Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT First Ever Garage - 30x40 Build

It's official. Permit came yesterday, so I can comfortably start locking down dates and materials.

Need a space to fit vehicles, boat, and the wheeler over winter, and give me enough space to tinker and build.

Build will be 30x40x12'8 sitting on a slab on grade. Subbing out the slab, everything else will be DIY and with the help of a carpenter friend who's willing to do his day job on the weekends for the low price of beer and food.

Got the concrete guy coming out soon to take a look and finalize the quote and lock a date down.



One carport already down in the photo, next is to move the shed, tear down the other carport, and clear the land in behind.

Also just finished the 3 day extravaganza of burning the 1/2 cord of ****** rotten wood thats been stacked behind the shed since we moved in.

Some spare cordage and I dragged the shed across the yard today. Figured it was cheaper than rolling it on posts.

Ill have to get creative with the rope work when im tucking it in behind the finished garage.

Got the land cleared this week. Was a real treat solo in 30 degrees.

All in took down a little over a dozen trees small to medium large, and hauled out over a dozen truckload of brush.

Got the first 4 loads of pit run dropped today. Hopefully concrete goes in next week!

Progress.

Channel has been socked in with rain and fog the last bit so hasn't been much movement.

With the machine staged here now I'm hoping for a finished pad within the week. Once that's inspected and down itll be a weight off my shoulders.

Spoke with an inspector and I guess drains here for residential are pretty much green lit. So each bay will be getting a 12" basin. That will make winter melt much better.

Was a blistering day today. Only one guy came today but he put in the work. Got it all grubbed and down to bare, fabric down, and first lift of pit run.

Exciting to see the actual footprint down.

Water is from a last minute torrential downpour that hit right as he was finishing.

Been a busy week. Concrete crew has been around daily getting it all prepped up. Waiting on an inspector tomorrow and they said they're pouring right after.

I also decided on one 12x12" catch basin centered under each bay.

Lumber also showed up. So I pretty much have all the materials minus truss and lvls

Looks like a great project and 30x40 is a really practical size for a first garage. Sounds like you've got a solid plan in place already, and having a carpenter buddy on board makes a huge difference on a DIY build. Looking forward to seeing it once the slab is poured and the framing starts going up.

Forms got cleared out today, she's starting to look like a garage!

Got the sills down today and studs prepped. A few small blowouts on pour day resulted in the stem wall not being as straight as I wanted at all. And some of the bolts were set too low, and not set in all spots. So I'll need to slam some bolts through the double bottom plate once the walls are up.

Talked to the concrete guy and got the vibe that I got under quoted, however he stuck with the original quoted price. So I feel less upset about the mistakes.

The rental company also fucked me and send a man boom instead of a telehandler. Royally pissed about that and will result in a lot more manpower on our end but we'll make it work.

Fairly successful day. Stood up all the walls minus the last door section.

Gotta throw a few last minute studs in tomorrow and finish top plates and we can start sheathing.

Looking good. A month and a couple weeks ago it was just an area cleared out to build. Now it’s progressing into a real structure. The framing is probably my favorite part of construction.

She's up and sheathed! Behind schedule due to the screw around with telehandler rental. But we made good progress considering there was much more labor needed than planned
