of everything with 50 years of accumulation.

Your homeowners will hopefully step in on them
Homeowners insurance won’t cover motor vehicles. They have to have auto insurance policies, even if destroyed or damaged in a structure fire.

Fortunately, at least in my case, newly acquired vehicles are automatically covered for, I think, thirty days before I have to get policies written on them.

Sorry for your loss. ***** BIG TIME! Try to look on the bright side of things - nobody was hurt and you get to rebuild (always fun) and maybe do things a little different this time. Keep us updated.

My heart feels for you and your wife. Glad you weren't hurt.
I hope we all think a little more critically about LiIon batteries and their underlying problem.

Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine!

Check to see if your insurance has a grace period for new purchases. Its been a while but I thought my insurance had a 30 day grace period of like coverage on any new to us vehicles. Maybe your insurance has something similar? Read your policy.

Sorry for your tragic loss! This is the nightmare of many here, for sure. With the prevalence of lithium batteries (and battery-powered cars) unfortunately we'll see more of this.
As others have said, usually auto policies have a 30-day period of coverage upon acquisition, so hopefully that applies under your existing policy. As for the tools, I can't imagine the loss there. Thankfully you and your spouse are OK as is the house.

Your tragic loss has touched me, i am truly sorry for you.

I have insurance to help me recover, but insurance does not cover the pain of a loss.

I'm sorry to see that. I hope all goes well with the recovery although I know not everything can be replaced.

This is one of my biggest worries myself. To the point that I now only charge my few cordless tools when I'm in the shop working then they come off the charger and the chargers are on a dedicated power supply which I can turn on/off with a single switch. I also don't weld in the shop within about an hour of closing up so I can keep an eye on things before closing up shop. Even taking precautions I worry about a fire.

Glad no one was hurt but it still ***** and I wish you all the best in the recovery and rebuild.

I hate to see those images, and I'm sorry that happened to you. You'll get through it. My wife and I lost our home and garage to a wildfire eight years ago. If you have questions about negotiating with the insurance carrier, the slow process of rebuilding and reequipping, etc., I might be able to help some. Feel free to shoot me a pm.

First of all..sorry to hear of this and glad to see that it was just material loss! That fire looked intense.

Lithium cells/tools and chargers do carry a fire risk vs having none. That said, EV fires (meaning full EV, not hybrids) carry just a small fraction of the fire risk of hybrids and ICE vehicles. It’s not even close. This means that overall, incidence of garage fires due to a vehicle should drop quite dramatically with EV adoption.

Wow that *****

"Although I do worry that my ability to acquire stuff is outpacing the contents coverage on my insurance. I bet I'm not the only one"

Same here, I have the coverage but to purchase the contents all over again would take years, that is the nightmare for me. There should be an add-on rider on insurance policies to supply a Concierge to research and buy all the stuff which needs replacement.

****, At my age if I had a burn out I would give up and raise flowers.

Terrible news, but glad your house was untouched. Hopefully the insurance will treat you right. Good luck!

Dad and his brother were terrified of something catching on fire. I think something may have happened long ago to cause that. Never did ask em.

OP, hope insurance comes though.

All the tools running off of batterys and being charged 24/7 Is garnering a lot of (watch - out) attention. Going to look a lot sharper at my insurance policy, just starting over with a not quite finished shop is concerning. Not to mention personal belongings, Natural gas, keep your head up. New shop in the future and shine stuff.

I am genuinely sorry this happened. I hope all works out. When I was finished with my new shop, I brought my insurance agent in to show him my shop. Then, I had him estimate the price to rebuild the entire thing, not just the shell. I did everything but the shell myself and due to some medical issues I’m currently having, I want a fully finished shop if something horrible happens. My renewal is coming up and I may have him back out again.
