First Charcuterie board

Made my first charcuterie board for some dear friends for a housewarming gift. Not done yet, still need to fine sand, drill a hole in the handle, do a little straightening and oil it down to deliver this Sunday I hope. Have a little spot I need to fill in with some CA titebond.

Looks great! CA glue will work on that spot. You could also push white glue in there, and sand across it. Kinda of makes wood putty that always matches well.

I made a cutting board mistake once. We were on vacation and saw some cutting boards in a tourist gift shop. Me and my big mouth said "instead of paying $50, I can make you one!" $100 in materials later and a week of work, I made three different ones. Next time I'll just let her spend the $50.

BTW, I learned you need to dry the wood in an oven before you use it. Some of the strips shrank in the dry winter air cracking the board. Had to cut it apart and re-glue it.

it needs to be at least 2 inches thick, drill across and install all thread for torque rods with wooden dowel caps to seal ends.

I've seen walnut used for pallets. Clearly a better use than a decorative handmade gift.

I bought a load of all kinds of woods from a furniture builder at a bargain. I’m mainly practicing these, that is why I am giving them away to dear friends. They all know these are my first ones. I am telling them how to care for them as well.

You really won't like that mahogany is a common paint grade wood for exterior millwork.

Shakes are split with a mallet and froe.

Years ago a guy I know imported a bunch aircraft parts & I watched the pile of *scrap wood* get bigger by the day outside his hangar. Asked I could have some, he said "take all of it so I don't have to pay to take it to the dump"

I bought home 5 truck loads of teak, made about $5k selling some, gave some away, kept some.

I once had a small order of 16' galvanized flashing arrive strapped to a completely clear 2.5" thick x 12" wide x 16' long Spanish Cedar plank. Sold it to a cabinetmaker friend for 3X what the flashing cost.
