I was going to get a Honda generator but for the spec I wanted it was going to cost me. I picked up a Firman Generator model HO7551 Duel Fuel for $799.99 with decent spec. and I plan to power my HTP pro pulse mig with it on the 240v 50a socket on the generator. Anyone else on this forum own one of these ?

I'd sure be interested in how it works.

We have an all electric house, although we plan to put in propane. I have nightmares thinking about what would happen if we lost power in the winter.

Would like to get a whole-house standby generator, but 50 amps could at least keep the furnace blower running or maybe run the well pump in a pinch.

The generator should have plenty of power for the basic stuff. I will have a transfer switch installed.

50 amps will run 2 heat pumps. 5 amps would keep the furnace blower running or maybe the well pump (if it's a half hp). That said, this dude doesn't actually put out 50 amps. It just has a 50 amp plug.

What does an electric furnace typically draw?

You can go online and get the spec for your Furnace

Sorry that is correct and I should have been more detailed.

Keep in mind when you say "50 amps" - that generator has a 50 amp plug... but it's only rated for 31A@240v on gasoline, or 28A on LP. Both are fine to run a furnace and a common well pump. I have a similarly-sized backup generator and we have the fridge, chest freezer, well pump, sump pump, lighting (all LED in the house) and electronics on it without issue. I just switch the interlock breaker over and shut off the AC, stove and dryer breakers.

We've had a string of reliable power the last year or two, but normally we loose power a few times a year.

Good find on the generator dual fuel! For those that have a gas generator and want to have an option to run both, this is a good source for doing dual fuel http://www.uscarburetion.com/
I did this on my old coleman powermate, it worked like a champ when I ran out of gas during Hurricane Sandy and could not find a gas station that had power.

Good thing I read this first before getting it at Costco for $800. Wanted something that could power family business after storm with 5% THD and use for my Hobart 210 maybe once a month to avoid using the dryer plug.

Was hoping it was 50A to step up from 30A dryer plug.
