Sears has this viper box for originally 1000$ it's marked down to 760$ and I get half off my first box from going to college at UNOH
So I'd only be spending 360-400 total
Good deal on a first box?

Personally I don't think that is a very efficient drawer/pegboard layout for general mechanics type tools. I would either go grab a Harbor Freight 44" or check the used route for something in that price range.

can that 1/2 off credit be used anywhere on any box? If so there are probably some better options

I can't give an opinion on the box, but you are on the right track in buying your first box from anywhere but a truck (ie $$$$).

I bought this box on sale for $800 (bottom only). If you can get it at 50% for $500 I think it would be a great deal:

Plus it makes a great 6ft work surface.

Yeah either that or a HF roll cab. But if your credit will only work on that box it is a good deal at that price. Even if you decide to upgrade in the future you can probably make all your money back

I would choose a box with more drawers for mechanics work. It looks like a glorified single bay box with a lot of wasted space. I would have to agree with everyone else in getting the HF 44" box. It is a well made box at a great price. It is cheap and easy to expand as you get more tools and fill it up.

I started as a mechanic almost 14 years ago with a 40" wide craftsman top and bottom box. I quickly filled it up, so added a side box with more drawers. When that filled up and I was buying more diag tools with big plastic cases I got the side locker for the other side. Having a box you can cheaply expand on while not making a lot of money is important, that way you can get more quality tools. When you start making good money trade it in for a big box. I worked out of my craftsman box for 3 years before I got a deal on a 6 month old snap on krl 1003 box. With the trade in I paid cash for it and I don't think I will ever have to replace it again.

My 1/2 only works at sears...
And with the amount of tools I have right now this box will work since I have the main basics for everything from chainsaw to a freightliner
I also have a smaller craftsman roller with a Waterloo top box
This is really nice for my long pry bars and breaker bars along with the long ratchets and my 3/4 ratchet and sockets

Well your never done with tools

So Now after reading all the deals on here and then spending about 3 hours browsing tools I may need a bigger box next year
Smart move. Within the next year, the community here will literally help you select the best "anything" for your tool collection.

I've bought more ratchets, wrenches and pliers than I ever thought I would, but thanks to the crew here at GJ, every dollar I spent was on quality selections, not exclusively based on names or brands alone.

Damn shame you can only spend that credit at Sears. Options are unlimited outside that store.

Haha I don't know about that soon
But next year or two
I still have to fill up the other boxes first then I'll move to another bigger box
And I took a trip to harbor freight the other day and looked at their boxes an then went to lowes and looked at the kobalt boxes
I don't really care for snap on anything
I will only purchase their specialty tools like diagnostic equipment and such
I know they have a hydralic pressure tester that I know I want to get
Maybe an oscilloscope and a scanner

I found the box I've been wanting forever cheap as hell
I'd have the money if I wasn't paying on that other box
I'm depressed now

You're a GJ member. This won't last long.

do you self a favor and DO NOT look at the "show us your toolbox" thread or the "show us your new tool arrivals" thread. once you see other guy's boxes and their tools you'll see things you just have to have them and your eagle eyes will spot those threads every day and you'll be hooked

my name is mrjaw14 and I am a (tool) adict
