I'm firing the Low Voltage Contractor.
Just not sure how much he walks away with

Typical Run is let's say $125 for a Cat6 drop

The electrician has pulled all the runs at $75 per drop - whether it's 10 feet or 100 feet.

The LV contactors was responsible for the latter *terminations, labeling, etc*.
We talking about 150 drops. All or 85% of which he has already toned out and labeled. And this was not even in the contract - as the original contract we had with him was for 28 drops. He decided to *move ahead* on his own accord and tone all the cables on the site.

What's a fair rate would you say for toning out each cable. Do I be a d1k and pay for 28 cables ----as there was much more cables on site that he has done on his own accord.

Not sure I follow completely. Your electrician is pulling all the cabling at $75 each? Then your LV guy comes in at $50 each to finish and label? Where can I sign up?

Yes, not - it's complicated....as the estimates, etc were all fubared on the get go.

The $125 is just a # that's a average # for any commercial work.
It should actually be cheaper than that since this a a pvc job and not plenum, etc......

Labor is regional for the same work done in Florida or in NYC.....

I've had drops that can be toned in a minute (new install). I had a pre-existing drop the other week that took me an hour to find. The drops that ran along side from the second floor picked up the tone signal, and the toner said it was in 3 different racks. I don't have a recommendation of a per line rate as it really depends on the job conditions. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Only thing I can really add at this point... is if you knew he completed the 28 lines and did not stop him from moving forward... then I say pay. Work not requested but suffered or permitted is still work time.

I just walked in to check status of *new build* just last and noticed a bunch (at least 85%) of the wiring was toned. Neither was requested by me nor was I aware it was/had happened

Brand new open walls....open studs. No fishing into *unknown* for all wire pulls

Why toning a new drop? Should have been labeled when pulling

+1 to that. A lazy contractor will pull cable without labeling and then waste time toning later. I label all my cables before pulling and then pull 'em and the rough in is done!

Why would ufire him? Did he do a bad job or someone else job?

I agree with others, label as you go. Is the label a Sharpie, or a custom printed shrink, which takes more time.

Who is going to terminate the cat 6? After proper termination, each run should be tested.

Legally you only pay what is defined within the four corners of the written contract. If there is a written contract, than any changes must also be written.

Morally if this person has done work in good faith, as opposed to charging for something that did not need to be done because they were already marked, than compensation is up to your conscience.

As lv contractor I would not have toned out those un-marked lines however I can see him seeing that it needed to be done in order to terminate and test them.

I would drop him $25 per just because they are going to be marked and termed in the end anyway.
